Tips for a gamer for Witcher 3 before the launch! SPOILER FREE!

Hello gamers!
I have been playing Witcher 3 for quite a while now (75 hours +)! The game is amazing!
I am here to give you guys a few tips before you get your hands on the game. Meanwhile you can go through my 100% Spoiler free review of the game here - http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/35956-In-depth-SPOILER-FREE-review-of-TW3-by-a-gamer

Lets start by talking about what NOT to do once to start playing the game!

1. Do not rush through the prologue area!

The prologue area has been designed to make both new and old players get accustomed to the lore and how the game works. Its really important to go a little slow and make sure you don't skip the most important parts.

2. Do not start looking for graphical 'downgrades'.

I am sure many of you wont. But for others, I would like to say that, Witcher 3 is one of the most beautiful games ever made! Downgrade or not, many few games come close to Witcher 3's graphical power!

3. Do NOT concentrate on killing as many enemies as possible to level up fast in the beginning itself.
To be honest, you CAN do so. But all the fighting and quick leveling up may overshadow other things you need to learn.

4. Do NOT skip through cut scenes and dialogue!
This is the most important thing to keep in mind! Witcher3 rides on your decisions. If you just skip the dialogues and don't think before making a choice, the consequence will come back and bite you in your arse.

5. Do not use fast travel often.
Fast travel might be a handy tool to save time. But if you keep travelling, you will discover wonders. Even if you are travelling through same routes you will discover new stuff. Like how your actions changes a village and its life over a period of time.

Now, Lets get down to what all you need to do to enjoy the game to its fullest!

1. Witcher 3 is one of the greatest games because it caters the need of almost every kind of player. If you are action oriented and just want to kill your way through the game, it will still be fun. If you are someone who like to stop every now and then and immerse yourself in the game, its still great too!
But to experience the game to its fullest, you might want to take it a little slow. If you play at a slower place, looking around and exploring, the game will surprise you with many cool details which you might otherwise miss. One of the details just brought a tear down my cheek. I am not exaggerating!

2. Do as many side quests as possible!
Side quests are the best in Witcher 3! Its a good idea to take a break from the story every now and then embark on the beautifully written side quests. In fact you will have to do so to increase your level before you can advance in the main story. They are all level capped. Also don't rush through the side quests.

3. Take a break!
You should let Geralt take a break from all the monster slaying once in a while. Visit a tavern during the evenings and listen to the bards sing songs. Drink some rye and talk to a few strangers. Or play a game of gwent with the locals. Race your horse once in a while. Or just go to the shore or a cliff and watch the sun rise. Trust me, CDPR has put a lot of love in these details. You will definitely not be disappointed.

4. Play GWENT!
One problem with Gwent is that, you will probably wont like it in the first few games of yours. But I advise you to give it a little more try. It just gets addicting! Gwent is a game inside a game! You will probably end up playing a tournament later! Its worth your time.

5. Think before you leap.
Think very carefully about the decisions you make in the game. They have serious repercussions!

6. Play with headphones!
Witcher 3 has one of the best sound designs! A proper sound system will not only enhance your game play but will also help you discover new places while you roam around.

7. Talk to as many NPCs as you can!
Doing this will give you a lot of insights into their life and the lore. It just increases the immersion.

8. Visit the brothel once in a while.
;)

9. Walk around in the cities.
The cities in Witcher 3 are very detailed. Just walk through the streets and listen to the daily gossip. Or walk to a preacher surrounded with people. ( I really wanted to punch one of those guys)

10. Think about how you are leveling up Geralt.
Think before you assign ability points to certain skills. It will greatly affect your playing style. You can surely reassign the points later in the game, but you will lose all the ability points gained from the places of power. So be careful!

11. Craft Craft Craft!
You might get cool weapons throughout your play through, but the best gear is available only through crafting. Collect as many raw materials as possible! Make your Geralt the bad-ass he actually is!

12. Use Witcher sense often!
This will highlight all the available loot nearby. Also while in forest you will hear some cool sounds when the witcher sense is activated. :)
But while indoors, make sure that you don't move too much while the witcher sense is on. The camera makes life difficult.

13. Get a haircut!
:D

14. Enjoy the game and thank CDPR!
Really! I will soon send them a thank you letter. These guys have put a lot of love into their game! It shows! They deserve our appreciation!
If someone from CDPR is reading this, please know that you have a new fan! I sincerely thank you for making one of the best video games ever! Thank you for this experience! Loads of Love to you!

Gameplay Tips

1. Play on HARD imo.
Harder the difficulty, better the AI and double the fun!
Playing on medium makes the game easier than Witcher 2. Hard is the best suited level if you want a wholesome experience. A lot of strategies come into play in hard. You will need to prepare before every big boss fight. Also, the satisfaction is greater when you kill these big guys after all you go through to prepare for it.

