Novigrad's population is almost 30k actually. It's the biggest city in the North.

Size of area @70km^2. The 1.2km x 1.2km is scaling a known Mediaeval cities population density to 30,000 persons. I was reading that as being the city population. Of course if *that* is regional too, then the population inside the walls need only be in the region of 15,000-20,000, which is closer to that which I personally estimate for the later map of Amsterdam that is in this thread.

I wouldn't use that size at such liberty, at least not until we get confirmation.
And it's a city in a game, so we can't realistically expect Novigrad to actually have 30.000 inhabitants.

We really don't know much about this game. I remember Witcher 2 was going to be "completely open world", without black screens while entering/leaving a building (this was even on some gameplay footage)", "you could throw a bomb through a window" ect. . . There's a lot of time. Things may change. Or get cut :)

Thanks for the info.. I don't know about you guys but i'm going crazy i need to see some gameplay or something asap. When are CDPR going to show some footage or maybe another trailer... :rebel:

OMG shut up and breathe... lol
We have untill E3. Also I was told every time they make a trailer/video for us the whole cdpr team has to stop working on the game.
So my advice to you is to chill out man. I want a better game that has less bugs and that looks and plays the very best. The trailer can wait :)

It's exciting to think that the world could be that large, but come on, the city of Novigrad alone, being larger than all of Skyrim? It has to be some kind of mistake or misinterpretation.

You can see the edge of the city in the vgx trailer and an aerial view of the whole city in the debut trailer. That's not larger than all of Skyrim.

It took a day to build the city.

RED guys, better end this before it gets out of control and people get so hyped up about the size they end up terribly disappointed later.

Most likely a big part of it is unaccessible like in The Witcher 2 where you have a lot of skyboxes and definite paths which lead from one location to another. Which is exactly the shit I was arguing about in this thread: http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/21140-about-the-quot-open-world-quot

That would mean that its not as "open" as games like STALKER, Fallout or Skyrim.

Highly doubt it. They wouldn't boast an open world if it was just like TW2. They're not idiots.

erm, it would still be open world.
TW2 was open world too, only that it had multiple maps for the different chapters.
Fully Open World simply means that the different maps are now connected without loading screen. doesnt make the map itself more "open"

Then you and I have different definitions of open world.

Devs have said there won't be any barriers like in TW2. "If you see a mountain in the distance, you will be able to climb it" and other things like that are often spoken in interviews, I doubt it's all fluff.

Don't forget that not ALL of the city's population will be on the streets complaining about taxes or even within the city gates. A percentage of people will be unaccounted for (merchants, visitors, etc) and probably roughly 65-80% of 30,000 will be the estimate for people outside during the day scattered and walking throughout the city.
(These are just assumptions on how they're going to handle the population, but it's a clue-up for people who are expecting to see 30,000+ people in Geralts face.)

I'm quite curious on how they're going to handle night-life though, is it going to have an abandoned drug-dealer feel like Vizima or will it be half as populated with people circulating taverns and brothels?

The 20% bigger than skyrim thing was only mentioned early when the game was announced, instead, they kept the "35 times bigger than TW2" thing much more prevalent as time passed, so maybe we should start making maths for that.

Anybody knows a pretty trustworthy estimate of the size of TW2? because what the slides say may be a mistake, but 20% bigger than skyrim sounds very very far away from what 35 times TW2 would be.

If the world of TW3 is both, 20% BTS( 46km2 aprox.) and 35 TTW2, that would make the world of the witcher 2 just 1.3 km2, which sounds extremely small and inaccurate, so on one hand, the skyrim comparison makes the game much smaller than the numbers we get from the slides, or the neogaf poster, or dualshockers, but the TW2 comparison makes the game to be closer to the big unconfirmed numbers, so which one is it?

Imo this news is BS anyways.

I mean this "city of novigrad", I guess its a city and not just the name of an area, is 72,25 square km big while skyrim as a whole is "only" 14 square miles. That city is bigger than skyrim
that is ridiciulous and doesnt make sense at all.

Especially as they said that its 20% bigger.

Novigrad is often considered as the city and its surroundings, as a whole area, and skyrim is close to 14 square miles, not kilometers, in km2 skyrim is about 34

which I already corrected before your post and is irrelevant as its still bigger than skyrim.
even if it includes the surroundings, that one area would already be twice as big.
That 20% they stated doesnt fit at all. Actually you cant change the map size in that extend in that state of development.
