980s easily, the 970s, in SLI might not be very favourable at that resolution. I guess in the end it depends on how much VRAM TW3 ends up using but a friend of mine(also a hardware reviewer) had 970s in SLI and tested multiple games at 1440p and basically he had quite a lot of pronounced issues so that's what I base it on.

Yeah, I was thinking going with the rig with the single GTX 980. I've yet to OC it, but I'm hoping that at 1440p with that GTX 980 I can get a consistent 30FPS with TW3 set to ultra settings.

A single 980 can manage 30 fps at 1440p/ultra (overclocking can help) though for 60 fps at that resolution or higher you need a pair of them. If you're going with 1080p then I'll go with 970 SLI than a single 980 because 970 SLI can give you more freedom for cranking up AA.

Even though my knowledge in laptops is limited, i'd say it's possible.

^ GTX 770 is the recommended GPU and they said that recommended is good for med-high at 1080p/30fps though GTX 770M is not going to be as powerful as the desktop variant so yes with overclocking you'll be okay for med-high.

GTX 970(best variant) or Sapphire 290 Tri OC?

For overall gaming, i'm hoping to achieve 1080p @ 60fps on high with this game though.
Most forums etc pick the 290 (due to the Sapphire beating it in most benchmarks despite being cheaper with more VRAM) but I see a lot of people still recommending the 970 over it making me stress the fuck out lol.

Any direct comparisons with the 290 sapphire and any 970 (preferiably it's best variation) would be amazing, most comparisons are of the stock 290 (which has a lower OC / terrible cooler) and a third party 970 which gives misleading results.

Thanks in advance

No(edited the original post to clear it up). I mean he tested dual 970s in multiple games and came to the conclusion that 970 SLI at 1440p are not a good combination.

Ok, I've got enough money to contemplate spending a bit on upgrades, even if my current machine *might* run it at lowest settings. Not wanting to waste money though, nor to do a complete replacement unless it will give significantly more performance for minimal additional outlay.

My current box contains:
Asus P8Z68V-lx main board, i5-2400 @3.1GHz, SATA HDD & USB external HDD (ea 500GB, both stuffed full). 32GB DDR3
GT430 1GB PCIe card, 350W PSU
The monitor is at it's EOL and needs replacement soon/now - it was never high quality and is not as clear as it was only a few months ago. (It is also only 1440x900, and I find this makes working on two documents awkward compared to when I had a larger screen in the past.

I'm looking at adding a 1TB SATA drive, and a cheap, but competent monitor. There is also *just* enough to add a new PSU and GPU.
Planned additions are currently:
Phillips 242G5DJEB 24"
Seagate SV35.6 series 7200 HDD
Antec 550W Gold
MSI GTX970 (1279MHz) (4GB, but yes I know 3.5GB ish plus a bit more at dead slow).

Are there any problems with any of these items in themselves or with the target system? Equivalents with better performance or price/performance ratio? Total cost for these items will come to around £615, which is enough to want to be careful with.

I'd go with at least a 650W 80%+ PSU just to be safe. GTX-970 requires minimum of 500W PSU. Also two 6-pin power connectors are required for GTX-970 (according to nvidia specs) but any modern PSU has those. i5-2400 is under the minimum requirements but my guess is it'll still do the job.

EDIT: An SSD drive might help with the streaming but since you have whopping 32GB of RAM you might not need one at least for the game. Of cource there is nowhere I can know this for sure until the game is out. But an SSD will certainly speed up all the loading times.

Before I bought my 970 I looked into this. The two cards are fairly close in quality. However there are several things that swung me towards the 970.

1) It's power draw is less than the 290 and yet it's performance is equal to or greater, in some cases, than the 290.
2) It's close in performance to the 980 but costs much less (shave at least 2-300 off in terms of price).
3) Nvidia are partnered with CD Projekt (I got my copy of the Witcher 3 for just buying a 970) so Nvidia cards will probably perform a bit better.

The last thing I'd consider is if the 290 is set up for DX12 or if it will be. I knew the 970 would be. I also got a MSI 970 so overclocking should be a piece of cake. The most demanding game I've thrown at the 970 since I got it was Dragon Age: Inquisition which is very hard on gpu's. My old 660 ti had some issues at high/ultra but the 970 eats DAI for breakfast.

We already know that gtx 980 and i7-4790 CPU can run witcher 3 on ultra and 60 frames if the monitor is 1080p.

What do you think is needed for that performance if the monitor is instead 1440p? There is such monitor on sale in my local electronics store and I am considering it with that in mind. you see.:smiling:

All we know is it was running at 60fps and it's a fair assumption to say it was vsynched. So technically we have no idea what the actual framerate of the 980 is uncapped, could be 70, could be 80.... could just be 62 who knows >_>

i have a gtx 970 too, and i thought the same, DAI runs 1080p ultra, 60fps or more no problems, but i tested the witcher 2 1080p ubersampling, ultra and for moments it stutters and freezes like hell, i can't believe it

Appreciate the clear up!!!

However, I will have to disagree with your friend. I have an Asus Swift 2k G-Sync Monitor, Also, I have 2 970's in Sli, and ran a single 970 for 4 mths prior. Never a single issue, except when I pushed 4k gaming(which these cards are not made for IMO) Digital foundry found the same as I, possible your buddy just had a bad card or???

Witcher 2 stuttered and crashed on my 660ti too and I have an I5 3570k which is no small mouse of a cpu. I think a lot has to do with that ubersampling crap. I may turn that off if it's in this game and probably lower the msaa as that eats up a lot of fps. I am confident I'll run it and run it well but I may need to play a bit with the settings and it may also be that an nvidia driver update or two may make things smoother. At least that's what I am hoping...

again weird I had a single 660 ti, Then 2, then tri-sli, ran very smooth for me on 1080p I never ran Ubersampling though, except in a few rare cases to benchmark.

I had ctd's with it until I turned ubersampling off and that seemed to do the trick. I dunno *throws hands in air* cause I played newer games after that that were graphically better than Witcher 2 and never had an issue until DAI"s stutteryness convinced me it was time to upgrade.
