Almost got an heart attack... Three trolls almost managed to enter in my base!
Not sure I like these events, three angry trolls could deal serious damages to my base, built with love (and a lot of sweat).

They are one of the more annoying attacks. My solution has been to dig a deep moat around the base.
Yep, I farm bunch of stone and I will make an "articifial cliff" all around and far enough (as far as I can go) in the ocean.
(I will "raise" the whole top to the height of the cliff.)
But the rules > do not AFK, even a short time^^
These trolls with with clubs the size of a tree trunk can cause massive damage rather quickly.

I did that once, and it took literal hours to get the stone, raise the ground, and make the ground as even as I could. Worked like a charm, though; no raids ever reached the base.

Yep, I toke me all the night, but it seem to work fine. I get another troll event and they stay ouside :)
But I discover one thing that bother me... In addintion to the max depth limit (which follow more or less the surface level, so not flat), there is also a max high limit which also follow the surface level. So it's pretty much impossible to to have a nice horizontal "cliff... More I approach the ocean, more the max limit is low, the "wall" seem efficient, but it's quite ugly, sadly :(

I think I'll redo my base again, a little bit further in the land and do what @Riven-Twain said. I'm going to dig just a little to flatten the largest area possible (to stop mobs spawn) and make a trench all around with just a small bridge as access (in medieval castles style).

This base will simply serve as a port. Shame, I started to decorate it nicely :giggle:

Yeah, I ran into that limitation as well.

"Ground is shaking" (aka trolls) is THE most annoying raid there is. One reason being because it happens so early in game and there are always several trolls. I have never bothered to make ground walls myself, but I have had other methods. One of them being above mentioned moat around the base, which works like a charm.

Other methods have been:
- Island base far enough from the shore, where you cover the whole ground area. Raids are still happening, but no enemies will spawn because of the water. Downside is transporting non teleportable materials.
- When you mine your copper stuff, collect all the stone and save it for later use. When you unlock stonecutter, build high stone wall around your base. Fast. Works like a charm even with stronger enemies, but requires lot of stone cutters around the area for quick fixes. Keep your buildings and animals far enough from the fence! Trolls reach surprisingly far.

EDIT: Panic solution! Lure the enemies away from your precious base. They are after you, not your property (if they don't have to get to you through it).

It only triggers if a troll has died in the world, so, in theory, it can be avoided.

And, if you don't kill the trolls until after the event ends, more won't spawn. This applies to all raids, as far as I know, and is why I, at least early on, avoid killing the raid dwarf brute until after the event ends.

The downside with my current base is the sea... My "walls" are in U shape and I can't dig deep enough to stop trolls. So they tend to go around the wall by the sea to approach me and since there is no path to reach me, they start attacking the structures. They already managed to destroy two times my Drakkar and to really damage the harbor pier, which is annoying to fix.
Another issue and I don't know why, maybe I'm unlucky (sure I am, events that I had were mostly troll events...) or I spend to much time in inventories, but I genrally don't see the "starting" message of the event. I'm aware that there is something happening because of the minimap or because I hear them (or indeed, I feel the ground shaking^^).

Anyway, I started to flatening a big area a little bit further in the lands. I will use a cart to transfer my metals from the port (it's not very far, few hundred meters). At least I won't have these "ugly" walls which really spoil the view :giggle:

If you find a cliff of some sort near the ocean, you could perhaps try to build your base there. Just try to make the drop to the sea as straight as possible and put some walls right at the edge of it, so trolls can't climb in that easily? I will try to find a location like that for myself, but it's bit tricky to find pretty enough place with high enough cliff :D

I had one place like that and it kinda worked okay (cliff on the sea side and moat on the other). Never saw a troll trying to get in from the sea side and that's why defenses are lighter there. Although I also did try to keep them away from that direction by running outside of the fortress in that other direction. Trolls also never tried to cross the moat when I was shooting at them by standing on the roof inside the fortress. It's not that pretty, but it works. Or I was just lucky when living in that camp. At the back there is also short "hidden" platform for the boat. I do mod the game a lot and build stuff in creative mode, but as far as I remember, this base I did build from scraps. That's also why it looks so messed up :D

This is how the place looks on a minimap:

Yeah, it more difficult to find an ideal place that it seem at first, even if maps are pretty huge :)

Try few thing on creative :)
Building without "base island", very far from a shore, in a low deep ocean (but still in a meadows biome), sadly it doesn't work... Waves during storms are higher than the ground high limit... which is already very high from the water level (5 big stone walls). If you don't want have water in your base during storms, the ground level of your building must be at minimum at 6 or 7 stone walls from the water level :D
I also tried on island... So indeed, no way to dig and even by elevating the ground level, mobs still spawn (no matter the type of floor, farmland, stone path).

