Level II Aard is a lifesaver in this fight. Those gargoyles are nasty, but all gargoyles are highly susceptible to stunning. Area-effect Aard can stop them both.

I will give this a shot. Swordman will be difficult, but you can do it, you will need impeccable reflex and luck.

Before you get into a fight, get the best sword you can(you can get them at this point in the game, and the 7% damage Runes). This will help a lot. Drink all potions and coat the blade. Quen before you talk to him.

When the fight start use only heavy attack on the operator. He will cast shield pretty quickly if you have good damage output. Now you can't hide behind pillars anymore since they are breakable. When he spawn Gargoyles, go in hit them with a few strong attacks, roll off, cast Quen if needed. Just ignore the operator. Your quen will get annihilated by fireball but you will need it. You can't get hit by Gargoyles and make it absolutely certain that you don't turn your back on them It's one hit kill most of the time.

I don't really use Aard because I don't have one. I tried about 10 times before I won. Gotta be patience. I know easier said than done but try to get best sword and armor before you fight him. Best Silver Sword is free (found in the sewer) same as best Armor, these will helps a lot. Use Dark Mode stuff if you can.

Calm down, its Dark mode its supposed to be difficult, I just did this today on Iorveth path again and I just died like 2 times before I could finish it again but well anyways.

My tips:
1. Have Quen always up
2. Watch your back in case you dont have the ability that make you recieve 100% damage in the back.
3. Before battle drink this 3 potions: Rook (+10% damage) + Swallow (for vit. regen incombat) + Cant recall the name (but it give you +30% resistance to incineration).
4. Rollfest! Yes, roll is your best friend here.
5. In case you have a lot of vigour use Aard to stun the gargyoles (remember that if you have almost no vigour you will hit less with your sword).
6. Try to put the gargyoles in the middle when you are fighting them (between you and the Operator so the Op will damage them with the fire spells).

Etc...

Oh, sheesh - I just reached this and I'm in a state of shock. None of my traditional "hide in a corner" tactics are going to work are they?

Thanks for the tips, Alberto.

I'm leaving this for tomorrow - too late at night, and I suspect it may take more than 10 minutes this time. Going to be fun though.

------------

Three attempts. Definitely different, but not as hard as I thought yesterday.
You can still hide behind pillars, just not ALL of the pillars.
Dancing Star against the Operator to trigger the gargoyles.
Fight the gargoyles. It's useful to have Deithwen for this fight, even if you normally use the DM swords (that may mean also switching out your steel sword for a while, I'm not sure how the curse works otherwise).
As Alberto said, keep Quen up at all times. I ran for the nearest pillar every time Quen went down.
After clearing each pair of gargoyles, if you can get behind a pillar and the Operator loses sight of you, you should be able to save.

Gargoyles seem to be easier to kill now, even though the explosion at the end can do damage. I suspect that's why they've modified the rest of this to make it harder.

At least they didn't change the password to get in.

I noticed that it seemed like the pillars are in different positions and you seem to stumble on rocks when there aren't any on the floor. I'm wondering if it might be a bug or something with the position of the pillars and the rocks. I gave up trying on Normal with EE. I might try again since I'm using Aard (maxed out) more than I did before. And trying to position the gargoyles might help too.

Just keep the gargoyles in the way of the operator's fireballs so they get hit by them. That's how I did it in Dark Mode. When the gargoyles are dead it's easy to go stab him/it a few times until new wave of gargoyles come and again same thing.

To me, it gives the impression of being deliberate.
I think that gargoyles are easier to kill on EE, at least it feels that way. So they've given us a special treat to rebalance it, by moving the pillars. Aren't they nice?
Once I'd got over the shock and just changed tactics, I didn't find it much harder than before.

But do remember that you can save between rounds.

I noticed there is a bug in this fight, I'm interested to see if it always appears or it's just in my game: The pillars are nearer to the walls, yes, but their collision is not there. I can walk through the visible pillars yet there are some invisible obstacles that I believe are the "true" pillars.

Screenshots detailing the issue:

When I think about it that does make sense. I was about where the old pillar was when I couldn't move so maybe that is the issue.

I must admit, I was too busy dodging to notice, but I see what you mean.

I had the exact same bug! It's infuriating because for some reason I can't avoid being hit by the AoE of the Operator's spells anymore and you can't hide behind one pillar at all anymore because it's right next to the debris.

I beat it by running around the room a lot instead of hiding behind the pillars. By the way, I turned off all the torches yet it did nothing (there was a rumor that if you do that to all 4 torches the Operator stops summoning gargoyles)

Yeah, basically Costin's tactic is what I used too. That way it works best :)

Why are you picking fights in Dark mode? Talk your way out of every fight you can!
