It's a very interesting topic.
Why? Because people are divided clearly into 2 groups - those who like more swords and those who like less. I'm with the 2nd group.

You are right.
1) There were basically no choice with swords. In all Chapters after a couple of playthroughs you know exactly what sword diagrams to buy or what quests to make in order to have the best swords as early as you can do it. I'm now like: "OK, so it's 1 Ch. I need 15 endrega's teeths..."
2) And no one of them has a story like Aerondight in W1. The part when Lady makes Geralt her knight still makes me feel special after 10th playthrough. The only one in W2 with a story (sort of) was sword in gargoyle's chamber from the elf (Addan Deit). I love this part when Geralt starts reciting elf's story, so eerie-sounding. But that's it. As for Deithwen - you can get 2 of them, actually. In 3 Chapter swords fall in Geralt's hands. Suddenly he get many of them.
3) Oh, you can get operator' s staff ;)

I don't understand your point of view at all. Are you saying you want less swords? Or less unique swords? That doesn't make sense to me. I want more.

So if you have many different items to choose from, that offers more choice to the player and that allows players to carve out more of their own personal style or way they want to play the game. It makes more of a unique experience for each individual player.
Let's think about Skyrim (because everyone knows this game). You can become a smith and make your own swords. You can loot enemies. And so on. There are tons of swords in this game. But still many people cherish Sanquine's Rose or Mace of Molag Bal because you have a quest about obtaining them and Daedra Princes personally give them to you. And don't forget about Dragon Priest Dagger - there are only few of them and they are unique. I used console to get it because I just couldn't find them naturally.

About stats. Maybe it's me, but in every game I play I quickly become bored with comparing swords stats and choose them based on their looks or find the one I like most and use it for the rest of the game. It's only numbers: this one is 11-15 and that one is 12-14, which one to choose? I will choose the one that gives my hero the most cool look.

Apart from Aerondight, the swords in the Witcher 1 are just loot. Mahakaman Rune Sihil and the Moonblade are a reward for a tricky quest, one of collecting teeth and the other for monster heads.

Nooo...

I still remember first time I played W1. I was trying to find Tower in the swamps, and it's a tricky even for the second time. I stumbled upon vivern's lair and after near-death experience... Harvall! It's still one of my favorite swords in all games I've played.

They MUST!

The one that I think MUST go into TW3 is Caerme. It had the intriguing back-story, but appeared too late in TW2 to be really useful.
And yes, too many swords in TW2. You only actually upgraded once, twice at the most, in each chapter, and yes, you found the ones you liked and stuck with them.

If any one sword is to be imported, I would opt for
the sword of Aramil, who fled the Wild Hunt:
Addan Deith.

Yeah, I love the scene and dialog that plays when you pick up this sword. It is pretty sweet.

Regarding sword design, I really liked the swords in TW2. My only gripe is that the hilts are pretty large. I wouldn't mind seeing the hilt size reduced by about 10%. It always looks a little silly to me when Geralt is in a cinematic and he has 2 gigantic sword hilts looming over his shoulder.

I wonder if every sword will have different scabbards and how Geralt armor will be split on components - like in Witcher 2 or like in Kingdom Come deliverance where we can choose everything -under garments, torso armor, spaulders, greaves, leggins, chauses, bracers, gauntlets and gloves and other stuff ?

Same here, but I cant shake the feeling that I'm using a weaker sword just for the hell of it, and to me that really diminishes the experience, but I'm not saying we should have lots and lots of useless swords, what I'm saying is that think we shouldn't have to make that sacrifice, if you like a sword design you should just be able upgrade it until it's max dmg lvl, so we would have less swords(not too few though) and the majority would be useful, after all, damage alone is such a boring stat, if they made the majority of swords upgradable to have the same max dmg they would be free to make each sword unique in other ways, like special abilities and perks(which imo are way better than boring damage levels). So never again we would have to go through that old RPG situation" Ooh just found an awesome sword!! omg it looks so cool!! It has a freaking griffin's claw on the hilt !!Oh wait mine is stronger -cries and throws new sword away-

Different scabbards would be a really nice touch, the VGX trailer made me wonder if they'd put that in as well.Regarding armor I think it will be more like TW2 but I have to admit that I would really like to see them going for a more deep system like Kingdom Come

Frankly I very much dislike how the weapons were implemented in Skyrim. I mean, by the time I stumble upon some named "special" piece of equipment, I already have a weapon that far surpasses it in every way. I found no reason for using Dawnbreader or Axe of Whiterun or whatever, as it would be suboptimal and effectively a handicap. Especially since the story behind any such piece of equipment didn't have any relevance to my character nor to the world.

That left me with common, randomly generated pieces of ebony or daedric maces and armors. Which you can easily obtain before completing the first half of the game, and spend the other half with the same equipment.

