Unable to patch

I have the Canadian version of The Witcher that I purchased at a store so I have the hard copy of the CD. I've played it for a bit and it worked fine. Now I've tried to download and install the patches. I downloaded using the Update Gamer feature in the launcher and have patch 1.3 sitting ready in my The Witcher program folder. Everything goes well until halfway through when it said it cannot access something in my Documents and the installation fails. Not only that but everything in The Witcher folder disappears! I have to reinstall the game! This is getting very frustrating as I cannot update my game. Any suggestions?

do you have enough free space on C:\ and on where the game is installed?did you try to download the patch from somewhere else?

More than enough space and I downloaded the patch directly from The Witcher website. I have the retail game and I used the Update button on the launcher.

Default location, yes. I didn't try any other sites as I thought the official one would work. Every time I try to patch I need to reinstall so I'm trying to aviod trial and error.

Anyone? I bought the game at retail the very day it came out. I'd at least like to be able to patch it so my loading screens aren't a minute long.

This is a little bit of extra work, but has solved a multitude of problems with myself and other team members.Backup your save games, and completely uninstall The Witcher. Make sure save games folder is also delete. Download CCLeaner, RegScrubXP (if using XP), and JKDefrag from http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=5333.0. Turn your page file off by going to start -> control panel -> system -> advanced tab -> settings under performance -> advanced tab -> change at bottom (may be different process in Vista). Select no paging file and hit set, then ok. Restart computer in safe mode and then run CCleaner to clear out any temporary files and clutter, and then repair registry problems. Do this until you get 0 errors, then run RegScrubXP. Go back and forth until both programs show 0 problems. Then run your JKDefrag (much more efficient than Windows Defrag). When complete, try installing directly in safe mode. If it fails, restart and install in standard Windows. Also try installing patch 1.3 in safe mode, otherwise restart and install. Now put your backed up save files back into the save directory, and I would recommend deleting all saves except your last 3 if you can. Run JKDefrag again. Then follow the process above in control panel to turn your page file back on. Click Custom size and set initial and maximum size to "4096", click set, and ok. Restart the computer. And then try the game.Unless you are doing this, chances are there is still bits and pieces of The Witcher in the registry, and the game is notorious for requiring a good defrag regularly to run optimally. Your best chances of getting a good cleaning using Registry tools and a solid Defrag is in safe mode when only minimal services and software are loaded. Also important is not having a page file when defragging so there is not a block of locked clusters in your hard drive.

I'm in the middle of this but I have one question. Why such a large pager file? That seems a bit excessive for my system.I'll let you know how it turns out.

If it's 32-bit Windows, it will use a maximum of 4GB of memory regardless of the amount of physical memory you have. Of this 4GB of "virtual memory", 2GB is used for user programs like The Witcher and Antivirus programs (basically every program not installed by Windows or device drivers), while 2GB is reserved for Windows and Windows services. If you only have 1GB of physical memory, and you do not set the page file to at least 3GB, then whatever you have is cut in half. So it could be 1GB of virtual page file and 512MB of physical memory for OS, and 1GB of virtual page file and 512MB of physical memory for User programs. Now, if you're running programs in the background, plus The Witcher, that 1.5GB could be filled very quickly. The extra 512MB you open up by setting the page file to 4GB can make quite a bit of difference, i.e. working (albeit slower because of the hard drive speed) versus crashing when the memory hits over 1.5GB in requests.By setting 4096 (4GB), you ensure that you have the full 4GB covered. And unless you have a very small hard drive, it shouldn't make much of a difference if your page file is increased perhaps by 1 or 2GB.Now if you have a 64-bit OS, this does not apply. Or if you already have 4GB of physical memory (though you still need a swap file running regardless).
