I can explain that video with ease, the dark knight wild hunt guy, its painfully obvious that in the E3 demo its a pre-rendered FMV, while in the retail game they ditched the FMV. The other actual in-game comparisons are largely just shader and lighting changes. Nothing a half competent modder couldn't bring back there. The only thing thats been obviously downgraded is geometry of certain things such as on some brickwork. CDPR really shouldn't of done that it looks terrible, or if they absolutely had to do it, use a higher resolution texture and parallax map it so it doesn't look completely awful. A solid argument could be made though that particles in the retail version have been hard capped because of consoles. Theres definitely more fog in the demo than in the retail side-by-side, but that could also just be because the weather was different (it looks like different weather). Either way, with the exception of the geometry argument and what CDPR should do instead of what is current in-game is invalid really.

That old UI looks infinitely better than the POS in the retail game though.

On a more engine specific side of things here is what I noticed, again all settings ultra \ max.

- Certain types of grass and tents pop in to view too close to the player, same goes for some terrain decals (I think their decals anyway). Ground decals especially are bad they pop in right on top of the player pretty much.

- Grass draw distance seems to have a oddly heavy impact on FPS when going beyond 1.5 - 1.65 regardless of grass density. Ideally I'd say for wonderful views draw distance needs to be 2.5 - 3.0 but something needs to be tweaked so the FPS hit isn't so heavy. (I lose about 15-20FPS going from 1.5 to 2.5)

- Water looks oddly low resolution and theres no difference between ultra or low quality, in fact low quality actually looks better than ultra to me. Probably because its not ridiculously over tessellated. The water itself still looks low res though. The water in Skyrim (with HD texture mods) looks far better than the water in Witcher 3.

- I've seen some god awful textures, not many, but a few, such as the brick texture used on the fireplace in various locations. If you going to skimp on geometry on areas like this the least you can do is use a higher resolution texture and parallax map it so it doesn't look like total arse. Some rock textures are also low res and blurry, as are some wood textures. For the record, I have all settings on ultra so its nothing to do with that.

Aright, thats all the worst offenders. Sorry CDPR, but for your third stab at a RPG type game you shouldn't be getting the basics like this wrong. I do understand some things are simply technical limitations on the engine based stuff but the other things certainly are not. Fix them and Witcher 3 will be epic, otherwise, the game to me is merely something thats pretty, but not overly functional in its mechanics which severely detract from what could otherwise be a fantastic game.

These Engine specific things you said can be fixed in only 2 ways.

First way have the developers apply a patch to fix them(not sure how).

Second way is wait till the mod tools are out so that modders can fix them (personally I prefer this way more because it will allow developers to focus on more important things)

Now I might have said "More Important Things" but that doesnt mean that something like a brick texture that's used on the fireplace is not important. I would say let the modders fix these things while leaving the very important ones to Developers.

Things that break immersion should be top priority, right under game breaking bugs. Optimization, Texture pop-ins, and low resolution textures that were obviously missed really take away from the game when you see them.

The teams that fix something like fireplace textures is an entirely different team than someone who would fix a quest bug.

Let me start by saying I love this game to death, 100 hours in, no end in sight and I'm absolutely loving it. But, there are a few things with the ui and game mechanics that can detract from the experience somewhat. This is a list of little tweaks and enhancements I'd like to see that would make the game better in my opinion.
I know many or probably all of these have been mentioned before, but squeaky wheel gets the grease. The more discussion, the more likely it is to become reality.

1. Storage - yes been mentioned a million times. I like to hold on to cool relics, beast trophies, lore books and witcher armor sets. A step farther would be a display area of some kind for armor and weapons or just beast trophies if nothing else.

2. Make the action log last more than .1 of a nanosecond... or make a button or menu option to open the action log and scroll through it - preferably with clear separators between combat and non-combat actions, simple color coding maybe.

3. Option to disable the auto sheathing of Geralt's sword when he exits combat OR dramatically increase the active combat range. More than once an enemy has run just out of combat range and then immediately turned around and ran straight back at me, wolves and nekkers do this a lot. But Geralt, being the world class intellect he is, immediately sheathed his sword and walked around with the dodging ability of a tree stump until I pull his sword back out. Let me choose when to sheathe his sword, I have a hotkey for a reason... And does the enemy really have to be within like 2 meters of Geralt before he thinks its a threat and pulls out his weapon? Make him able to track and dodge enemies at greater distance, especially archers which you can't effectively dodge until you're practically close enough to touch nipples.

4. An autoloot option would be nice. I usually pick up everything anyway unless I'm overburdened.

5. Let us track more than one quest at a time. I don't like to fast travel much so I tend to go to an area and take care of everything going on over there, this involves a tedious process of checking each journal entry and then looking where it is on the map to see if its' close by... just let me track multiple quests, I can see what they are on mouse over already anyway. This would also imply an additional tab in the quest log for tracked quests.

