Is there a difference between the two controllers? The 'xbox elite series 2' and 'wireless'? i use my controller with a wire on my xbox series s, so will any one of those controllers do or does it have to be specific?

Yeah, there is a difference

Both the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and the regular Xbox Wireless Controller (Series X/S) will work perfectly fine on your Series S especially if you’re using a wire. No compatibility issues at all.

The difference is features and build, not “will it work or not”.

What actually changes:

Elite Series 2 (premium controller):

  • Back paddles (huge for shooters or competitive play)
  • Adjustable thumbstick tension
  • Trigger stops (faster shooting)
  • Custom profiles + button remapping
  • Better grip and heavier, more “premium” feel
  • Comes with swappable parts

This is built for people who care about performance or want an advantage.

Regular Xbox Wireless Controller:

  • Standard controller that comes with the console
  • No paddles, no customization
  • Lighter, simpler, just plug and play

What matters for YOU (this is the honest part)

As you said you’re using it wired on a Series S:

  • There is zero difference in compatibility
  • There is almost no difference in basic gameplay experience

So don’t overthink it.
