The Witcher 3 Demo

Hi again dear fellow gamers and CD Projekt Red

While watching Cyberpunk 2077 trailer (again) I thought about posting something on witcher forums . It didn't took enough time after that and the thought of The Witcher 3 demo came in my mind . Now there are some really good benefits of doing a demo for the game if done correctly .

1- It will allow users to give feedback to CDPR , which will result in more polished final product .

2- A free , well executed and less space occupying demo will allow new people to try the demo , which will attract new people toward this title .

3- Those who have concerns about running the game on their PCs will be able to check the game and it will give them time to upgrade their rigs before the final product comes out .

4- Giving demo to the players will prevent them to try the game by wrong ways .

5- Will allow CDPR to know about the issues and further tweak the game before this masterpiece comes out .

So guys do you agree with me .? Do you have some other benefits of the demo in mind .? If you have then kindly share them . Let CDPR take notice by discussion . Have a nice day .

What you describe is more like a beta. Making a demo costs resources and time which they might not have, but in any case, a demo can never be bad (unless the game in question is bad).

EDIT: What I mean by demo is a demo in the usual sense of the word. One that is released maybe a week or two before the final release date, or at release.

Use a new arena as the demo?

When I played Mass Effect 3 demo before game release it had some serious lag problems . I went to their forums and there a lot of people were complaining about that . There was no lag in the final product . A lot people try the game by downloading it from torrent sites , they say we have to check the game because this is demanding game and there was no demo out there .

I disagree with this. CDPR should make the best possible game with respect to their vision and desires. It's ridiculous to expect them to please everyone with the final product, and it's practically impossible.

They should utilize a test group instead of releasing a demo. There are just too many things that can go wrong with demo releases and hyping player expectations- there's the risk that following demo release players and reviewers will be too busy looking at what's missing in the game than what's not.

A demo release is usually a bad idea.

In principle, it seems like a good idea (an enclosed area where players can try out gameplay).
However, it being an "Arena" is somewhat of a problem, especially if tied to the tutorial in the way it was in W2.
It might get new players the wrong idea of how the witcher world and Geralt works (especially if told in a "story" like it was in the tutorial). There is no way Geralt would compete in Arena death-watches and neither would many of the adversaries/contestants/monsters be there.

I think "monster hunting" in an specific area would be a better demo.

Actually it's proven scientifically that demos are decreasing sales of the games. So you pay money to make a demo that decrease your sales - bad deal. ;)

First of all, don't take my answer to this topic as official information about The Witcher 3 demo - it's way too early to say anything. But going back to your post, this is something I can't agree with (even if the results are documented;)), simply because I can name a lot of demos that actually made me purchase the full game. There were a few of them that put me off certain games but it's really a minority. I do enjoy demos and like trying them out:)

If there really has to be a demo. Arena or something similar like small dungeon is definitely a good idea for a demo. Combat and visuals presentation. I recon every demo should end with cliffhanger or have a special area created just for demo purposes.

Perhaps if TW3 will have a solid mutliplayer or co-op and developers are curtain it can do well, they could release the closed beta. PSN/XBL market are the place where demo like this should end up being.

I really don't like story based demos, not that fun and TW3 is story based and open world so. If it was an arena mode demo the combat has to be really good, successful demos are ones where you play it more than other actual games. Can CDPRs TW3 combat do that with ordinary consumers not just with us rabid fans?

I would prefer a timed demo like Kingdom of Amalur. It's possible to actually run around in the world but we only had 20 minutes to do so.

Rather than a demo, you could rent the game at a video store when it comes out to see if you like it before you purchase the game!

I don't think TW3 is going to have a demo looking at the past record but hey I can be wrong who knows. But the point is if I made up my mind to buy I game I would do it anyways unless it is a very rare thing that I feel it is not going to be worth it.

It could be hacked though like what happened in the Mafia 2 demo.

I guess you are referring to that DICE guy and his talk. Showing a single vague graph isn't proving anything let alone 'scientifically'. You simply can't compare sales of games with and without demos, as most do not fall into the same category with their budget, marketing and genre. Such a lackluster comparison is going to fail if you include franchises as Battlefield and CoD.

And the Just Cause 2 demo. That was one hell of a demo that felt like a full game, so much fun.

Worth reading Game demos can cut game sales in half.

I'm not too sure.
It's best to ask what's the point of a full fledged open demo as opposed to, say, group testing it?
Debugging? it's a limited demo, not really worth it.
Persuade undecided buyers? What's their estimated share? Skyrim sure didn't need a demo to persuade newcomers to the series such as myself.

Nah, it would spoil all the fun.