6. On the same note, provide some filtering or sorting of some kind for the completed quests, either alphabetical or most recently completed first. Currently it seems they are just dropped into the list at random making it a real pain sometimes, especially late game, to find and read the completed quest journal entry.

7. Journal entry updates should also get marked with a star, not just brand new ones. For example, many characters get a huge number of updates to their character journal entries as the game progresses and currently there is no indicator of updated characters, only new ones, who knows how many updates I've missed.

8. Indicate whether a book has been read or not on it's hover tooltip.

9. Let us read books from the merchant window so we aren't going through 10 different menus and dialogs to read the book and then 10 more to go back and sell it.
Or just give us storage so I can keep a library of lore books. Another nice thing would be to be able to equip items from the merchant window too for the same reason. I just want to equip the new thing and sell the old one, this shouldn't require so much menu traversal.

10. Alchemy and crafting tabs need to remember the collapsed/expanded state of different categories when switching screens. This is especially bothersome when I'm crafting something at a merchant and I am going back and forth between his shop to buy some minor ingredients and the crafting window and I have to scroll all the way back down to the thing I am working on, or re-collapse everything, every single time I leave the screen.

11. An option to sort by level required for armors and weapons crafting interface would also be good.

12. Some more inventory sorting options like number held, weight, value. Also, books and manuscripts need to have their own tab separate from the food, potion bomb ect. tab.

13 .Let us put potions or bombs in the pocket slots too. I don't need a torch or Kiera's freaking lamp in my quick access radial menu during combat, I need more bombs and potions easily accessible. If only I could put them in my pockets too. It's not providing so many more that it would be over powering, I'd still have to make meaningful choices about which bombs or potions I want there and they could just be used the same way current pocket items are used - select from menu, then press quick access button. Currently for me, pocket items are very rarely used except for maybe the torch and it's mostly just wasting spaces on my radial menu.

14. More subtitle options - I often like to play with subtitles disabled because I have a bad habit of reading ahead by accident and all the suspense of the scene is spoiled moments before it happens onscreen. But I also don't speak Elvish or Nilfgaardian, and Zoltan can be a real pain to understand sometimes especially on the busy, noisy streets of Novigrad. So an intermediate subtitle option would be nice. enabling subtitles only for other languages and perhaps some harder to understand characters, Zoltan for example.

15. ui toggle button - Despite the downgrade that everyone goes on about, I find this game quite gorgeous, especially certain scenes like a sunrise over a misty forest. A button to hide the ui for a nice screenshot would be excellent.

16. In horse combat, make the side Geralt aims for the side I am looking at. Stop trying to auto lock enemies because when there is multiple enemies Geralt will just keep switching back and forth making it near impossible to swing at the correct guy sometimes.

Well, there you have it. Just a few ideas I've had. Maybe a few people will get to read this before it gets buried in the massive deluge that is this thread.

Yup thats pretty much my thoughts too. Actual bugs and immersion breaking things at the top, then anything in and around the area of unbalanced or just downright odd gameplay (also detracts from immersion), then controls \ UI stuff, then everything else.

In case anyone is wondering why my posts so far are so specific, its because I am a game modder so these things I just instantly notice.

[Request] 1st Person View

It'd be great to have the ability to switch the camera between "Third Person" to "First Person", like Skyrim & GTA V.

REQUEST- Linear mainquest mission where the player plays through Ciri's narration of her prior experience in Tir na Lia with Eredin and Avallach. Just the part where she meets the Wild Hunt members, they explain who they are and what they are about, the king is murdered and Ciri flees. No need to see her going from world to world, just the part in Tir na Lia. This would greatly help with some of the complaints about the portrayal of the Wild Hint itself. Probably would fit best after Battle of Kaer Morhen but before going off to battle the Crones @ bald mountain. This is likely way to late to make the change, but it would be pretty cool to see.

The worst thing about Witcher 3.... & DLC Wonderings

For me by far the worst thing about Witcher 3 is because of one of the best things.

I get why none of the locations such as Bandit Camps, displaced townships, Monster nests re populate at the moment, because if they did we would all end up too high a level for the DLC and even if they didnt give you XP, the cash from loot would build up and you could buy everything from the DLC straight away.

But I feel sorry every time I visit a location, like a ruin etc thinking that from then on in the game its just going to be empty for ever. No need to go back there ever again.

The locations are so fantastic it just seems a shame that there cant be some kind of re population of those locations ( such as in Skryim, think it was every 30 days ) so there would be some reason to go back.

I would love it that if in one of the DLC, at the completion they could figure it so locations began to become populated again and did so again and again to make the world come to life again. Its such a rich world, just doesnt seem right it comes to a conclusion.

