Drinking potions and activating them later has been confirmed.

Marek Ziemak:
You will still have to drink potions before combat, but you will be able to activate their effects any time you want, as witchers can control their metabolism.

So Witcher can control their metabolism? How? I mean yeah, I can understand if they could slow down their metabolism through meditating (thus allowing their body to react to the potion in an optimal way relative to drinking it on the fly), but I would like to know how they can control their metabolism when they are up and about.

That is why a system where potions are better when consumed before a battle - with longer effect in time - but you could also pop them without meditation, given that there is time - but with less beneficial effects (including some less desirable passing side effecs)

I'm afraid there's no logical explanation for that.

As far as i know, controlling their metabolism is a consequence of them being mutants. A part of their mutation.

Thats why Witchers are mutants.

Im not sure has this ever been officially confirmed by anyone, but thats the only logical conclusion one can reach when taking all established character and setting facts into account.
