The Witcher 2 sold 1.1 million copies in 2011

Fantastic PC (and soon Xbox 360) RPG, The Witcher 2, sold 1,110,055 copies last year, developer CD Projekt Red has revealed.

Of those copies, 270,000 were sold via digital distribution platforms: 40,000 on GOG.com, which leaves the lion's share of the remainder presumably to Steam (numbers not disclosed).

But most "remarkable" to CDPR managing director Adam Badowski, was that 401,543 copies of The Witcher 1 were sold last year.

"I have to admit, though, that the sales results for The Witcher, five years on from the game's premier, are remarkable," he commented.

"If anything, they prove that the content we put into our games ages well."

"The Witcher will continue to generate buzz in the coming years."

Eurogamer recently cornered Adam Badowski for a lengthy chat. He and marketing manager Michal Platkow-Gilewski revealed that CD Projekt Red was already working towards the next generation of consoles. On those machines will be the developer's next two major new games: one a new IP, the other The Witcher 3. They'll arrive simultaneously for PC and next-generation consoles in 2014/15. Witcher those games will arrive when, and Witcher the platforms they'll be on, were questions that couldn't be answered.

Consider that the new IP is being built by a team that's only just being put together, though, and it's likely that project will take longer to make. We also wallowed on the topic of The Witcher 2 for PS3; talked about how expensive that new CGI Witcher 2 trailer was; and discussed possible next-generation technology not allowing pre-owned games to be played.

You go, CDPR!

Great to hear TW1 sold another 400k, too. Here's to another million or twenty.

That picture!

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear the sales figures :D It also makes me feel conspiratorial because several of those Witcher 1 sales were me buying the game for friends at Christmas, so when I read the article I was like, "Yay, I helped!" :p

400k copies of TW1 sold, 5 years later? That is amazing!

And to think, some people are asking for a remake. Masterpieces dont need remakes ;).

I hope TW2 will have a long lifespan as well. Of course, having a toolkit would help :p.

Nice :)

Now gief us the toolkit so we can mod and release stuff. That way TW2 will continue to sell for a very very long time :)

The only reason TW1 sold so well was because TW2 was released the same year. Many people who enjoy a sequel will often go back to play the prequel. I know i did that with Mass Effect 2.

So presumably, it's because of TW2 that TW1 sold so well last year.

Anyway, 1.1 million in one year is tops.

Of course :D I think that's part of what they were saying, that not only did TW2 sell very well but it also encouraged a lot of people to buy the first game as well :D

CDProjekt deserve and have earned it. I bought TW1 like a month ago and can't stop playing it. Such an awesome game! Hopefully TW2 on Xbox will prove to be a success, and boost the PC sales, as well. But I'm confident it will. Both of the games are true marbles.

Hopefully it will do even more due to Xbox owners + the people who'll jump in to it on PC thanks to the enchanced edition.

i hope the 360 sells loads, i don't care if they say "look it sold more on console" because well Atari is not a real publisher(in my eyes) while 360 has Warner Bros!

1 million is quite shit, this game deserves so much more!!!!

I think in the future CDPR should implement some kind of online activation which would increase the sales and reduce the chance of being so easily cracked and uploaded to millions. maybe something to do with .exe/luncher file which can check if the content is original or not on first few lunches just a example.
1.1 million is really good for a PC game. But 2.2+ would be better and I deeply believe its possible with some good strategy plan or small tricks to make it more difficult to bypass.

They did have online activation for the retail version. They removed it with one of the patches because it was causing technical problems for legitimate customers.

Didn't notice or I simply cant remember. Still their should be some sneaky way to make it hard to bypass and play. CDP have some smart guys working for them Im sure they will come up with something.

nope.. no sneaky thing there...

i haven't bought the game yet.. and i wanted to try it out.. so i got TW2 on the web and..

2 days ago i just putted a random serial number and add access to all Updates! ALL!! till 2.1 version!
their server is accepting any set of numbers as a serial number! (ex: 12345) o_O

i kind felt bad! told my father and even he was like - WTF???

but i liked the game and im gonna buy it as soon as i can as a symbolic gesture cause (unlike many) CDprojektRED deserves it!

2-3 YEARS??? i have time then.. ^^ plenty of time!!
