TW3 Weapon Designs

So I though it would be cool if we posted here images of cool swords and other weapons to inspire the artists a bit, who knows maybe one or two might even make it into the game.
I really liked the swords Geralt uses in the vgx trailer, and it makes glad to see that they are drawing inspiration from historical weapons, because in my opinion the coolest swords are the ones you see in museums made by artists for members of the nobility.
And I personally have a request for the reds, in dark souls there was an armor set that was a very close imitation an armor set owned by henry VIII, so I thought it would be really cool if you guys could have one sword in the game that is an exact copy of a historical sword, maybe from a museum in Poland.

So here are a few I found today

PS: If there's already a thread dedicated to this I'm sorry, I couldn't find it.

I thought Stennis' sword looked cool:

For some reason it reminded me of Madmartigan's sword in Willow:

Not so similar perhaps, but still, it got me thinking of it, and I love that movie.

I'm actually quite impressed by the work of the designers in both games. Keep up the good work devs!

I love sword desings in TW2. They all look pretty realistic(for fantasy game) and they are still different and original. Also I remember that most wild desing was dancer(btw will probably be imported to TW3...oh yeah!) and it was very cool and still quite normal desing. I think CDPR will do awesome job about TW3 sword desings.

Just a little offtopic. Only thing that I didn´t like about swords in Witcher 2 was that they were...well...just loot(I mean there were too many swords for such small game). In The Witcher 1 they had stories(like first silver sword) and special ways how to obtain them and their smaller number made the good ones so special. So I would like to see many common swords, some better pieces and then few unique awesome swords with some hard and long ways how to obtain them or even backstories behind these swords(creation, previous owners).

I totally agree with you. Less unique and special sword wich are difficult to find or craft and for each one add a story or something.

Dance was one of the coolest swords I've seen in games! But I agree with you @broccolisoup, it was just loot, the stats weren't good enough for you to use, at the end of the game you were left with a choice of 3 swords. But I think the solution is exactly the opposite, they should have a few generic swords that you buy and easily craft for the beginning of the game but have something like 10 swords(perhaps 5 steel and 5 silver) that are special that you'd have to find or loot from a special enemy, and they would be upgradable to have very close stats but different pros and cons to each, so each player could feel HE chose his sword and not the game chose the sword for him.

now that's a thought that i reaaaally like. it would be so awesome. the absolute master choosing between the masterpieces. trying out the weight, the edge, the hardness, the grip.
sounds really cool

What about that chain thing Geralt has. I still want to wrap it around monster limbs, hold and climb it with left hand and hack the damn limb(s) off with the silver in right hand. But only if it looks cool.. I wonder if CDPR could really pull this kinda idea off? It would be so awesome.. and way more realistic than Dragon's Dogma IMO.

I don't understand your point of view at all. Are you saying you want less swords? Or less unique swords? That doesn't make sense to me. I want more. Maybe you can explain your reasoning behind it a little better. I'll explain mine:

1st of all, I think the thing to avoid is saturating the game with customization items (swords, armor, etc.) that are quickly obsolete or overshadowed by another item that you already have. For example: let's say that you have a sword that does 30 attack damage. Imagine if 90% of the swords that you find in the game have say like 10-20 damage. If that's the case, you're never going to even pick them up or use them, except perhaps to sell. Not that it would be horrible if this is how it's done, but if it is then those weapons are kind of like wasted space.

The way I think that you can have many swords, armors, etc, is that you basically have different tier levels of these items. Tier 2 weapons/armor are better than tier 1 weapons/armor. Tier 3 weapons/armor are better than tier 2 weapons/armor, etc. But every item in the same tier is similar in overall power but different in other ways.

For example, maybe one sword will do slightly more damage, but another sword in the same tier will offer more vigor or a chance to poison the enemy. Likewise with armor: One armor might have better defense, where as another armor will have better vigor regeneration. Or perhaps 1 armor will have better resistance to poison, compared to a similar armor which has better resistance to incineration, etc.

Not to mention, each sword and armor looks different.

So if you have many different items to choose from, that offers more choice to the player and that allows players to carve out more of their own personal style or way they want to play the game. It makes more of a unique experience for each individual player.

