Tips on crafting and dismantling?

Has anyone fully understood the crafting system? Should we always dismantle all items to the lowest, basic form? Or is it possible to "lose worth" (*) when dismantling? What are the items most often needed in crafting recipies?

(*) I mean something like "dismantling" high quality wood to ashes, which seems like quite the loss?

Usually its not advisable to dismantle crafting components. Dismantling junk/weapons/armor is the way to go.

Dismantle swords, animal skins, weak armor parts and junk. Do not break down crafting components unless you absolutely have to.
