The Last Wish - favorite short story?

A poll for those who have read "The Last Wish" - which of the stories included in the book did you like the most and why?

Now this is a difficult one - I like all the stories, for different reasons. Each one has a different style, and my favourite depends as much on my current mood as on other things. I like the way an initially boring scene dissolves into total chaos in "A Question of Price". "The Witcher", of course, is a must just for the brilliant way it was captured in the game intro. "The Lesser Evil" is just tragic (and has a very original way of looking at fairy tales). I finally voted for "The Edge of the World", because Torque is such an interesting character, and because of Toruviel - it's interesting to see how much she changed between this story and the game. Ask me tomorrow, and I might pick "The Last Wish" instead...

My most favourites are Grain of Truth and Question of Price - the first one for its nice ("detective") point, the second one for the almost nostalgic feeling ("That's how it all begun...") after reading the other books.

I picked "The Lesser Evil" because of the tragic story and an interesting twist on a well-known fairy tale. I like unhappy endings.

Wow, that's a hard question. I liked "The Witcher," "A Grain of Truth" and "A Question of Price" the best. Which of the three? Hmm. I liked the way "The Witcher" showed us Geralt in action, and of course, I've mentioned my fondness for the opening movie elsewhere. I like mystery stories, so I liked that aspect of "Grain," and I'm also sappily sentimental enough to like true love conquering all. And I liked the way "Price" showed us how important destiny is in the witcher world and how Geralt knows himself to be a man of destiny. But my favorite moment, as opposed to my favorite story, was probably the part of "The Voice of Reason" where Geralt makes Tailles' sword hit its owner in the face, thus winning the duel without breaking the rule about touching Tailles with his sword. Brilliant! *fist pump*

It was "The Lesser Evil" for me. I loved the drama, the uncertainity at the end (was she a mutant or not?) and final scene, with Geralt leaving towards the horizon, like a lone cowboy, but scorned and rejected by the community for doing what he felt was morally right.

I picked "The Edge of the World" because of the pure hilarity of the first half (the description witchers in that ancient book (and Dandelion says something like "I think it fits perfectly", the absurd chase of that devil-like creature (when Geralt is glad nobody can see him like that :D) which is contrasted by the seriousness of the second half (the encounter with the elves and their philosophy).

I think Whisperwind was being ironic ;) I like the Edge of the World despite rather than because of Dandelion. His best part is when he's knocked out and therefore silent...

*laugh* Good one, Nimue! I quite agree. And I was surprised -- in the game, Dandelion is said to be a great poet, yet the song he sings at Shani's party seemed, er, considerably less than great.

I'd expect as much: he was totally drunk! On a more related note... my favorite short story was The Lesser Evil because I think a lot of things are like that. Plus, it was cool seeing Renfri say "You can't beat seven swordsmen" and then have Geralt do exactly that later on.

In the books Dandellion is also often described as a very talented poet. Unfortunately, there isn't much material to judge that - Sapkowski provides us with only one Dandellion's poem. You can listen to it here (from The Hexer):music only:http://www.wrzuta.pl/audio/6eHTh1P59f/soundtrach_wiedzmin_-_zapachnialo_jesieniamovie versionhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14hMpbIqCk0The text is something like that (my hasty translation, ignoring the rhymes and rhythm, so it won't give you any clue as to Dandellion's talent, so it's just for curiosity)"There was autumn in the aircold winds carried the words awayThis is how it must be, nothing can be changedby the diamonds at your eyelashes' endsWhere you live, it's all white with snowwith ponds and muds all glass-like from frostThis is how it must be, nothing can be changedby the longing you hide in your eyes. When spring comes, the rain will pour on the roadsThe sun will bring warmth back to the heartsThis is how it must be, for there's fire still in usan eternal fire that we call hope."

This is actually the song he sings at Shani's party if you invite Siegfried to it. I suspect it loses in translation from Polish to English, but at least the version in the game isn't much to write home about as far as the music is concerned. The other song (the one he sings if you invite Zoltan) isn't that impressive either.

IMHO, the movie version is a little better than the one in the game, but still the guy doesn't sound like a professional singer. He's not that bad, he's just not that talent Dandelion is made out to be. But then I'm rather prejudiced against Dandelion in general ;) btw, I like the matter-of-fact way how Geralt reacts when Torque asks him what he should do to wake Dandelion up near the end of "Edge of the World" ("just box his ears a few times", or something along the lines). With friends like these...

Which just goes to show that Geralt has a certain masochistic streak in him. Nonetheless, you do have a point :)

You are forgetting this is medieval music (poetry) we are talking about here ... there were different standards and no electronics (like microphone, synthetisor etc.) then.So give Dandelion a break, he´s one of my favorite characters ;) (OK, I admit, his singing at Shani´s party is kind of annoying.)Btw, the music in general is about the only good thing about the Witcher movie ... ::)

Geralt has to deal with Dandelion´s troublemaking just like Dandelion has to cope with Geralt´s fits of self-pity and pissoffness. They are completely complementary.

Oh I really debated over which one I loved the most; The Last Wish or The Lesser Evil. Both are just as captivating. I loved the whole fairytale twist in The Lesser Evil as well as the fight descriptions; Sapkowski did his research! lol I don't know really, I actually found that I love the whole book; it's just so full of little anecdotes that bring out Geralt's world and character that I can't choose one as a favourite. And as for poor old Dandilion, well, yes he does need to be shut up on occasion! The book is my favourite book atm; I've read it twice in about a week already, and I never do that. Ever!
