I really liked Eli. WHY is that so many cool movies turn to shit in the last 20%? WHY.

I call it the Stephen King Conundrum...

Great story with a crap ending... this describes everything he has written for 20 years...

Ok, so I just finished the game.... and I gotta admit, parts of it were truly bloody heart breaking. But honestly.... it would have made a better movie, or Bug Budget miniseries, than it did a game. It tells a very compelling and well written story, that the player can interact with, but not effect in any way. ..l.

As I dont currently own a playstation, I thought I'd just get over the hype by watching play throughs on youtube. From what I've seen this sums it up perfectly.

I also tend to agree with Sardukhar re the open blah of Fallout 3. I supose at the end of day game makers must know this but for practical reasons go one way or the other. Still I cant wait to play the game that gets this balance right.

Heh. The Stephen King Conundrum. Quite right. Remember the start of the Dark Tower? So perfect. I never did finish the series. We got to the plate-hurling peasants vs the robots and..yeah.

I liked Insomnia a lot, though.

Also, with Peter Straub his Talisman is superb. Really one of my favourite books.

Fallout 3 got close to getting it right, for me, Pafetik. But when they failed, they failed in so many ways and managed to blah up everything else. New Vegas didn't...but I preferred the urban setting of Fallout 3. So, high hopes for the next iteration, I guess.

Issue is, Bethesda thinks they do a good job with stories and their sales back them up, so expect little change until they fail spectacularly. Skyrim is better, story wise, than FO3 or Oblivion. So perhaps they are learning? Or Obsidian is rubbing off on them.

That was an interesting video, vtmb. You should start a thread about it, because I want to have this discussion about Simulation vs Replay-ability vs Choice+ Consequences.

The thread was worth reading too, i'll check gamedevs before opening the thread

The more I play the game, the better the story gets, the more I like Ellie.... but the gameplay itself just becomes so glaringly lacking... you really have to be careful about which direction you take while doing your paltry exploring for the much needed goods, because if you choose the wrong door, suddenly you are fucked as the game just moves, and there is no way to go back unless you create manual save points, and I just don't care enough about this game to litter my hard drive with those.

This is a perfect representation of a game that sacrificed gameplay for story... And thats not something that should ever happen, because the sotry shouldn't effect gameplay at all really. I get that they want you to focus on their narrative, but at the end of the day I have been given no choices to effect any outcome, and the only choice I seem to have in anything is whether to kill people, or sneak by them. The game play is verging close to being abysmal.

This is kind of why i can' t play and tolerate some games at the same time, like TWD or Dear Esther and maybe TLOU. When the only reason i want to complete a game is to see what happens next story wise, that particular game failed to entertain me. Sadly that's what some sony exclusives (heavy rain, mgs,beyond..) are all about since they aim to be some pieces of art, but when it comes to playing the thing there's nothing there to impress me (like idk, puzzles?).

I have to admit though, dear esther isn't that bad since i'm one who has to figure out wtf is it all about. Still, digging on and on is time consuming.....

In other words, as a player, i don't like to go through piles of crap to get to the good parts.

Yeah.... if the best thing about the game is the cutscenes, no matter how well done they are, then the game kinda sucks... This game doesn't necessarily fail that bad, but comes close...

Overall, upon reflection, I did enjoy quite a few bits... but overall it seemed lacking as a game to me, I would have liked more game, less story, or maybe just more game.

most of the people say that the game is sooo awesome, but i am unsure.

i didnt play it yet .....the gameplay looks too much like Uncharted (same studio) , and i am not big fan of post apocalyptic, and the game world looks like every other post apolcalytic game or movie.....and is the girl which is with you usefull?

She is. She throws things at people, eventually shoots them. Occasionally, she jumps on enemies and stabs them. Very amusing.

Well, I like reading books, so I have to say: 10/10.

The story itself was not the best it could be ( I wish in the end we could have had the option to let that thing do its thing), but the story telling was impecable, the characters background and personality were impecable, I loved the dialogues and the difficulty was well leveled.

I would like to have had some choices, even if superfluous, just to motivate me to play again, but not every game has to be an open world, you know? I would get pretty bored of only playing skyrim with different themes.

Btw, anyone touched the Multiplayer? Is it any good? It looked very out of place to me, like something that is there just to please shareholders, so I didn't even open it.

Wait. If the stroy wasn't the best it could be and you gave it ten out of ten, what would you give the same game with the best story? 11?

btw, TLoU is becoming a good example why 10 out of 10 ranks are easy to criticize (dhu)

Technically I just wanted to have an alternative ending, I expressed myself badly, that part was just a personal opinion and not part of the argument for the "10/10".

Strange. My playthrough was almost exactly the same as the before instead of the after. The AI was never that dumb for me.

Hm.... I don't think I remember the last game I would give a 10/10... Maybe GTA3... because at the time, it was the best that could be done and it it defined the sandbox game. The original Driver was pretty high up there as well.... Before GTA blew it out of the water...

San Andreas came close, at the time the only thing about it that bugged me was how CJ let everyone treat him like a bitch... which really got old after a while. It's still probably the best game I have played, but it could have been better. And to me, that's what a 10/10 means, a game that, at the time, simply could not have been any better at all. It's also why Saints Row too, as close to perfect as it was, really would only get an 9/10 from me, because it was obvious that things could have been just a tad better... a bigger more diverse world, a better story (throwing the innocent and hot bartender you were flirting with into the line of fire so you could get behind the bar with some unnessecary flair during a cutscene bugged the crap out of me... so did the Jessica thing, and the sniper mission in DLC where you just gun down random people on the street who have never done anything to you).... Now SR2 and San Andreas did both get a 10/10 on gameplay itself... and if San Andreas had SR 2 customization, I doubt I would ever play anything else, ever...

That's really what I am hoping for with Cyberpunk.... San Andreas size world, that level of diversity. The customization across all levels of SR2, The loot and non-linear storytelling of Fallout New Vegas. The Melee of Sleeping Dogs. And a story as compelling as RDR, Sleeping Dogs, or Last Of Us.

I' m not used to give marks. My kind of "10/10 game", i mean my favourite one, would be a decent and evolved Gunz remake. Or a decent Matrix game.....still, they'd probably never get loads of 10/10 (thus breaking up expectations sooner or later)

Didn't find him hilarious, don't think he even actually played the game. It was more like he read the cliff's notes for the game and just went from there.

Other than the bit about how absolutely played out Zombies are, I don;t think I agreed with him about anything. The problems I had with the game were the crappy mechanics. I had zero problem with the story or characters. I thought the AI handled itself pretty well, and definitely felt Ellie was maybe the only "forced companion" in video game history who I didn;t want to murder constantly.

In short, that guy comes off as a twat who I guess I am supposed to take seriously because he's got a brit accent, but his review of the game in no way matches up with my experience.

He does have a great way of turning a phrase though, I just get the idea he would be happier playing legend of zelda or some other sissy ass game for girls.