2. While playing on harder difficulties, pay absolute caution!
If you are too lousy with the combat while fighting monster higher level than you, you can keep a grave ready for Geralt nearby. Having perfect timings and strikes will be the only way out to survive.

3. Health does not regenerate automatically in higher difficulty settings.
Make sure you carry enough food and meditate after every big encounter. You never know where those wretched wolves are lurking.

4. Armour type matters!
Heavier the armour, slower is Geralt. Makes a lot of difference in the higher difficulty settings. Choose wisely. If you are going for heavy, make sure you have proper skills to balance your combat.

5. Do not button smash! PRACTICE!
Get to know how Geralt moves. How your control affects the combat. Its very important. You need to be in total control of Geralt to beat your enemies.
NOTE - Geralt looks like the coolest bad-ass ever if controlled properly! Looks like a professional! Gives immense satisfaction once you master his controls!

6. Read the BESTIARY!!! Or die trying!
Make sure you read the bestiary and get to know your enemy before you fight them. Its absolutely necessary! You will learn this the hard way while battling the Noonwraith in prologue area!

7. Use Alchemy!
It will make you life easier!

NOTE 2 - DON'T BOTHER ABOUT THE ABOVE GAMEPLAY TIPS IF YOU ARE PLAYING ON EASY!

Thats all I have got to say folks! I hope you people enjoy the game as much as I do!
P.S. - I think Ciri is gorgeous! :)

Would you mind adding some advice for difficulty settings and level scaling?

I'm doubtful if to start on hard or in the maximum difficulty. I dont like to begin with the top one usually, but I'm scared of over leveling too many creatures like some reviewers have said that happens, and like TW2 simply became easier and easier.

I also read that the more you go up in difficulty, the more gear overweights your level in combat, so that could be helpful for me to remove gear if i meet some dudes that are too easy in the late game.

Should I go with patience and persevere to kill a monster 5 levels above me in hard for example? or that will make me level up too quickly with few battles or give OP gear?

Just general advices fro those subjects would put my main concerns at rest, I already naturally play the way you described in all your tips ;)

Thanks man! Thats some great pointers, definatly prepped me a little better. One question though because i plan on starting at the 3rd highest diffaculty out of the 4 and i heard that u need food and potion to regain life. im fine wiht that and i want to craft potions too, but is there a mailbox, bank, chest or stash to put your mats in if you become overburdened with materials? I hope there is cause I dont want to sell off stuff a bank or stash spot is a MUST in a game like this. Especially with crafting being the only way to get the best stuff you will need to stock pile mass amounts of mats and herbs. when i played WoW I would spend HOURS UPPON HOURS just farming and building up my professions....can u do the same in TW3? (i f'n hope so... :\ )

There is enough inventory for materials and potions. The inventory system considers the weight of every object you carry. You can increase your carrying capacity using the saddlebags for Roach. Since materials and potions have very very low weight, you wont be facing any trouble storing them. Also, you will end up using materials more than you collect. So dont worry. :)

Thanks for the tips! Man, I'm so hyped to play this already...

Funny you mention that the skill points aquired via places of power do disappear when reassigning, I remember Marcin saying otherwise in a tweet a few days ago.

Is alchemy required on hard difficulty? I've never really been a fan of it in the Witcher 2, always preferred signs and swords.

That's for sure, but I've never been one to really go around and scavenge ingredients for potions. If some of the basic ingredients are found easily or purchasable, I'll dabble in alchemy.

You can fight your way through just using your sword. Alchemy gives buffs and will make fights a little easier.

There are many many monsters in the world. Some are savage, some are neutral, you can be friends with some.... Some monsters are more commonly found than others.

Thanks once again for sharing your thoughts, ArRam! TW3 is my first game in the series. I'm really torn about which difficulty level to choose. I completed DA:I on nightmare difficulty, since you played that also, do you think I can beat TW3 on hard and eventually dark? I've been reading conflicting tales about how difficult the game is, some say that even normal is very challenging.
Do you know anything about this permadeath feature? That really sounds scary...I will not platinum this game it seems...

Once you have a recipe of a potion, u need not collect ingredients time and again. Once you make the potion for first u need ingredients. After than ur empty flasks are automatically refilled if u have alcohol.

I have never really tried playing the game on highest difficulty. DA:I's combat is totally different from TW3's. Witcher 3 easiest level also requires proper control of the character movements. You need to practice a lot before you can master combat in hard difficulty. Also different monsters require different combat strategy.
So I am not the best person to judge the difficulty level for you. But if you love challenge then start at hard. You can always change the difficulty seetings midway.

Could you get to a shrine (or next time you use one) and save game after getting point then reset points then use shrine to see if you get it back? :D Or would that be too difficult?

Thanks for the Tips and review.

Hmm I was debating with myself if I should play on medium or hard. I like to have some challenges but hope the game to be fair about it (I like smarter AI but I hate when I get the feeling the AI is cheating somehow).. If you are telling me that even on medium is too easy then I'll go with hard. Thanks for your insight.
