Vampire Bloodlines Tech Help Thread

There is an unofficial patch for VTMB. There is a basic version, which fixes up the graphics a bit and most importantly fixes a whole slew of bugs, including comatability problems, that Troika never fixed.

Then there is the plus version, it adds quests, new occult items (sort of like permanent boosts), and backgrounds for your characters. The backgrounds do things like increase one skill at the loss of another, or sometimes just do things like swap the order of your skills so instead of 3 points for physical and 1 for social it is the other way around.

Vampire:Bloodlines is well worth getting to work IMHO. The haunted house in particular is worth more then many entire games.

While I totally agree that at humanity zero your control over your character should be spotty at best. Assuming C-SWAT doesn't take you down (which it likely) how would you implement your time in the psycho ward recovering humanity? Should some of your augmentations be forceably removed (as is indicated in the PnP rules)?

Yes, take the lot out, make the player go through 'rehab' and psychotherapy. Illegal modifications would be confiscated and the player would be fined, (or jailed depending on severity,) and the rest would be slowly added back in during your time in the clinic. Either way, a good while of game time should pass, (though not real time, players would just get bored, 20 minutes tops?) and the player should be left with a large bill for the medical care, (even an excess fee if the player was smart enough to have medical cover.)

The whole process should return the player to about HUM 2, and there should be follow up sessions with a psychologoist via a VR uplink, rather than having to travel to them, once a week/month/whenever in game time.

Thats how I'd like to see that done.

UPDATE:

Vampire still isn't working, BUT I got it to start which is more than I was able to do previously, I just can't get it to stop crashing. I've followed the advice in the readme file and it looks like others are having similar issues. I'll post the crash report for those who understand such things, as I may as well be a caveman when it comes to reading that stuff:

Update: Wesp5's Unofficial Patch 7.7beta working.

1. Use Steam's Backup function to backup VTMB
2. Install Wesp5's Unofficial VTMB Patch 7.7beta to a folder on the desktop.
3. Copy the contents of the update to the Steam VTMB install folder.
4. Run Respatch for monitor if needed, mine is 1680x1050.
5. Run the game from the short cut or Steam.



Make sure that both Steam and Vampire.exe are set to run in admin mode of course.

I had some minor problems with game.
I seem to recall something about a missing DLL.

Problem- Various.
Answer- RUN AS ADMIN. Run everything as administrator. I set my steam to auto run like this. Installing anything is best doing with admin options enabled. To do this, right click a programs icon, and find the check box that says "run as admin"

Problem- Ram less then 15 mb!
Answer- two ways to fix this. Install the latest Unofficial patch, http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php, this is the best way. Although True patch doesn't fix this. The other worse way to fix it is going into run/dxdiag. Then boot/advanced options, and lower your ram to 2 gigs.

Problem- Crashes on start up.
Answer- don't ask me why this works.. but it really did for me. go into your steam folder. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\ common\vampire the masquerade - bloodlines. Copy everything in the "bin" folder, then paste it in the vampire folder. I don't remember WHICH vampire folder the main one or the one in the main one that says Vampire. So do them both
Note: This is also for crashing after the first4 logo screens.

Special note: Make sure to disable automatic updates in steam before you patch. If you don't it will overwrite some things back to 1.2 while you patch. After it though, it shouldn't matter (because I KNOW it likes to switch back to auto).

Other things to know.
Compatability mode can help. It's the same tab that you use to make things always run as admin. Switching it to windows XP is the best choice. right click the icon, properties, compatibility.

Besides "-console" you can add other commands to the start up. for instance "-full" makes it run in full screen. Commands are easy. The line should look something like this. "-console -full"

The tools folder (you get after patching with the unofficial patch) has a LOT of great things to use at risk. ResPatch, installing for 64, but always make sure you start them with admin.

Sometimes it's just best to uninstall, delete the vampire folder (this is important because leaving files there could mess up the reinstall), and reinstall again. Make sure you do this when re-patching a game to another version. it's just plain easier that way.

I'm running the disk version in Wine - and it works pretty well (with the latest unofficial patch).

By the way, a useful trick it to set forced anisotropic filtering to x16 through your driver settings. It really makes the game look much better.
