The wolf pack (geralt companions in combat)

:hmm: hmm. as far as we know from the trailers (especially killing monsters). could it be geralt have a few companions while in combat gameplay that not restricted to missions and scenarios (maybe like in skyrim or dragon's dogma)? I mean, while in TW2, there are few battles in which geralt did have a companions for it but only in a few distinctive quests. so here are my thoughts about this elements:
1. I would love to see geralt hunting monsters with another witcher/witchers (exp: vesemir, lambert, eskel, ciri, etc.)
2. player get to choose companions for geralt while in main or side quests which could effects the outcome of the quests
3. different kind of companions could give a passive effect (positive and negative effects) for combat system and geralt stats(exp: dandelion that could boost morals(bleed & poison resistances), zoltan with armor boost, triss with magic and signs boost, etc).
4. as the story quests goes, we get a lot of companions which are based on the choice in previous quests
5. here are a lists for examples of geralt companions:
  • triss merigold
  • dandelion
  • zoltan
  • vesemir
  • eskel
  • lambert
  • ciri
  • roche
  • ioverth
  • yarpen
  • new character, alchemist based like regis maybe (from the novel character, very unique)
  • new character, ranged weapons based like milva (novel character)
  • new character, brute weapons based
  • new character, magic based

so what about you guys, any thoughts about this particular topic . . .
(sorry if my english is bad and for any spoiler in novel characters)

First I will react on point 1. NEVER. In the books, Geralt always hunts alone. Same as other witchers, if it was ever mentioned. Anything else is just...weird.
As for other situations - I would rather welcome a decent AI, not controlled by player in any way ( how can you even mention Skyrim companions as an example?!)
The reason is, every character is a personality, controlling them in any way would hurt the whole concept.

All I want is my companions to be useful in combat. Roche did absolutely nothing during fights.

He helped separate mobs but I agree, I don't think he (usually) killed anyone. Which is fine, I want the XP to go to Geralt. And I vaguely remember Triss hitting Geralt with a fireball occasionally...

Regarding staying true to the lore, I'd prefer them to keep it the way it was - the companions choose when and how much they'll assist Geralt, he doesn't ask them for help, but occasionally they show up anyway. AI controlled, not player.

Geralt had companions at different times in the books, after all, not usually at his request.

Of course I won't mind if Geralt meets his long time friends along the way during specific quests. Or meets them in a tavern for stories, rumours etc. Or Triss for some TLC

But it should be restricted to quest related stuff, dialogues mainly, or some stupid shit Dandelion usually gets into...in combat I hope Geralt stays alone, I don't really see a point in using a crippled companion AI or passive/active buffs just to tick a box.

well, of course what I mention about companions are definitely AI characters. I never said about controlling another character. what I suggest is player have a choice to choose his companions throughout a mission (or not choosing at all is fine too). Although is true in the novel, while hunting monsters, geralt never go with someone, I think a little bit of different in the games couldn't hurt right

that's right, while in TW2, in the beginning of chapter II with iorverth path, he is completely useless even blocking my movement during the fight. when he have a bow that supposed to be his primary weapon instead he used a sword . . .

In general, it couldn't, I guess... But it depends. Not long ago, someone from the team talked about how difficult is to create an rpg with a preset character, how constraining that is, how they always have to think carefully, if what they do, stays true to the known facts. So far they did a great job.
Actually, I read the books and fell in love ith them long time before any game came out. CDPR won me over instantly with how respectfully they worked with the subject. I could see some AAA western studio f*cking the franchise up, just because the differences in mentality. Luckily (and sadly at the same time), no one knew anything about these book in the west.
To the point - no matter how this will work, I trust them in their decisions, they did not dissappoint me so far, and as a true fan, I can be very critical. So, many of he topics discussed doesn't really bother me, I simply trust them in their choices cause they love the story as much as we do.

As already said, Geralt finds himself in all kinds of situations with friends, not only alone. In the books as well as the games. For some reason I think of Philippa Eilhart 'helping' Geralt with interrogation in Blood of Elves.
Regarding going hunting, well, I'd very much like to see Geralt and Eskil go giant-bumblebee hunting like mentioned in The Last Wish. ;)

Seriously, I hope to see Vesemir, Lambert, Eskil, Berengar(I don't care if it was a bug, I kept him alive), Roche, Iorveth, Saskia, Shani, and of course Dandelion, Zoltan and Triss again. The same with allies as with enemies, and that you have a chance to follow up on what happened to Letho, Dethmold, Henselt, Sile etc. depending on your choices in Witcher 1 and 2.

@caspartine VERY sadly I might add. I can understand that people who had the honour of growing up with Sapkowski's books were on the edge and afraid that CDPR wouldn't respect the books. But they did respect them, and then some. Thanks to the devs, maybe, but someone started the process of translating the books to English, though I lament that it took 20 years for that process to start. I'm grateful but I would have loved to read them in my teenage years. 'Western' doesn't automatically mean developing or playing AAA games btw. I've yet to play one myself, but I can understand. Who would want Geralt in a fantasy rail-shooter with a campaign ending after 20 minutes of gameplay? Not I. :welcome:

So I thank the devs we have gotten such great and meaningful games as Witcher 1 and 2, and soon Witcher 3. Love you devs!

Maybe another witcher or a sorceress but idk..
Between contracts and such he's usually accompanied by someone, mostly Dandelion but Geralt fights alone unless he partakes in a battle.
The only character I can see aiding Geralt is Vesemir as seen in the trailer, perhaps as part of the tutorial you help him with a contract or spar with him.

Consider yourself lucky... Triss killed me a couple of times on my Dark Mode runs... She's more deadly to Geralt than to the damn drowners.

Apart from that, I do not think having combat companions is a good idea, I would be nice to have some quests that would require them ( just cause) but hopefully they won't make you stuck or hit you with fireballs :p

I would appreciate some quests where Geralt meets friends and allies, but I would prefer that Geralt fights alone...the memory of Triss and her fireballs is still vivid in my mind :p

I'd like to see how Letho's been doing as I spared his ass in TW2

Hmm... Geralt usually fights alone, so I guess this isn't gonna happend. But I would like some quest similar to assault of Stygga castle (but more successful and with less dead allies :) ) where Geralt and his friends had to kill entire garrison.

Sadly the fight with Letho isn't a consequential event, I doubt there's going to be any obvious nods to Letho in TW3 either :/

I'll make your post as signature if he's actually in the game. It is a MAJOR point for Geralt, why do you think he was the final boss?

The final fight can't be saved afterwards, therefore you won't be able to import it into TW3.

Geralt won't see Letho ever again, dead or alive.

I'm pretty sure the final autosave includes your decision to save or kill Letho. As for whether or not he will return, no one knows, but the information of whether he is alive should be able to be imported and tracked.

As for companions, eh. That is Bioware's thing and they do it very well. I have no problem with the way friends or allies have shown up in TW games before, like Vincent Meis helping me out in the tavern fight, etc. Having characters show up at specific moments or fights is fine with me, even cool when it is done right. But having persistent companions that travel with me throughout the entire game, that doesn't really seem like a good fit for TW games.

Just to let you know, the wiki at that link isn't especially reliable. And yes, there's an autosave at the end, after the Letho decision.

People backed me because it is true. Get your facts straight Mr. Darkstar - a final boss is a climax!
