I had expected it to sell more.

It's only out on PC so far, and it's been out for less than half a year. Considering that, I think a million sales is quite good. The only games I can think of which do better are multiplatform and/or really popular well-known names that have an established reputation combined with a really heavy advertising campaign.

I look at those numbers and I would say that they are still on the edge or even slightly under the cost of Witcher 2 development. So we defninitely need moar.

Didn't I read about 8 million dollars production cost? I seem to remember that it was insanely little money compared to what EAWare spends on a (bad) game. So even though I admit I suck at math, about 50 million income doesn't compute as under cost of production in my book.

Just like you can't compare the sales of a EAWare game over 3 platforms with what CDPR accomplished here. The Witcher was their maiden voyage, while BioWare have been famous for RPG's for years and with the EA budget for advertisement hype at their back, that's a whole new league of awesome for TW2 to even compete with that!

It's not quite that simple (I think they get ~30% of the money from retail sales, ~70% from Steam, and 100% from GoG) so it doesn't work out to $50 multiplied by the sales. But either way, I think you're completely right. A million sales should definitely be enough for them to make a profit considering how low the production costs were compared to most other high-profile games :D

If only 20% of the sales are Digital, and most of the retail sales are omitted...doesn't it mean that the game sold a lot more?

Wow good for them! I hope some of the nasty pirates actually went out and bought it.
