The Witcher franchise started out as a series of novels, so your statement that "movies based on videogames have quite the reputation of being failures" doesn't necessarily apply here.

Not necessarily, sure. It's a fair point considering this is somewhat exceptional occasion regarding the source material.
I'm a fan of the animated intros as well, but it's still pretty unheard of to have a feature length CGI-film with the target audience being adults.
