Underworld Ascendant A RPG by OtherSide Entertainment

This is interesting, as I originally thought that $600K was too low to fund such an ambitious project. Turns there is additional funding in place and the $600K is what is needed to complete the game.
Just posted this on the "Gopher Channel" and thought it should be repeated here
"Regarding the $600k base funding, The developers (OSE ex-Looking Glass) said that they had secured additional funding last year and that the $600k is what they need to add.

OK so I just watched a couple of videos. Like that one about the engine: not a bridge, oh wait, a bridge! I'm sold. I have to back this.

Which one was that? I saw a video about someone being chased by spiders and blowing up a bridge with the single remaining spell (and then being puzzled about how to either rebuild the very same bridge or find another way back :) ).

Some video on their website, not on KS.

Btw is it really necessary to vote for this game on GOG? I mean, of course it will be on GOG, can't see myself redeeming it anywhere else.

I didn't check those, I'll look around there.

It will most probably be on GOG (no reason not to). I guess they ask to upvote it to bring more GOG users to the campaign by keeping the entry on top of the wishlist for a while. Many still have never heard of the project.

If you compare it to other porjects like Tides of Numenera, Pillars of Eternity and Original Sin, they seem to get less backers than others. Which is probably caused by the fact that many had no clue about their new studio. I at least have never heard of OtherSide Entertainment until this campaign.

Haha, I just saw that one (not bridge, a bridge!).

OSE is pretty much Looking Glass reborn. All the major players are involved. I upped my pledge to the physical tier. I want them to succeed. If the UU successor makes money, I am hoping their next project is a SS follow up..... One can hope....

Thanks for sharing that interesting interview. The part I found most interesting (and which made me more confident about the game) is when they were talking about why they are not using D&D mechanics. Basically their sentiments mirror my own; that D&D mechanics work well for pen and paper RPG's but don't translate well to cRPG's. D&D is too limiting and restrictive for cRPG's and despite playing (and enjoying) many cRPG's that use D&D mechanics I've always felt that things could have been done in a less restrictive and better way.

Dice rolls have no place in cRPG's since in cRPG's your character is actually performing the actions, not performing imaginary actions like in pen and paper RPG's. Having dice rolls in cRPG's is just an immersion breaker and a very "gamey" way of doing things which I find distracting and even quite silly at times. I don't like swinging at an opponent, visually hitting them with my weapon, having a dice roll determine that I didn't actually hit them (despite visually seeing it) and then seeing "dodge!" pop up on the screen. When things like this happen I might as well have someone standing behind me shouting "you're playing a video game!".

It's encouraging to know that the devs are aware of this issue and are designing the game in a way that avoids these type of situations.

All previous similar games had a significant bump in the final week and another one in the last few hours. No doubt this will reach at least the 600,000.

I didn't even know what this was until this week. Makes you wonder how many potential backers are still unaware.

I hope it reaches at least 850 thou so we can get better music and audio. That's about as important as good graphics.

Agreed. It's somewhat confusing though. In the chart it says 850,000, while on the page itself it says:

Enhanced Music is also part of this Stretch Goal. The music of the original Underworld games are memorable even to this day, and now we will be able to create music to inspire the next generation of CRPG gamers!

Which sounds like they are talking about 800,000 one.

Ah, they actually just changed that recently:

We've been listening to our fans and have decided to move Enhanced Music down from the $850,000 stretch goal to the $800,000 goal, alongside the Companion Creatures. This will help ensure that more music tracks and more elaborate scores are added to the game.

That's more probable than reaching 850,000.

Their stretch goals kinda suck actually. Who cares about some Tracy Hickman novel when there are far more important things that can make the actual game better? For example they could have the mod tools at 700k. A novel shouldn't be a priority.

Agreed. Some things they talk about sound great while others make me scratch my head. I'm going to wait until they get a bit further along with development before I decide whether to give them my monies. Though I'm glad they're promising innovation and to try new approaches. Definitely what is needed since it's been sorely lacking of late.

Looking strong to hit $800K!