I wonder if this is planned maybe? It would be easy enough to do, when cleared just have a random amount of time before it was re spawned and at that time use the players current level, so in theory everything would all be various levels again.

Wishes/requests for a possible revised version of the base game:

  • a completely revised ending and rewritten epilogues with a proper engagement curve
  • extended and more fleshed out and revised videos in the epilogues including Dandelion, Zoltan, the lodge and other important characters
  • cut of the deus ex machina moment at the end or at least a heavy revision
  • more and better character interaction in the final stages of the game
  • complete revision of the Wild Hunt, make them characters instead of bad stereotypes from bad action movies
  • extended interaction between Triss and Geralt in case you romanced Triss in the late game
  • competely revised and extended interaction between Yennefer and Ciri
  • completely revised witch sabbath mission (best: cut Imlerith out)
  • extended Tir la Nia and Aen Elle interaction and scenes
  • completely revision of the choices leading to the ending

Wishes/suggestions for the upcoming expansions:

  • cut vanilla looting, please (!!!)
  • extend the Dandelion presence and make him the complement to Geralt he was in the book
  • more moral and factual choices and less psychological ones (with respective consequences if possible)
  • a proper engagement curve and pacing, please
  • more "party" missions with companions to interact with
  • upgradable, epic wolf armor, that looks like the promo armor of TW3

While testing some tweaks and settings I have niticed that Shadow cascade levels distance are calculated incorectly. Center from wich distance to switch to next cascade is shifted to the right from camera. To test it set MaxCascadeCount=2 in User.config under [Rendering]. This will disable two most distant shadow cascades. Then go into the game and turn around. You will notice that while you turn around objects that was infront of you in shadow when they will be to the left of you will be outside of the shadow zone.

So if there are all cascades active then objects to the left from the camera will cast les detailed shadow because they will use more distant shadow cascade.

Here are screens that illustrate this.

Here shadow reaches that little green bush

But as I turn camera shadow detract and dont even reach that little tree

Sand slope also loses shadows when it is in the left side of the screen.

mini map too invasive + extra content

Instead of the mini map. It's too distracting. Have some way of letting us know where to go without looking at the minimap or remembering directions. Such as the navigation bar in skyrim, and allow it to fade (0-100% etc.)

or at least let us put the minimap on the bottom right screen.

-This will be hard to do now but for the future title please make the movement more fluid. It's too mechanical. Combat especially feels static: Geralt swings fast then just stops abruptly, then back at it. Fighting moves should be a string of fluid movement, and should be more varied. AI can also be very dumb and needs work. Also, the decapitation is cool but it makes no sense sometimes like when I stab the guy and he splits in two. Look at God of War as a model. The combat should be the big focus.

The jump and climb animations are horrid. The horse constantly just stops when in full stride over little pebbles or something. Riding the horse feels staticky too.

Please, no black screen to cinematics when talking to npcs, just zoom in and change camera angle. Give dialogue option of exiting the conversation at any point. And let us hold a button to get to the point of the discussion, they are often too damn long.

There should be more interaction with the environment especially cause it looks so damn good. Animations for opening treasure chests, sharpening sword, crafting, drinking potions. Bandits, assassins hiding in the crowd, and monsters should be able to invade the towns and it's the Witcher's job to protect and eradicate the threat.

There should be a stealth system.

Let us see a larger preview of items in your inventory and please rework the entire inventory/UI system, it's a mess.

Or maybe a pc gamer could mod all this ? dangggg that would be sick.

Thank you !
Have an awesome day!

Please balance this game. The top difficulty is a major joke. Not only casuals play your game. The easiest difficulty my god must be able to be finished by 5 year olds at this point.

I am still waiting to do a full playthrough. This game is not finished much like every other open world RPG on release.

Suggestions for 1.06

I was waiting for the 1.05 patch to post my list of suggestions in hopes that some of these might be fixed. I think these small fixes should be high priority for the next patch to smooth out the few pain points in this otherwise outstanding game. Here they are, most of which I'm sure we can agree would polish things up:

  • Inventory: We need a bank or storage system to offload items into instead of carrying everything in the entire game 24/7.
  • Inventory: Add a method to sort by weight and another to sort by value.
  • Inventory: Add a separate page for notes/books and another page for crafted alchemy items (potions etc).
  • Map: A single filter option to remove all completed map objectives!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Crafting: Please for the love of god a sort or filter for unusable items (too high in level) or bad items (lower in damage or armor). Trying to find an upgrade in the crafting menu is annoying since it always lists 100+ items and there is zero sorting by damage, armor, or level!!!!
  • Crafting: Show number of sockets when viewing diagram.
  • AI: Often humans or monsters will stand there not moving toward you or will not attack.
  • AI: The leashing boundary is too strict. It should be based on distance from Geralt to the monster; not some invisible wall.
  • Looting: Allow looting by where camera is facing, not only where Geralt is facing.
  • Quests: Quests page should always open to the category of the current quest.
  • Quests: Completed quests needs sorting (why is it not sorted alphabetically or by level?), and some way to easily call up the last completed quest (a Recently Completed Quests section or a button to press when you complete a quest that opens the Quest page to that specific quest so you can read what Dandelion wrote)
  • UI: A single button or option to disable all UI elements (for taking screenshots). Or a new keyboard button that takes a screenshot without the UI.