And I tested, because ? Because while exploring mountains, I discover drakes, which also are in events and can also damage building... that's annoying too.

Hmm, my island base isn't that high ground and the storm waves only happen in one corner of the house as far as I have seen. That corner (with beds) practically has a foundation on the ocean itself. Then again, one side of the island base is "covered" by very small mini island which only has one lighthouse (with workbench inside) in it to prevent monsterspawns. Now that you mentioned it, I'm not sure if I have been wandering around the island during the storm to see how far the waves go elsewhere.

I'm not quite sure what things definitely stop monster spawns, but for me hiding workbenches all over the area seems to be the most efficient way. I have hidden them inside the bushes, behind the trees, under the floors or made small useless "sheds" or the likes for them. You have to pay attention to not miss _one_single_inch_ inside your base area or monsters might spawn. I keep cheking the workbench coverage by running around with roof piece selected in my hammer, which shows you the area of effect. I once missed little tiny area and that kept spawning monsters all the time. When I made one extra workbench to cover that area, spawns stopped.

My island base didn't have one single enemy during raids before I pickaxed two huge rocks from the lighthouse island. I tested it by force starting the raids in creative mode like 10 times and had few normal ones happening too in between. Nothing ever happened. After destroying those two huge rocks on the other end of the island, I started randomly getting few (like one - four) monsters in the lighthouse island and those were all blobs/oozers from the swamp. I also got one flying raid. Monsters always appeared to the part of the island that had previously been blocked by those rocks and I think my island workbench may not be covering that spawn point. I should make another one and try if it works whenever I would have time.

EDIT: Since the raid focuses at me and not to my property, theoretically I could probably stop those little raid spawns by moving my base (aka location where I spend most time) to the other end of the island? Now that I think of it, those times when nothing happened, I may have been testing it somewhere else than inside my actual house. Or it was the effect of removing the rocks

One way to prevent waves inside the base could be building bit further away from the shore? Haven't tried that yet since I haven't found a proper island for it.

I started building on shoals that are right in the middle of the sea, there was no island at all, no land surface (they appear on the map as "little" black waves).
Then I started build nicely and a big storm with big waves... I raised the wall by one raw slowly until the waves doesn't pass above. And finally, when I started to fill between the walls with the hoe, I hit the max high of the ground before reaching the last walls. So I gave up :D

I just tested campfires and it work. But I read that they don't need to be lit (so I'll try you dig a bit to hide them all over the island and raise the level of the ground a little with the hoe, to bury them entirely.
Then I'll trigger an event :)

That exactly what I do, I search.... So I load a bunch of random seeds, remove the fog and take a look of the meadows islands. If there is none (or "bad" ones), I quit, delete the world and start over.
And I think I found it. Not too big, "deep" water on one side and far from anything (but a good central point for boats) :)

Oooo I missread your post a bit. Now this smells like a challenge. Could it be done somehow? There are parts in the ocean that almost come to the surface but not quite. There are places that might also have just few rocks visible but not actual ground. I wonder if it could work with iron supported beams or something. Without having to raise the ground too much.

Luckily I have a day off, so I know what to do now :coolstory:

EDIT: Based on super quick test, the rocks on the surface seem to be enough. I raised the ground a bit (one big stone block high) and now I have been standing in thunderstorm quite a while and only got my feet wet. And if I moved like few meters away from the spot, I got covered by giant waves. This is how the place originally looked. So if this keeps going, three blocks high should be enough for a dry base. I also think that this could be doable in vanilla. Tricky, but doable.

My guess, the physic of the water being surprisingly well done, the "islands", a bit like on the shores, decrease the high of the waves. But in the shoals, nothing stop the (giant) big waves from the ocean during the storms (which are higher than a drakkar when you're in the storm while sailing^^).
I should have taken screenshots, the wall was stupidly high... Fine, waves pass above the wall, it still too low. So one more row of big stone wall... until reaching six rows from the water level :D

Almost, almost ! One more row and it should be fine :D
Next, try the hidden shut down campfires with "regular" spawns and events.

If it's fine, I return doing the same in survival :giggle:
(on side note, isolated island is great to farm deers and boars, they constantly respawn on a tiny spot^^)
