It isn't so much of a filter as it is that the textures are sharper and there is tessellation. Without it, it looks like a flat texture.

Now the facebook page is saying that we actually haven't seen ultra or something? 0.O https://www.facebook.com/DEthewitcher/posts/692085600919698

Just look at the replies.

That's crap, the youtubers played on ultra settings, face it ps4 and PC versions will be nearly identical.

Do you honestly think that the difference in those pictures comes from youtube compression and sharpening filter?

Well, the problem with cheap sharpening filters like the ones used in earlier screenshots is that they affect the image quality, you can notice the artefacts it leaves. Same reason why some people like, say, chromatic aberration, DoF, motion blur etc. and others don't. Either way, on PC, effects such as sharpening are fairly easy to add.

Oh, I'm not discussing the comparisons, got tired of that 2 threads ago. Just explaining the sharpening.

Yeah I was just referring to how the rock walls are higher poly and/or more tessellated.

It's either:
1) Youtubers are faking their claims saying that they're playing on ultra (since CDPR said they won't reveal ultra settings until the game has been released)
2) Youtubers played on ultra WITH some super duper hyper gorgeous graphics settings restricted by CDPR, only to be released for PC only after the game is launched
3) PC Ultra is literally 'a slap on pc gamers'

sharpening filters must be an option, textures look way better with sharpening

A few who? Is that actually what happened? I'm only wondering here because when those screens and the vgx trailer were released I never noticed anyone complaining about the sharpening filter.

Still hopeful it can make a comeback as a graphics option.

So I took the screenshot from the uncompressed video to make it fairer instead of comparing a youtube images against a promotional image:

Honestly I think somethings are worse and better in both the newer and older. The monster looks better to me in the newer material (with sharpening) as do Geralt. The surrounding I preferred the older material.

The second option is possible because i didnt notice HBAO+ for example watching these "Ultra" footage. So yeah, as i said earlier - relax and wait for release :p .

That sharpening filter you used for that image looks really awful, I don't think if they applied a filter to the game that it would make it look that bad. The one in the top shot is more like a noise/sharpen i think.

The shots from the uncompressed video are so muddy and stylized compared to the top shot, they're just straight up ugly.

I still can't imagine how something like that top image could look that good, somehow ends up looking like this..... why did this happen :( it's depressing.

The Witcher 1 foliage is on par if not better than what we are seeing here.

I know, WTF is going on? The foliage is just plain awful now, and the worst part of it, it's everywhere!

The sharpening filter might be over the top but I used the tools available to me here (vlc player) I don't have photoshop on this computer but on my laptop which could have done a better job but my better half have that with her.

Anyway I thought it was the general consensus by most that a sharpening filter had been applied to the older material unless I misunderstand you :)

And personally while I agree the original image is superior I don't think the difference in this instance is gigantic and straight forward. The surrounding environment is defiantly better in the older image no doubt about that but to me the monster is better in the new one and so is Geralts model. That is of course just my opinion. Not to mention this was captured from a video by amateur little me while the original is a promotional photoshopped bullshot edited by professional marketing people.

If I ever get the game I will personally be playing with a sharpening filter if possible. I believe sweetFX can do this though I am not sure :)

How about they give us the option to turn 'optimization' off!

it looks more like a stylized design decision rather than optimization. I mean, the grass in this game looks like plastic paper now, at least in the screenshots it does. That leans more towards stylized direction rather than something related to optimization. Optimization can easily be achieved with good looking grass by changing how much grass is spawning in an area and various other techniques like reducing its resolution and whatnot by giving its own setting like gta 5 did.

Grass looks completely fake to me. Their earlier stuff was a lot better. It may or may not have been affected by wind I don't know, but man... it completely changes the look of the game.