I feel there are better things coming. I've never really put 90 hours into a single player game, and I'm still only about halfway done. The game has become easy even on Death March and I feel better balance will be achieved in the future. There are many quest breaking bugs, missable gwent cards, etc that are annoying. 1.05 broke a lot of stuff, but also fixed a lot of stuff.

Is anyone else waiting for a few more patches and then just going to restart?

Yes, I have not even started. I predicted this a long time ago. I will never play an Open World RPG after Skyrim again on release. Simply, Never again. And I did preorder this and I don't care. I just want to know if they are going to do something about balance. I will not play this game if it is just going to be ultra cheesy.

Thanks. Every time I complete a quest, I like to read what Dandelion wrote to see how he explained it. But without any sorting at all, trying to find the one quest among 50-100 Completed Quests is sometimes quite annoying. Yeah, these are all what I suspect very small fixes. Sorting the quest log by alphabetical order or quest level should be really, really easy.

What is wrong with the "Players" ?

Grettings and good Evening everybody.

At first i have to say, my english grammar is not really good, maybe this Post will hurt your eyes...so im sorry if it does.
While reading through the Forum i really got some serious "WTF" moments, some Posts are so strange to me.
"Broken loot system, Quests have shitty rewards, MMO Fixes, No exp..." and so on. Is this "Mainstream players" related?
Sounds some kind of strange, yes, but i cant image how somebody feels not rewarded by helping a Woman in need if she only says "Thank you for saving me".
A brother was killed on the Battlefield...Geralt is going to serch for his body - What reward do you expect for such a Task? Apparently many of you expect a Super Ultra Sword or something!? Every action you do has to be greatly rewarded? Ah jeah, it is a game. How can a game not reward me for doing things...no rewards no fun?

My Main question is : How do you play the Witcher : Wild Hunt?

I played about ~40 hours and arrived at Novigrad. The World is so huge, so full of well written Quests (I would rather say Stories), the detail of every Character is absolutly great. I played many many RPG´s, but in my opinion Wild Hunt is outstanding in Atmosphere and Quest Design. If i would just run from place to place, Quest to Quest or Task to Task, for me the game wouldn´t be as half as interesting as if it is now. It feels sometimes a little bit like Pillars of Eternity : You have to read or think carefully before you should take your next step. The game doesn´t tell you what is "good" or what is "bad" ... Wild Hunt needs your attention and a bit of "Play with Brain"... Imho the game is not designed for "running through and doing quest by quest in a row"... because Wild Hunt rewards me absolutly not by giving me items or exp, the game rewards me with the decisions i made. As i said, the most Stories are so deeply interesting and detailed, i just want to know whats going on and what happens next because of my decisions... A new silver Sword or some Orens for some hard work is always nice, but doesn´t hit my attention. Searching for new recipes, crafting things is also interesting, you can´t craft the strongest Weapons and Armor at the beginning. Sometimes you need a sword to craft a better Version of the sword and so on... Balancing could be a bit better though, but imo it´s okay atm.

The greatest "WTF" moment for me was with two beggars defeating me in a Fist Fight. Geralt of Rivia defeated by two chronically undernourished beggars - only with their fists? I´m playing on the second hardest difficult level but c´mon... two beggars hitting Geralt four times and he goes down? That was funny, but very uncommon. Wild Hunt isn´t perfect, but i really recommend playing the game "the slow way". Take your time reading Books and Billboards...listen to the people everywhere...really think about doing your next step. You are Geralt of Rivia, a Monsterhunter - You can try to be as Neutral as possible or you can try to mess with everybody... But don´t try to be a rushing Witcher on his Quest to Quest the fastest way you can.

The game is no mainstream in my opinion... it seems like many of the poeple out there just don´t really understand what Wild Hunt is about. Don´t get me wrong, im not saying people are stupid or something...i just think the witcher is too slow for players who wants everthing too fast. It´s similar to Dragon Age : Origins... DA:O was absolutly great... Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition were just "oh no, wtf happened to the game"... really sad... but Dragon Age 2 or Inquisition are the better games then DA:O for many players out there. I´ll never understand it...but it is how it is...

I hope CDPR will never be a "Mainstream" Factory :)

Cheers
