Really really liking it.
Yeah, I really like it also.
I pre-ordered the premium edition of The Outer Worlds 2 to play it october 24th, but not sure I would be able to... The game got me and I must to see where the story goes till the end. I love the art style, characters, musics and above all, the atmosphere... I just spent 10-15 minutes listening a radio program (I think it's "The Daddy Issues Podcast", not sure^^) and it was great :giggle:
I don't regret buying it at all!

They really ought to port the OG to current gen consoles. I'd gladly pay for that :coolstory:

I've been playing it some... Now, I've never gotten around to playing the original so perhaps that affects my opinion but so far I'm liking it.

My main impressions right now are:

- Fem Nomad can suck me dry any time...

- The "Collectable-o-vision" thing is neat. Less concern about missing notes and pickups without needing to painstakingly trawl through every inch of the environment (Even if it's made easier naturally by Vampire Vision highlighting such things)

- The whole "You have a lamer and less interesting person in your head" schtick is still not my jam. Hated it in CP2077 and hate it in VTM. Along with "Yank you away from your character to then play as the super limited and boring lame and less interesting character" segments.

- Combat feels "Fine". I'm playing on Hard and it's been pleasant. Not the most nuanced, but I'm an elder vampire taking on ghouls, it's not supposed to be anything but a one sided stomp. First boss fight was decent too.

- The grind for unlocking other abilities outside your chosen bloodline is a bit annoying. Though I guess it's because of the overall small number of available abilities... So you have to suck on tons of civilians to get the blood points to unlock them an then grind out the skill points to then unlock unlock them in order to access other abilities...

- The overall world seems interesting. The atmosphere and design details are top notch. The story seems serviceable, I'm pretty early on so don't have much of a scope on it right now.

None of the OG devs were in this one, small wonder it turned out the way it did

After playing around 10 hours, the game seems to have several annoyances/inconveniences, but nothing too deal breaking for me.
- Only auto save/checkpoints available.
- Voice acting in general is... disturbing? It keeps poking my ears all the time, instead of sounding natural.
- Character creation is meh at best.

And they really did manage to collect few of my major dislikes. Winter scenery and forced character swapping (Witcher had these too, though, and it was still a great game).

But I really do enjoy the stealth combat (easy difficulty and preferring exploration over combat kinda player) and story seems to be okay, too. In general, I'm having fun when playing. As long as the characters don't talk too much. Replay value also seems to be good, based on different dialogue options. I already feel like doing a second playthrough too.

And I do love my preorder jukebox.

Yeah, that's my major complain... I always think it's a terrible idea, no matter the game :(
Beside, I played for more than 30 hours without issue so far but now, not sure why but I start to encounter issue after issue... And thanks to the BAD save system I lost several hours of progression. I had to reload several times (stuck inside the scenery after a jump, sent underground by opening a door,...) and well... unfortunately being sent back to the very start of a (long) quest.

But I will put a stop to my playthrough for now and will play The Outer Wolrds 2 while waiting for (I hope) some updates and fixes.

I could be wrong, but I think the "winter" is simply an excuse to not having cars on roads. I don't really like snow, cold or winter in games, but I think it work here because it add something to the atmosphere (it's the kind of long winter nights during which everyone would have prefered to stay at home, except... well those who probably don't feel the cold^^).

The more I play it, the more I'm noticing cracks at the seams.

- It honestly feels like the devs wanted to make LA Noire rather than an actual vampire game. I even forget that the game is literally set in 2024 rather than 1924 a lot of the time.

- Lack of NPC variety. There seems to be like 4 unique NPCs and similarly low amount of random NPC dialogue. Which is very jarring. This is of course exacerbated by the need to feed on bunches of civilians for blood points so you get up close to them often.

- The non-existence of traffic is super odd. Like, yes, it's set at night and it's snowing. But it's a city in 2024 (Also, there's plenty of references to people being dropped off by a car as well as fresh tyre treads on every road) people still drive at all hours.

- There's a major disconnect between the very beginning of the game and the rest of gameplay. Everyone makes a big deal out of the initial tutorial where you killed a couple of humans and a handful of ghouls... But then no-one gives a damn when you mass murder for every future quest (With often vastly more conspicious means when you're using your actual powers to literally blow people up or lop off heads)

- Also, there's a bit of a disconnect between the setting and gameplay via the number of cops around. Now, I'm not too familiar with living in America, but having a TON of cops having beat patrols at night doesn't seem natural. I get this is supposed to be an anti-masquerade break thing but honestly, having Order ghouls try and take you down makes more sense than trying to pretend there's a billion beat cops on night shift (And would also make more sense of the full masquerade break consequence of being staked through the heart)

Gloomy wandering through the streets and endless dialogues.
I would describe the combat system as “squirrel paws.” That's probably how squirrels fight over nuts in the forest.
We ve been promised a cool RPG, but what we got was a second-rate action game.
This must be how games created by vampires for vampires look like. Aka Vampire Walking Simulator.
P.S. The “humanity saving system” from the first Bloodlines has completely disappeared into thin air.

