The Meta Explained in One Image

So, I was playing Emhyr var Emreis (against AI) and used a D-Shackles, targeting Emhyr, which prevented his deploy ability.

^ Yeah, I know.

But playing Dijkstra on an empty board and pulling Philippa would make people go:

Or the IRL variant:

Now playing all units on the same row for a juicy Igni or Hailstorm is the same thing, really. The meta will always find ways to mess up your deck. That, or the (hot)fixes from the devs. Blindly playing the same deck again without making adjustments and then complaining other decks/mechanics being too OP might be a bit... weird. Maybe you should think of opponents as if they are the Borg. You can only hit them with the same thing so many times before they become immune.

Alright, that's enough internet for now. Time to get back to work.

...you used a star trek analogy on top of it all...

Wut? How can you target something before it's deployed with Shackles? How does Shackles work against a deploy ability after it's been triggered? Don't understand. Nevermind. You played Shackles from your hand, hit your own Emhyr, which locked the remainder of his ability to pick up a card. Other cards are similar. Ithlenne had that issue as well. If the first spell she cast killed her or disabled her, you didn't get the copy. The game does a check for each part of the action to ensure the conditions are still met.

Playing Dijkstra on a cleared board is the fault of the player that played him. I don't feel sorry for someone that does that. You need to know your deck and capabilities. If you use cards like Alzur's Thunder or Shackles or Scorch or Potions and play Dijkstra with no real targets and draw them, that's your fault. I saw someone do this with a Hailstorm, too.

Outside of movement, the only reason to play units on the same row is because you want to buff them out the wazoo. Hailstorm is the counter to that. Everyone talks about 30 point swings with Hailstorm, but nobody wants to talk about HOW 60 points got on the same row to begin with. Could it be because you played 5 units wanting to use Horn for 20 more? That's just greedy.

Eh, there is an inherent risk. It's still painful golds can be sniped now, especially with a suicidal attack.

It can also be to minimize the weather damage. Besides, certain decks have units that require adjacent others to function, e.g. Wild Boar of the Sea.

Again, that's a buffing strategy. Hailstorm is there to counter the buffs without actually killing units.
