maybe not as much in videogames, but in general. Just think how many movies, shows,etc are loosely based on Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. Given that isn't "prehistoric" but just the same, a massive anachronism.
A truly prehistoric resource gathering strategy game would be fantastic. Humans coexisting with large mammals, anticipating the cold and heat, social management through proto religion, etc.
As far as fiction goes, the coexistence of elves and humans is more believable than the coexistence of dinosaurs and humans. Among other things, the oxigen levels in the atmosphere in the dinosaur geologic ages, affecting their massive growth, would be poisonous to us.
At least Turok has (or had) over the top violence, which made it more fun than serious. I still have my Turok 2 laying around somewhere
