Trouble Registering The Witcher 2

On entering my CDprojektred username and password, I am met with the error message "Client found response content type of 'text/html', but expected 'text/xml'. The request failed with an empty response. I can't find any solution to this problem and it seems without registering I cannot update my game to a level at which mods are compatible.

I assume that this is from a retail version on disk?
The game doesn't need to be registered in order to update. Once you update, the problem will disappear.
Instructions are in this thread:

In addition to what dragonbird said you can update the game manually . Do note that patches need to be installed in order 3.0 (EE) , 3.1 , 3.2 , 3.3
http://thewitcher.com/support/ . If you`re already on the EE then the rest is the same .

If you referring to mods created with REDkit you`ll also need 3.4
http://redkit.cdprojektred.com/index.php?c=download

Alternatively you can download the backup copy from GOG with all patches already updated in the game
