Tryin' to manage this stuff ...

Hi everybody,

I've waited quite a while for REDkit because I had some nice landscape ideas I wanted to try. Sadly this is my first time trying to work with modding tools and I'm got some problems which I'd like to ask help for.

1. I need a rough, high mountain-range with some possible high valleys for potential villages/ruins/castles/whatever. I watched the three-part tutorial by Klabautermann which helped a lot, but my mountains are more looking like hills, if you get my meaning. They're rounded, lack the massive base of true mountains and the ragged sharpness. Right now it's like this: View attachment 59

2. I'm not quite happy with my sea. I'd like some serious waves crashing against the cliffs and I tried to get that by using this tutorial: http://wiki.cdprojektred.com/redkit/Get+the+water+you+want

Sadly I just can't get my water to look like a high-going sea. You can get an impression in the mountain-picture.

3. How do I use the vegetation-tool effectively? I managed to to combine different vegetation in one "brush" but it looks very generic. Is there some way to add a "random feature" or smth like that?

Sorry for any mistakes, I'm no native speaker by any means. Still, any help is greatly appreciated.

So Long,

Jakob

PS. Is there a good tutorial how to build a castle or city or some such? Haven't managed to find anything and don't really dare to just try it. ;-)

1. Try using smaller brushes on some areas to make it "rough" looking. You should also try to make it appear like there was "erosion", so you should add some smaller rocks.
It is also important to make it appear like the mountain really "grew" over thousands of years, so you should add some bulges to it. If you want real steep cliffs, etc. you can also use meshes for your mountain.

I used a rock mesh for the top of this mountain:

2. Unfortunately there are no "waves" possible with Redkit. This is a feature that's going to be implemented in The Witcher 3 and most likely to the redkit of this game.

3. Don't use too "big" brushes, because every piece of vegetation will have the same distance from each other. And never use a brush for multiple pieces of vegetation. If you use smaller brushes, you can have a lot more direction. Most of the time (if I don't plant grass or backround trees) I use the gardening tool for full control.

Ps: You have to just try it. I don't think a tutorial can show you a "good" way of building towns and cities without you just copying it. It is a good idea to draw inspiration from paintings, pictures or music. I listened to the soundtrack of the first witcher game while building my town so I got into the right "mood".

Thanks for the fast reply, going to try those mountains some more I guess. Anyway, I forgot to mention one problem I encountered. When moving on my map it sometimes starts to look like this: View attachment 60

If I turn the camera or move away it vanishes and comes back without any real reason as far as I can see. Is this a known bug or did I do smth wrong?

About the city/castle-building, I didn't mean some kind of "how it should look like" but more some technical help. I'm kind of overthrown by the mass of castle/tower meshs and have no idea how I should combine them in any reasonable way.

EDIT: Btw., is it possible to work together in one world e.g. via LAN?

Just play the Witcher 2 on the easiest difficulty and take note of how the level designers have placed their meshes as a guide, and how they have put everything together in general. Use your imagination as well and see what you come up with.

Nobody knows what to do about the mentioned problem? It's almost impossible and certainly very annoying to have the water shining through (before I added the water it was simply white).

Well try to remove water, if it coursed by it, do some changes with water parameters. Can't tell you any thing specific.

It wasn't caused by the water. The moment after I created the world I had these "holes", only they were white until I did the water.

Well, what does "mess" mean? I made the world bigger than 512x512 and I got 3 or 4 Tiles, not sure right now. It was said in the tutorials the tiles increase the terrain detail. If this caused the problems - how large can the world be/how many tiles are usable?

Haven't read topic carefully. Did anybody told Elenath about using masks for terrain brushes to get quite realistic mountains?
