The Witcher short film/TV series

I think this could be a great series. Having such good source material, a high-budget series by a network like AMC could use this to compete with HBO's Game of Thrones. What are your thoughts?

Also, who do you think could portray a great Geralt of Rivia? Thanks :p

The problem is that The Witcher series isn't as big in US as ASOIAF. I mean, if it takes fan effort to just translate the books I don't see a lot of money thrown at a TV-series.

The franchise is next to unknown outside Eastern/Central Europe and Russia. Never gonna happen.

A comic is probably enough. A cartoonish/anime style would ruin it for me personally.

As for a TV series, well, as others have pointed out, I doubt it's gonna happen.

I think that the release of the third game will really help its popularity.

Just accept it. The Witcher is not mainstream material. And if it were to become one it would probably be stripped of its defining elements, completely ruining it for us in order to make it more palatable for the masses.

Not to sound elitist, this is just how it is. Like trying to make science and math college jokes appealing for mainstream audiences, it would result in something wretched like... The Big Bang Theory!

Who knows, if TW3 will prove a huge success not only in Europe, it would be possible.

EDIT: right know, im really looking forward to the dark horse comic

TW2 was a "huge success" compared to TW1, and it still sold only a fraction of what games like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 achieved.

If CDPR wanted to sell in the TES numbers, they would have to make a more digestible game. And I don't think we want that.

I'd prefer some sane publisher. No HBO please - they are too distribution control / DRM obsessed. If CDPR will get into film making, let the lead the DRM-free distribution there.

Well in my area, everyone is really hyped out for the game more than any other next gen title that is more "digestable". When there is for example a news article about TW3 on a local gaming web in my country there are always tons of comments and feeds.
I think the issue is that the game is not that much known outside Europe.
But that might change with TW3 going open world and on next gen consoles and being a much more known game since TW2 in general.

That wouldn't be enough though, as TES and Battlefield are established and known games series over the past years. CDP Red and the Witcher aren't that famous yet, but I'd think that when Witcher 3 and CP2077 comes out, they will be better known and have reached more people without turning into a money making driven company (which I hope that won't happen) like some other companies.

Well, only insane publisher would be ready to invest enough money to make proper fantasy TV series, but I would say that TW doesn't have even small chances for TV series or movie. It doesn't have that many crazy plot twist as Game of Thrones for example or even action sequences. It wouldn't be a good TV series for masses.

But off-topic I would say that HBO GO (their online distribution method) is pretty swell service. It's not DRM-free, but no publisher would invest Gazzylion of dollars and would agree for DRM-free distribution.

Eeeeh, not sure I like the idea. A new TV series would be nice though.

We already discussed that using DRM has no positive bearing on users or preventing piracy, this includes video. The fact that video industry is the most plagued by DRM can be viewed as a sign of insanity of the video publishers. It's dominated by the most brain dead legacy executives. So if CDPR will ever get to film making, let them bring something refreshing there, since being DRM-free is their core value.

Actually Michal Zebrowski wasn't so bad in there, but the series in general weren't good. The idea itself isn't bad, it's execution that can be bad. The fact that previous series failed, doesn't mean that any other ones would. It depends on director, script writers, actors, coordination with the lore and so on. I'm sure CDPR could do a good job with these. If nothing else, they can do animated series ;)

A mature Witcher cartoon series done in the same vein as Spawn the Animated Series could work. At least I think so. Or you could always go the Batman The Animated Series route. A bit of humour, not taking yourself so seriously yet still have incredible depth and some really well written episodes. An anime could definitely work as well.

I support this idea. It'll never happen but hey. Showing interest is the first step in making something happen right. No matter how impossible or implausible.

CGI based animation (imagine a whole Witcher movie in the style of in-games cut-scenes or CDPR trailers) would also be interesting.

I'll be happy with the comic. A premium show would probably too much talking for the masses to enjoy.

I second this opinion. And all other comment on maturity of TW franchise. It will not cut it for the mainstream.

Come on mate, you won`t want to compare TW to Spawn or Batman ;O. We all know TW is not suppoe to be for teens, because of the mature content

Well, then they should have to get rich enough to be able to invest 60 millions dollar per season. Because no big studio would agree to fund DRM free series ;). So this way it's completely impossible.