I was contemplating buying it a couple of days ago, until I read about this. I barely managed to tolerate a less obtrusive version of it in a much better game (Johnny in CP2077). Maybe I'll still pick it up some day, on a deep discount, if somebody manages to mod out most of the clown-in-your-head stuff.

I disagree with only one thing: I do believe vampires would make a better vampire game, they more than likely know what they're talking about, unlike this game's devs :coolstory:

Okay, so now I've completed the game.

I must say... Not a big fan of the ending. Both the twist and also the resolution of the cases were not my thing (The latter being a stretch of the usage of "Resolution"). I'll say no more to prevent spoilers.

The post-ending scene is very W3-esk in that it directly points to a certain handful of decisions that impacted the actual story (Of which there are literally 2 unless there are some hidden endings I don't care to try and find). There's probably some dialogue changes based on some dialogue options that affect temperments, but besides that... 2 actual choices, one of which is nullified anyway if you pick the "Wrong" choice for the first one.

Gameplay fell off considerably after the first portion of the game. Way too many "Stick you in an arena with constantly spawning dudes" sections that completely nullify like 80% of all the skills in the game that are focused around stealth. Meaning the game revolved heavily around the shallow punching gameplay or (As in my case) abusing the (Only) 3 powers that enable takedowns in combat. Like, bruh, there were hardly any powers to begin with and the game then forced most of them to be literally useless.

To say nothing of the tedium that was actually traversing the game. With no fast travel and no good options for mobility (You have your Vampire Sprint but that can't be used on the ground because it fills up your masquerade break in seconds. You can use it on rooftops but there's too many tall buildings that get in the way to make it actually viable as a means of travel to not mention the parts of the game when rooftops are FULL of enemies that'll be shooting you) but a LOT of "Run across the entire city" moments.

Sidequests were trash. Outside the 3 that were literally "Go find all the collectables". There was just a copy/paste of 3 remaining ones "Go do a fetch quest", "Go kill a specific civilian" and "Go kill a specific enemy". Their kill ones at least had the decency to offer a non-lethal solution.

Bloodlines are so shallow as to be irrelevant. Despite them being a literal part of the series title. Your choice of bloodline only changes a few dialogues (But not in a meaningful way. It'll just be referenced like 3 times throughout the entire game), your punch animation and your base passive (As well as cost to acquire certain skills).

Overall, the game is "Passable" in that it wasn't horrible to play through, outside some bugs (Like clipping into a wall after jumping, clipping into the floor when crouch sprinting, enemies not having the takedown options show up for no reason for an absurd amount of time after spawning in and the skill for "Mortals can't hurt you when you're feeding" basically only working like 30% of the time)

But I wouldn't consider it to be particularly good. I don't see myself doing another playthrough of the game ever.

Maybe I'll still pick it up some day, on a deep discount, if somebody manages to mod out most of the clown-in-your-head stuff.
That's unlikely to happen.

Since sadly, Fabien is much more integrated into the game than Johnny.

Like, whereas Johnny is basically irrelevant outside a few missions like Tapeworm. Fabien and the Nomad are almost constantly talking back and forth throughout most of the game. With a couple of the "Memory flashbacks" being directly relevant to interactions as the Nomad.

I'm playing the game and it's fun so far. Not quite an RPG, but it's good.

Interesting review focusing on mechanics (not about story):

Gloomy wandering through the streets and endless dialogues.

Or parkour hopping between roofs Batman style ;) That mechanic is really well done.

Is it just me or it's some widespread bug. Ambient music plays for me only once when I enter some area, but then it stops and doesn't loop. I couldn't find any setting that controls it.

Not sure it's a bug.
One thing I noticed it's when leaving the apartment after a night (or a rather a day^^), there is always a song which is played, but only once. Usually a very good song which really "improve" the atmosphere. So it's possible it's something intended.
I love it, but I whish hearing these song more often :)

Yeah, exactly. In the original game the music loops. I think it's a bug or at least they should give an option to loop it. Since in result most of the time I just explore stuff without any music :)

I'll send a bug report to developers (or would it be a feature request?) to allow music looping :)
