TW and books ( question )

So, i've started to play TW ( the first one ) and met Shani ( not sure if thats correct ). She said something like " I've heard you died in massacre in Rivia ". So im wondering, does TW start at the point where Witcher books ended ? Cuz well, it ended at massacre in Rivia.

In which book does the massacre of Rivia happen? I'm currently reading The Last Wish (the book with all the mini-stories). Does this book contain the massacre of Rivia?

The massacre at Rivia is in Pani Jeziora (Lady of the Lake), which is not available in English.

There's disagreement as to the dates. The end of the Second Nilfgaard War and the massacre at Rivia were 1268, by all sources except TW1, which gives "five years earlier" (it's now 1270, so 1265). Geralt returns in 1270. So he was dead about 1-1/2 years by the timeline of TW2, but 4-1/2 to 5 years by the timeline of TW1.

So TW2's events actually happen before TW1 ?

No, TW 2 is one month after TW 1.
However the explanation takes place in TW 2.

Seeing as not all things are 100% similar between the books and what CD Red decided some smaller matters differentiate themselves. This is of course since CD RED wanted to make their own story and while being inspired by the book create something anew and not just copy everything from the books.

The general story though is in a major way accurate so it doesn't feature that much of an impact between the games and the books... All in all, Geralt haven't been "dead" for that long (based on the information gathered about the games and also on the characters reactions on seeing Geralt in the game) so all happenings have been quite recent after the massacre of Rivia.

Basically:
Geralt is amnesiac throughout TW1, and starts remembering stuff in TW2, including what happened between Rivia and TW1.

@ Acial, and all who are new to the Witcher,

You should read at least the first two books officially translated into English, I'm assuming you are from an English speaking country, and then read the fan translation of the second short story compilation, "The Sword Of Destiny". Much of the characters and events in TW2 are much more meaningful if you've read "Sword Of Desiny".

The wonderful community fan translations can be found here: Community Fan Translations