In my opinion, it's not as good an idea if every player uses the same swords and wears the same set of armors as they progress through the game. I think the only difficult part in this system would be figuring out how to distribute the weapons/armor so that the player is getting mostly tier 1 weapons, and then getting mostly tier two weapons, then mostly tier 3, etc. It was easier to do in TW2, I think, because you could separate the tiers by chapters. But anyway, I hope my post makes sense. It's kind of long, but basically in my opinion: more options = better

Apart from Aerondight, the swords in the Witcher 1 are just loot. Mahakaman Rune Sihil and the Moonblade are a reward for a tricky quest, one of collecting teeth and the other for monster heads. Nothing special apart from their damage. The same goes for the Steel swords (with the exception of Harvall), be they meteorite of purchasable straight from the Blacksmith.

Many of the swords in the Witcher 2 however, do have a story, though subtle and in the case of many of the silver swords ending in the death of a witcher. The Dark Mdoe items are a special treat wince we keep a cool tale about its wielder rather than connecting the dots. I like to feel like Bilbo plucking Sting from the troll lair when I grab Deithwen from the Archas nest.

In any case I am in agreement with Master Villent.

And I would be happy with maybe changing weapons and armor once. Though I understand, that it would have worked better in TW1 and 2 and in the open world people expect more...

Do you see? You remeber their names and how to obtain them and you would probably recognize them. So you almost proved my point.

Anyway the thing is there are so many swords in TW 2 that game literally throws swords at you. There are altogether more than 90 swords and game is long about 40 hours. Even if you get less than half of them it is still one sword per one hour of gameplay. And I remeber just one from first act that was obtainable by getting Endrega teeth and dancer because it was best sword in game and had cool desing. And other mentionable are getting lost for me in numerous amounts of other swords.

The backstory of sword doesn´t have to be story itself. Just the fact you have to do something to get the sword and then you use the sword for significant part of the game makes it important enough. In TW1 might have been too low amount of good swords but they all had unique desing and were pretty memorable. And I liked it.

In conclusion I would like to see "getting new sword" as more uncommon situation. I would say that keeping amount of swords that were in TW2(and adding some common crappy types in each tear) in big game like TW3 would be totally ok. Also lower amount of important swords gives creators of game more space to play with ways how to obtain them.

Only thing is that player should be able to be creative in utilizing his character in way of fight. So not too low amount.

Last thing I would like to say that many people like to get a lot of loot in rpgs and they are all in for "more items=more fun". I honestly think that less is more. Just my opinion,

So 87 awesome swords and about 25 armor sets designs that we are forced to throw away because of their low stats, I can't be the only one who thinks this is absurd, if we could upgrade the final 30 swords and 10 armor pieces to be almost equal in at least damage and defence, we would be free to chose our gear based on looks and special abilities.

I also remember the names of the swords in the Witcher 2 and how to obtain them :p

And I would hardly call collecting monster teeth and trophies from each chapter a memerable quest. Its more of a meta achievement for the player, much like Dark Mode gear.

I don't want to have to do an Aerondight equivalent sword quest for a few different sword possibility of unique swords--maybe 1 is ok if there is an extremely good reason.

I think in this stage of Geralt's life he is past running around doing quests for legendary swords. All he wants is a sharp edge.

Furthermore, Aerondight was a symbol, a device used by both the developers and the Lady of the Lake to speak about the phenomenon in the Witcher universe known as destiny and how and if it would affect Geralt. The sword itself was a cool bonus--especially for those who missed out on the Moonblade quest. It was by no means some quest just to get an epic sword.

I agree with previous post. Ialso dont want to see how my weapons ,with such cool back story and my hard work getting them turn to ordinary junk like my import swords in Witcher 2. The Witcher swords itself is a great weapon .and Geralt would never exchnge them for some cheap Temerian or other swords - just mighty artifacts or he did reforge them in something even more powerfull. But about design of the sword and equipment - its just adorable now. What i like even more -they are history correct(like Oakeshot) terminology.but still such beautifull . But in all Witcher chapters i got one thing - silver sword blade ,guard and scabbard has no runes and sigils as described in every book.

Reminds me of D'yaebl: . Loved how my Mahakaman rune sihil and D'yaebl was carried over from Witcher 1 to 2. Too bad they were...well...not as good in comparison to how they were in 1, but I think I understand why, and I'm grateful for the devs outstanding work of bringing weapons over from 1. Wonder what we'll get carried over from our Witcher 2 playthroughs. Would be very glad if CDPR continued the tradition from 1. Please devs, make it so.

The "poster" swords of the Wild Hunt are Virgin and Black Unicorn, Dark Mode swords from Chapter 2. Unless someone can confirm otherwise I pretty sure Geralt is wearing the complete Oathbreaker's set.
