Well, @Docttj this month has some of the bigger releases together (2 ACs, DAI, GTAV, FC4) with Ubi and EA being some of the most greedy DLC related companies, not comparable at all with your list, adding to that there's three and a half months to TW3 release it's obvious what they did.

GTA V is also releasing on PC in January. Nintendo has like 3 new games coming out in December and Amiiboos have had controversy recently regarding locking content across a ton of games. The Crew is a ubisoft game.

The industry itself is full of greed and bad business practices that any company releasing free DLC could be seen as a message no matter when they do it. If they announced this a month before it would have been probably taken as a shot at EA/Ubi just the same and a month later it would still be seen as taking a shot. I don't believe there could ever be a time they could announce free content without it being taken by some people as a shot at another company. That's just how terrible the gaming industry is at this point. If you disagree, fine. I just think that no matter when they announced this it would be seen the same way as it is now

It isn't a cheap shot though... it is a free one.

Damn you, REDs! Damn you for throwing free stuff at me, how dare you!

Anyway, guys, remember to say 'free DLC' the proper way.

Of course anytime they announce it would be seen suspiciously, the moment chosen makes it just clear enough cause the bunch together (AAA games with really long campaigns, RPG elements or pure RPGs and lots of DLCs) and shared elements, Nintendo games or The Crew are different leagues than those.

I don't know how to take this DLC news. On one hand, I have broadband internet with uncapped data, it is easy for me to get these DLC's and I will be getting the DLC.

But on the other hand. I have been convincing friends, family, colleagues and just random people, who don't have internet, to buy the game. It's because there is no internet requirement that I can get these people to even consider buying the game on PC. But now if I tell them that there is day 1 game content that you can only get through internet, even if the DLC is small in size, they will tell me, Fuck That. I know a lot of people that can't / won't be getting the DLC.

I would have liked for CD Projekt RED to release a complete game without DLC and then maybe release an expansion pack after, that could be sold in retail and digital markets. So I'm still not sure if these DLC's are a good idea.

It is the complete game, additional content is anecdotic. It’s something they’ll be doing around/post release anyway, they’re still filling the World with content whatsoever. So it’s not like they holding out content like game makers sometimes do via hiding a part of the World locked up for DLC or something, the game will be complete on release.

Internet is kind of required for games nowadays. It's a sad truth. It doesn't matter if you're on PC or console anymore. Tons of games get day 1 patches or updates that fix a lot of issues. Consoles are constantly getting firmware updates. At least with TW3 it's DRM free and you can probably install any patches or updates through a USB. You would have to of course get internet somewhere to do that first though.

I'm sorry, this might sound a bit harsh, but... Who the hell doesn't have internet connection these days? Especially if we're talking about people who even play games.

I didn't insinuate that the game will not be complete. I am talking about game + DLC on release day. The focus now is not the game but the game + DLC.I can get this but I can't get that. So there will be people, with the new game + DLC focus who won't then bother buying the game on release day because if I can't get that why bother with this. DLC should have been separate from the focus of game on release day but now it's game + DLC on release day. But I will see how people react to this. I'm hoping it doesn't matter.

No matter when they released DLC people would have a hard time getting it if they had absolutely no access to internet. They could maybe wait to see if they release a GOTY edition or go to some public place with internet (There are tons of them in America at least) and download the patches to a USB from some public PC or go to a friends house. I find it hard to believe that some people without internet or friends would know about this content

1. There are families who need only one internet cable, so you can double/triple your 360 million users already.
2. The biggest part of people in the world mostly consists poor people.
3. Poor people have bigger concerns than buying pc games.
4. If they are considering buying Witcher 3 they must have a VERY good PC, therefore they are prolly AT LEAST somewhere around medium finances, which should also be enough to get the internet.

Therefore most of the gamers (especially with the high-end hardware) are expected to have internet connection.

There are more than 3 billion internet users worldwide and not 360 million. (there arealmost twice as much alone in china)
Looking at the markets witcher 3 is going to be released the internet user rate should be 90%+

Honestly, this. If they are buying it on console then they still have to worry about patches and firmware and all that. They still bought a $400-500 console which you could easily build a good PC for that much. If are buying on PC then they probably have built their own PC and you need internet to order some of the parts in a lot of areas. I think anyone buying this game would probably have internet or have the money to have some sort of internet connection.

This is awesome news.

Yes it's marketing - you need to be dumb to not see it.

Yes it's free - which is you know.....great!

Yes it will make Witcher more covered in the news just like GTA online has monthly 'free' updates oh and also shark cards which you have to buy because all online jobs have been tweaked to gain you very little money and new vehicles/guns/clothes are way too expensive....so yeah GTA online is almost 'free to play' which isn't case with Witcher 3

Now one thing I really like and that's stab at Bugthesda and their horse armor dlc which wasn't only overpriced but the biggest problem with it was that it didn't do what it was supposed to do and that's to protect your horse. In other words it was purely cosmetic. That was problem.

I also like that this is also message to other devs and hopefully Bioware with their first dlc being exclusive to Xbox (fuck you MS and EA) and Bugthesda and other formerly great devs might learn that being good does pay off in a long run.

Now I have few questions:

Will possibly DICE minigame make a return as one of 12 remaining unannounced dlcs, cause that would be awesome?

How big these dlcs will be and will they include new features, quests, locations etc?

And will there be any meaty, big, priced EXPANSION down the line with entire new areas, quests, monsters, features etc? When I say expansion I have on my mind Shivering Isles for Oblivion,Awakining for DA:Origins,Dragonborn for Skyrim,Bloodmoon for Morrowind etc.

So will we have this post release support policy:

small - mediumish content - FREE DLC

big expansions - PAID (anywhere from 20 to 35 bucks)

I would GLADLY pay for expansion so if it's not too early to coment on it,CD Projekt....are there any such plans at least?

Some people seem to think that the game will be magically finished, certified and shipped to the entire world on the morning of February 24th.
