I'm going to quote the OP, which establishes the actual topic of this thread.

"I think that that message loses much of its impact if the world always looks like a shitty place, but keeps its punch if you're traveling, say, in the beautiful Skellige archipelago, and then suddenly come across an act of deep cruelty. It's that contrast and sudden shift that I think make it powerful, and prevent it from becoming hackneyed."

The actual, and only valid, topic of this thread is whether the visuals of the game reinforce its mood and themes, and whether these do so by contrast rather than conformity.

Ah, fair enough.

STALKER: Call of Pripyat has some of the most convincing nights I have ever experienced in a game and I'm fairly certain some were moonless as some were so dark you could barely see a damn thing without a flashlight or nightvision.

If the Witcher 3 has nights that even comes close to the ones I experienced in Call of Pripyat, I will be very impressed.

The blue moonlight is due in part to the moisture in the air, condensation level and speed of movement (wind) and other particles. As the sky or the sea.

Wait, this nonsense is still going ?.. people, don't you have something better to do with your time? come here again when the game is released.. when you're going to see the game on your monitors/Tv, and not from YT videos

Of course it is, this downgrade talk turned the discussion into a joke thread once again, like Naughtius Maximus or Biggus Dickus. :D

But in the case of Biggus Dickus I was actually laughing :)

Right now I'm convinced that a variety of factors (compression, time of day, pre-release version etc.) are the cause for the difference in the screenshots. If (and this is a big IF) however, the released game on the highest settings don't look like the original vfx, I would at least expect CD Projekt Red to give us a reason why, or perhaps release an enhanced edition adding options for it to look like that (adding a sharpness filter wouldn't be too much work - like the vignette filter in W2). Basically I'm giving CDP Red the benefit of the doubt - you guys have been one of the more upstanding companies in the industry recently.
As of right now, I'm stoked for release - preordered on GOG and ready to preload :D

Kwame: Let our powers combine! EARTH! (I mean Grass)
Wheeler: FIRE!
Linka: WIND!
Gi: WATER!
Ma-Ti: HEART! (I mean Yennefer and Triss)
- By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet - I mean Downgrade!
Downgraders: GO PLANE!

Again, I'm sorry - I had to... :p

I think it's just the colors that are bothering me.
But there isn't much ripple or movement in the water, in any of these vids.

Not worried though. This sort of thing is pretty easily modable

Watched all the latest vids, still don't see the impressive interior litghitng TW2 had:

I'm sorry, but when Geralt enters an interior in the latest vids, lighting seems flat. I dont see the kind of atmosphere we had in TW2. Maybe I just prefer the environment design , the lighting, but something is missing in TW3.

you should post comparison screenshots from comparable environments. one's a cave with ambient lighting, the other's a corridor with torches. why are you expecting them to look anything alike?

Hmm just out of curiosity.... these two images.... have completely different lightning conditions.... why are you comparing those two? (Serious question... maybe I'm looking at wrong things...)

They aren't comparisons, both are from TW2. As I said, I don't see this kind of atmosphere and ambient lighting in the interiors in TW3. I mentioned this months ago, actually. Fire up TW2 and go into arena mode, then explore the hut where you talk to the mercenaries. The lighting and density of atmosphere is like nothing I've seen in TW3. I'm not talking graphics, I'm talking lighting and effects. In TW3 It looks...like you aren't indoors.

I agree with much of what you have been posting, but also think much of what has transpired over the week in regards to media release is very inconsistent (from a psychology point of view). Why don't we wait until the game is released to see what has transpired, and then pass judgement?

technology and techniques have improved over the last few years, so i think it's rather a good thing that it no longer looks like that. sometimes, a more life-like look takes a little getting used to. remember when games used to be all brown and blurry? that was considered atmospheric and realistic at the time. now, not so much.

LMAO. If one thing has been inconsistent, it's the materials from CDPR and the lack of clarity. But whatever, I get it, it's a WIP. It's consoles, no...it's PC, we think *check Twitter*. on low/ultra/high/stupendous settings! I mean come on, few devs obfuscate so much. Just show your shit. Show what you got.
