I was on IGN lately and in the comments section all they we're doing was fighting over which was better than the other. Skyrim vs. Dark Souls vs. The Witcher 2, it's the same cycle over and over again. All three of the games are GAMES and should be respected for what they are and not what others say what they want it to be.

It depends on the measure you are using; what I think some have thought to be slightly unfair is trying to compare one game to another on a quality that one emphasizes and the other does not, or that one achieves in a way quite different from the other. For example, to compare attention to the story line in The Witcher 2 and Dark Souls is not all that meaningful and can lead to arguments if you try to use that comparison say that one game has greater merit.

When two game franchises have a history of implementing a feature (say, combat) in very different ways, your own formulation is a much better question:

I am not in agreement with your depiction of what had been going on here.

But I'd be more than happy to have a private exchange with you on logical fallacies and commensurability. Frankly speaking, you seem to have not noticed that the practical result of claiming DS and TW2 are not comparable is to simply overshadow that very question you deem relevant.

The same crap goes on international forums as well. Unfortunately a lot of people are confused and believe that "good" or "better" are synonyms with "what I like" or"what I like more", and the opposite. Therefore any kind of rational agreement, or the end of such discussion is not possible. Either it is something that will pass when teenagers actually see a light of reason, or a general condition of some human beings I cannot say.

I can certainly agree with that. For example, I'm not keen on Tom Waits and yet I'd never dream of calling him a lousy singer.

Having said that, I don't believe there's anything inherently wrong with saying X is better than Y or even that Z is a bad, even crappy movie, or game, van, pillow or Swiss army knife.

Oh another witcher vs dark souls thread. Imo dark souls is terrible rpg because it offers nothing except combat. There, i said it. Witcher 3 should improve in areas where second game really was lacking, like character developement, social skills intimidation/axii and diplomacy also stealth in general. Combat in tw2 was fine and devs already confirmed that they replace rolls with pirouettes, that was my only gripe with tw2 combat.

I agree with you in the stealth aspect, because it was really lacking it in The Witcher 2.

Well, as long as people are at least trying to support their opinions, it is fine. I don't like any of GTA games, though for many people they are masterpieces of gaming. But I can accept that these are good games. Concerning video games I am always trying to frame in terms of my likes or dislikes. I can't really say why I like DS combat more then TW2 combat. About a story I can tell why I find one story better then the other, but whether it meets some aesthetic or literary criteria, I do not know. I do believe that there are some objective (or may be conventional) criteria to judge such things, as they exist in other areas. For example, I can tell when one student philosophy paper is better then the other even if they are on wildly different topics, because I know criteria for a student philosophy paper, and for a quality of argumentation, and this is not just a matter of opinion.

I agree with you. It is not entirely a matter of opinion.

What had been so commendable about the thread is that people who pulled comparisons actually bothered to cite at least one criterion. Nothing that could remotely be associated with mindless bashing was really at stake here.

When two A ) roleplaying B ) video games which C ) place heavy emphasis on combat (albeit to different extents) are found to be uncomparable because allegedly what they're trying to accomplish is vastly different I'm left wondering what level of abstraction is thus required to meaningfully and rightfully compare any two items.

I personally loathe the Apples and Oranges idiom. It sure is one of the most widespread and misused memes ever to surface, even counting the culinary blasphemy that goes by the name of Chop Suey.

Dark Souls combat mechanic is dumb, the character moves like a doll.
that's an important part of the gameplay, is it not ?

That much is true. Ds Player Character animations feel a bit robotic and all in all graphics aren't the most pleasing. But that does not belong to the realm of gameplay mechanics, which, I believe, is what he was alluding to.

In an adventure game, which is all about asking around, finding that and . . . , movement is not part of the gameplay. but in a game which is action based, movement and animation is an important part of the gameplay. it makes you feel the surroundings and live in the game.

Dark Sould might have "better" combat, if you prefer it, because it focusses more on it. But as far as I understand the term "gameplay", it doesn't just include combat, at least not in The Witcher. We have many other mechanics, that are at least as important. Of course crafting and alchemy might be in DS as well (never played it, so it is just a guess), but thinking about choice and consequences is a gameplay mechanic as well.

Ok, so if I just focus on combat: As the question was asked "Would The Witcher gain from a combat like in DS"? Maybe, if you are someone that enjoyed DS and also enjoy The Witcher. To me, it would probably annoy me more, than it would add. I have the deepest respect for DS players, cause the combat would be too challenging for me. But it is just not what I am looking for. So for me DS combat in The Witcher game wouldn't be better, I would say, maybe even worse. I could probably tolerate it, if there was an easy difficulty, but let's not get anywhere near the "Should DS have difficulty levels" or "Should DS be more accessible to casual gamers"-discussion. I don't consider myself a casual gamer, but I am not looking for a combat challenge, when I play The Witcher, but rather for a good immersive, complicated and difficult story.

So, I think, we all agree, that there can be some improvement on TW2 combat. (And they seem to be on the right track for that, if you believe the interviews.) But would DS combat be better for TW3 or would TW3 gain from it? For some - sure, for others - maybe, for me or for each and everyone - probably not.

So in the end, it is a design decision for them. Do they want more difficult combat? Yes or No? I think, they rather want to keep the difficulty level and just improve on it, from a handling standpoint (interruptable animations, evasions...).

And as others said: It is all a matter of taste, which combat is "better" (meaning, which one I prefer more). Better can be a more valid attribute, if they improve the combat, like they plan, rather than changing it to DS, which would make it completely different. And for different combat it is a matter of pinions and tastes, which one is better, but responsiveness, ease of handling are things, that can be more easily compared.

Ok I'm going to bounce in here and say no, TW3 would not benefit from DS combat. I have played it, I appreciate it for what it is and understand its popularity. There is a fundamental difference in how those two games are intended to be played by their respective devs. In DS you are expected to die, learn, die, learn, etc. It is a core part of the game. Such a game mechanic simply doesn't suit the like of the Witcher.

There are games were I accept character death as a part of the process, but there are others were I want to be able to survive the whole thing.

Just my personal preference, please don't kill me.

What the hell? How come this thread has degenerated into a "Witcher vs Skyrim vs Dark Souls" thread? Hai u guys. U guys. Stahp. Plox? Kthxbai.

I thought we were supposed to discus whether or not we think that The Witcher 3 will end up pushing the genre forward as a whole or if they're just hyping up their game and overvaluing their own skills and ambition.

And it does suck major balls that we probably won't see any trailer - gameplay or otherwise - before E3. I need my Withcer fix :(

I was under the impression one would get not one but two trailers before E3, where no trailers at all will be released but the game will be demoed in private.

Where did you get that info?
