Appreciation thread!!!

Derailed into a war

I support Volsung's suggestion to either discuss Valve vs. rest of the world elsewhere or to just stop and let the positive vibes of the OP lighten up this place for a while.

Yeah my bad for bringing Valve up, especially that the guy doesn't play on PC.

Either way awesome thread, and I really liked how much appreciation he has for these guys! The Xbox port must be superb to have such an effect :D

I am sure TW2 is unlike any other XBOX game available.

I've always played PC, and I didn't builded my PC under Steam or others statements. Many of the games I've played have worked well in my vulgar-crude and anti-chic PC. Just a bit of knowledge, organization and common sense.... />

I persuaded 4 people, who don't even play their games too often, to buy it on Xbox and none of them came back disappointed

No I gave a few other reasons concerning Valve's services and user-friendly tools, but yes, that is one of the main reasons why you should be thankful for steam, it sells PC games. If it didn't exist, PC sales would have been in a really tough spot, so tough that some publishers would choose to exclude the PC from their future games. And the thousands of console players who built PCs in the last 2 years would've stuck to their consoles if it wasn't for Steam's ridiculous offers and the fact that you can buy and install a game in two clicks.

And if you don't realize how important sales are then you're just unrealistic my friend. Why do you think Witcher 3 is gonna be so huge? Because it reviewed well? No, it's because it sold well.

And there's no need to downvote me just because you seem to obsessively hate Valve.

I think people like steam and their deals which is something to do with valve i think? As i never game on PC i do not know but also that and a game called half life was really good apparently? I am so glad CDPR decided to bring out its games on consoles too now otherwise i would never have experienced their great games and nice attitude towards fans. Though their games are far too brilliant and far too complex and interesting for the average console gamer probably. It is a sad thought when you see these guys who make amazing games and do well for themselves but its sad when you see their games sales versus call of duty or gears of war etc.. Its pathetic when you know CDPR quality of game is so much higher and the stories so much more intersting. Oh well.

You are the most decent console owner I ever met on internet .

Well no volsung i actually loved dragon age origins too, that was a really good game i thought and mass effect 1, but since then bioware has gone so down hill and i actually despise them now to be honest.
But the witcher 2 is a great game, but the main thing i appreciate about CDPR is how decent they treat their consumers and how they see the importance of remaining independent and having full creative control over their products and vision. And lets face it, developers know whats good for games not publishers. I see them as very similar but better than bioware used to be, bioware i hope is a huge lesson for guys like CDPR to not be bought out.
I think mass effect 3 and dragon age 2 outsold their previous entrys but i hated them and on the internet i see nothing but bad words said about bioware nowadays and i am one of them saying them lol. But its sales bioware are after now it seems, whereas you can tell CDPR actually care about how their products are perceived and what their core audience want. Ofcourse they want more sales who doesn't in the industry but they don't seem the kind to ''sell out'' to get them. Which is refreshing.
Anyways lol

Oh and Red Dead Redemption was another brilliant game which if i remember PC gamers never got to play? Which is unfortunate because i loved that, but then again Rockstar is definately one of the good guys in my book too where they don't rush out games and milk their franchise. If ubisoft or ea or activision owned them could you imagine how many grand theft autos would have been released with the sale power that franchise name have? Every half year lol.

Personally i don't use steam all that much, i just don't like that service but i have nothing against valve. They have some neat games, that's all. Im playing pc games 20 years now and i remember how me and my friends were pissed off by always online drm when steam appeared.

Hey OP, if you like fantasy RPGs you might want to try Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Be advised, it has a narrative feature which might seem kind of hokey, but otherwise the game is fun.

I don't really want to involve myself in a "this one's best" kind of war, but I wouldn't credit Valve too much about what every gamer likes best - sales and other bargains. 'Tis not Valve who decides prices. I can only imagine torrent of lawsuits from publishers whose games' prices were arbitrarily lowered by the seller. While Valve might be the one that's organizing one holiday sale or the other, it's the publishers who set prices in order to monetize the most from their product's life cycle. Steam simply makes it so much easier for them, being one place instead of thousands of physical shops all around the world. Valve simply facilitated digital distribution model which now is de facto standard, however for me it's a mixed blessing. Sure it's easier to buy games this way (and still I prefer to do it elsewhere, since Steam's prices are quite ridiculous in comparison to game prices in my country), but it's true that Valve might unilaterally block my account, even by accident or mistake, and every single game I ever purchased will be gone with the wind. And the offline mode sometimes works, mostly doesn't; not once when I had a network failure and tried to run Steam offline in order to play a game, I got an error message and couldn't get the damn thing started, so no gaming for me until I had my net fixed. So from my perspective, the whole platform is an implementation of always-online DRM, and I really don't love it very much.

It's not a side-scroller, if that's what you mean. You can get nerdy about the definitions if you want, but if you're playing a character in a setting, then you're role-playing to an extent.

But yeah OP, it's DMC-like hack/slash.

Then I guess Call of Duty and Gears of War are RPGs then by your definition, in fact so would bomberman and pac-man, and pretty much every other game in existence, because in all of them you are playing a character in a setting.

RPG means more than just Role-playing Game now.

Also Castlevania games are all platformering action-adventure games.

Arguing about what is an RPG is pointless enough without trying to turn each other's positions into straw men. cmdr_flashheart did not write that playing a character in a setting immediately turns a game into an RPG. Claiming that he did misrepresents his position. Please return to the topic before the moderators need to intervene.

Valve's done a lot for PC gaming, not the least of which is outcompeting Direct2Drive and GFW Marketplace, good riddance to the former and may the latter die a horrible death. The fact that they're not everybody's cup of tea, including mine (you can pry my discs from my cold dead hands, thank you very much), doesn't change the fact that they've been able to reach a wide audience with a large number of titles.

I don't want to get nerdy about the definitions - in fact, I hate people who get butthurt over stuff like that, it's just that Castlevania is clearly not an RPG (not sure why you thought "not RPG" = "side scroller"). Just wanted to make sure the OP knows that the only thing the game you're suggesting has in common with fantasy RPGs is the fantasy element.

But yeah, we shouldn't derail the topic any further.

Most action-adventure games play like hybrid RPGs nowadays (exploring the world to advance, xp for character development), so even if a RPG fan picks up and plays C:LoS, they will not be disappointed.

Lol, this thread was originally an appreciation thread, so in spirit of that, um CDPR rules...?
