Underworld Ascendant A RPG by OtherSide Entertainment

OtherSide Entertainment is resurrecting the Underworld series of dungeon crawling role-playing games with Underworld Ascension, the newly formed studio revealed today.

Paul Neurath, a veteran of games like Ultima Underworld and the former co-founder of System Shock and Thief developer Looking Glass Studios, founded the independent development studio, which acquired the Underworld brand and is looking to hire developers.

“With Underworld Ascension, we are excited to be bringing back the Underworld franchise, making it more vital than ever before," Neurath said.

Developer Blue Sky Productions' Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss was released in 1992. Neurath served as the game's designer, while Richard Garriott directed and Warren Spector produced the RPG. OtherSide's Underworld game is headed to PC at an unannounced date.

LGS = Looking Glass Studios, for those unfamiliar.

Also, Tim Stellmach(lead designer of Underworld 2, Thief and Thief 2) is involved in the project:

Damn. Got to say though i'm highly sceptical about whether they can make a game as feature rich and innovative as the Underworlds, huge and complex just doesn't really sum up what they were, they're like the polar opposite of modern streamlined games, so I can't see how the lads can do it. Love to see it happen, and continue the incline that DOS has begun, but i'm not hopeful.

I also have a few reservations about this, but if they manage to get Doug Church and Marc LeBlanc on this I'll probably explode with excitement.

There is no KS for this. That's good! I will be watching this one.

I would guess it to mean it's already funded?

@Dragonbird: May be, but I don't see it necessarily as good, since it might mean more restrictions from those who funded them. Crowdfunded projects tend to have less of such restrictions and provide more options like cross platform support for example. Of course individual situations can vary.

I am weary of the whole KS thing. Tired of the scams or failed projects. So, I am glad to see a game that I am looking forward to not be dependent its perceived coolness factor by the reddit crowd to raise funds.

Pledged $50.00. (Looking Glass vets? Please take my money!) Already at $200k!

I take back my comments above from (2014!). This game looks fantastic already.

They only want $600K. To me that means they already have some partial funding in place.

Apparently it's called "Underworld Ascendant" now.

Also will it be like Skyrim but with actual story?

I'd think it would be set mainly in an underworld given the heritage and name, the first Underworld (Stygian Abyss) was set in a massive old dungeon that has been part of the Ultima world for ages, a failed colony of diverse inhabitants and envirnments with a rock solid evolving story.

The second game (Labyrinth of Worlds) was very interesting, with a much better plot. On the anniversary of the Guardian's defeat in Ultima VII: The Black Gate, Lord British calls the Avatar (you) to a feast at Castle British, during which the Guardian strikes back by entombing the Castle in a massive shell of Blackrock. You search for a way out and find a smaller Blackrock jewel under the castle, each of which's facets leads to another world held by the Guardian: First a Goblin prison tower, then a flying fortress above a desert world, then a city swallowed by a great glacier etcetera. Really diverse and fascinating environments, each full of history and brimming with characters and backstory.

Linux version is promised only if they reach 750,000. I'm out. If they'll reach it then I will add my support.

Ya. That will help them reach the Linux stretch goal. You showed them! LOL!

On the contrary. If I contribute and they won't reach the stretch goal - there won't be the Linux version, and I won't get what I need. So such approach is flawed. I'm OK with them giving me back the money in such case, then I'll gladly contribute, but I don't see such option there. So my approach is rather simple, I contribute only if DRM-free Linux version is pledged by default and not as some stretch goal.

In other words, it's a bad idea to invest into a project which tells you - we might deliver what you need only if we get more investors and if not, we won't deliver but still will take your money to deliver some stuff to others. That's not the way to do business.

Resources are limited. Linux is too niche. I don't blame them for making it a stretch goal rather than a base goal.

@Zanderat : I don't blame them either, I'm just not going to contribute until I'm more sure they are going to make it :) Those who have spare funds can contribute to support Linux of course even risking not to reach the stretch goal. Though I'd see it more as a donation rather than investment.

I'm actually interested in the project and hope it will succeed (and reach the first stretch goal ;)). But I'm not less surprised that just a few here care about crowdfunded adventure games for example. I guess most either miss these threads or they aren't interested.
