Well, first, the popularity of The Witcher series books should reach a popularity of GOT, in order for HBO even to consider it. In order for this to happen, western publishers should be interested in publishing these books in the first place, and they weren't so far. So as I see it, right now there is not enough interest in NA and GB even to translate and publish the books.

Second, I do not believe that TW3 will turn out a profitable super-hit like Skyrim because by some weird reason on many forums people now tent more to bitch about games, then to praise them, and even very good games suffer bad sales. But even if TW3 is successful, it is still only gamers who can be potential viewers.

Third, the movie and TV show made in Poland were a bit of a disaster, and HBO wouldn't gamble on a very uncertain success.

Well, you can always hope, sure.

Yep there are quite a few examples of movies from videogames and the most of them are...... crap (to say the least). Seems that if you want to destroy something's reputation, then give it to Holliwood.

Regarding the book saga: The Witcher saga is barely available in English, and until it won't be fully translated and will reach an acceptable sells\audience I am afraid HBO might have zero interest in it. Just guessing of course...

Let's be honest: if it were not for the videogames, the half of us wouldn't know a word of Sapkowski. And we are mostly addicted to those videogames.

I don't know how to feel about tv series based on my favorite books, directed by someone that never read them, because that is exactly what would happen. And even if they would read them, i doubt they chose anything other than english translations that are not very good. All that colorful wordings, all that magic of the witcher books are lost, it is very hard to take all that atmosphere from one medium to another without knowledge of the original. That's why i said i would rather see cdpr doing it. They know and understand original material from the first hand.

No HBO please. Cable and DRM obsessed company won't serve the Witcher series any good. When we'll see HBO selling DRM free content on the Web (in a timely manner), then you can propose them as an option.

Regarding the idea to create films - I don't really mind someone creating a full featured film or even series. The fact that the first attempt failed doesn't mean that others can't do better.

If anyone would be making it, engaging CDPR would make a lot of sense indeed. The same way Peter Jackson very wisely chose John Howe and Alan Lee to be the concept artists for The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit.

The Witcher isn't popular in the US. Let's be honest, besides the people who have played the games, I doubt there are many people who have even heard of the Witcher.

Also as long as Game of Thrones is on the air (which will probably be another 5+ years), then I doubt HBO would make another show that's has a similar genre to GoT.

The only hope anyone who wants a live action Witcher would be movies. Personally, I think games are a better medium. Also, while TW games are quite popular in Internetland, the average gamer probably has never heard of them.

Why a movie while you can have a game, which is basically like a movie but better? ;)

I for one wouldn't mind a Witcher series!

Though I doubt that HBO would be right for the job. I'd prefer if the Witcher adopted a Band of Brothers model: Create few but incredibly high quality episodes. Having it span over 5 seasons with 100 episodes seems a bit too much. You'd be milking it by then. It's hard to stay fresh at that point. Better stop while you're ahead.

Well anyway, if HBO decided to make a Witcher television series, I guess I'd watch it. Not a fan of Game of Thrones and their other melodramas so I don't know. I'd at least give it a chance.

Why? So HBO can simplify and completely spit on yet ANOTHER series of good books?

There is only person I'd trust with something as intricate as the witcher books and that's: Gao Xixi who made the Three Kingdoms TV show.

Poland should do it nobody cares about The Witcher in HBO.

I'm sure there are a lot of talented directors and shit there and everybody in that country knows the source material so they can't fuck shit up. All they need is a bigger budget and better people.

I actually want an animation instead or CGI movie with the CDPR guys doing the assets.

I would sign that, my boyfriend was almost drooling when he saw the EE intro.
He wanted to see a rendered movie like that the second he saw the ice shattering.

I agree, animation sounds like a good idea. They should make it very visually appealing, which does not equal lots of special effects. Just good art. And please, good, professional voice actors and writers.

I suppose a good start would be animating the short stories in The Last Wish and the Sword of Destiny.

However, as usual, there is no point in repeating and "adapting" if there isn't something new or creative to offer. For example, an artistic blend of elaborate visuals and music that convey the subtleties of the prose in these stories, and that enhance certain minute reactions the average viewer might miss, like the ambiguity of Geralt's smiles.

CGI movie on the level of that Letho trailer would be insanely expensive. Maybe a Polish produced live action movie in a few years, when the timing is right. I'd hate for The Witcher to get lumped in with GOT.

+1 on that. But just remember, no one cared about ASOIAF on HBO before Game of Thrones came out.

I would too root for an animated movies/tv series with that brilliant CGI like the intro. But that would be shit expensive though, simpler shows cost millions in production. But if someday this actually gets pulled off, I'd die a happy man.

My first thought when I saw this thread was it should be animated so they could keep the game's voice actors.

Sure, one condition. Anime made in Japan and not by Cartoon Network.

The problem is that all of these series are bad.
And The Witcher especially, has a huge respect by fans and the games are higher standard than anything else HBO has done so far.
So please, no TV series if it'll be just pooped out just to have a TV series.

I vote for Polish production as well. It needs to be high quality though, hope they have the budget. But we need to push Europes Film industry. And they should be able to do a better job at the athmosphere andm ake it less americanized.