Gwalchica (I think it was spelled that way) was my fav. looking sword in TW2. I'd also like to see TW1 style silver swords in TW3.

I'd personally like to see a few arming swords and perhaps a few Polish sabres, as a little nod to the famous swordwork of the Hussar's and others.

True, there is that situation, but I remember the freedom you were given as a blacksmith in Skyrim. If we have that you might work that 'cool sword' you just found instead of throwing it away. But it will still be that very same situation(you finding another cool sword but your own is better) and we have a catch 22 on our hands(or more like the never ending story). Because you will probably shape that sword and mend and go to extremes. I ended up, by quite clever means I might add, with two ebony swords doing tremendous amounts of damage in Skyrim. Sure, daedric swords had done more damage had I worked them instead, but I never cared much the thought of wielding swords from hell. ;) Well, the result were swords that not many creatures could take more than a couple of strikes from before going down. Not even the strongest of them all. He fell like nothing. Not that I complain but...when you have the freedom to work a tool doing the same damage as a weapon...
Okay, so I know that many tools have also been used as weapons in history, such as lamia or sickle. But with that freedom it felt more like creating a flamberge from a wooden knife. The fun wore off quite fast with weapons too powerful. The process of creating them was fun though.

I think I rather accept what CDPR did with swords in Witcher 1 and 2, and that they have given values. Sure, you always use the sword that suits you best regarding damage or some other aesthetic quality, true or not. In Skyrim I actually chose a 'lesser' sword(ebony) in favour for my own personal preferences(because I think ebony weapons look cooler than daedric). But then again, I never found any cooler weapon than those so I guess it's not an never ending story after all. Oh well.

I say yes to different and cool scabbards though(and the option of carrying swords on Geralt's back or at his side), but regarding armour and swords I have faith in the devs.

I believe you mean G'valchir which is the same as Mahakaman rune sihil. One of my favourites too.

@Blothulfur
Hey friend! What took you so long? The thread is about swords for crying out loud! ;) I know you to be a weapon/history buff so I just await whatever images you can dig up.

I've installed a mod that lets me buy all the items from any bartender, so that's where I've gotten it. I'm pretty sure it was cut out of the official version of the game, but was still left in the DB (not sure though). So I'm glad I've installed that mod since I probably would've never found my favorite looking sword in the game. ;) Apparently its name is the name of an ancestor of Ciri.

"Gval'cha means "falconess" - it's actually a name in modern human languages, the name Falka.

Mass-murdering rebel, burned on a stake and Ciri's ancestor. Ciri actually used the name Falka as an alias, when she was pillaging South with the Rats."

Well it wasn't Gwalchica at least. ;) Don't remember that sword. At all. I honestly thought you meant a steel sword, either G'valchir, Gwalhir, or possibly Gwyhyr. Oh well.

The silver sword looks a lot like Aerondight, I kept that for a long time in Witcher 2 before switching. Loved the story behind it from Witcher 1.

@Bellator Pius Gratus Yes but skyrim had that same problem, at the end of the day the daedric set was still the strongest. and every player that wanted to get his character to 100% was forced to use it.

Yeah, I understand what you say. Clearly the 100% is understandable, but still I went with the weapons I wanted in Skyrim. In Witcher 2 as well for that matter. I even completed every set of cursed armour/swords then completely discarded the blades in favour of 'lesser' blades, simply because I really(really) hated the blurred vision and sound whenever Geralt drew the blades.

So, my own personal preference. That's the % that counts the most to me. Considering what I did with my ebony swords in Skyrim, their damage were beyond any damage the daedric did. Well...unless I did the same unique and time consuming process with the daedric swords. Even improved daedric swords weren't close, because I really invested time and resources in improving the ebony set. I think it's about what counts the most to you, damage or aesthetics or feeling or whatever.

What you asked for was a situation where you didn't need to throw away the cool swords you found. Skyrim let you improve upon weapon statistics. The witcher games does that also. There are temporary improvements like oils and whetstones/diamond dust, and permanent ones like runes. But that's not the issue really.

Possibly, the devs could let Geralt visit a blacksmith that can make your preferred sword equal to the best you are carrying. Maybe from a mold or design of your choice? It has been done before. Designs and molds have at least...but what I mean is a sword design of your choice takes the same qualities of another sword(you have but don't like the look of).

So, for instance I could choose Stennis' sword design(look) and apply it on a sword featuring...well any sword that has better stats, but it would still look like Stennis' sword.

The question is if we're allowed that kind of freedom in Witcher 3. And if we would appreciate all the possible choices and customisation.
Player choice and all( :victory:) but I choose to have faith in the devs. They are far more knowledgeable what works and what doesn't. I guess we'll see in a year.
