the "error messsage that it has encountered an error and needs to close" is common. 4 causes.. 1) install the Vista memory leak patch ;)2) Install the latest ATI/Nvidia Drivers OR revert back a driver. (nVidia drivers have also been shoddy on Vista)3) Don't matter if you have 2, 3 or 4 SLI'd nVidia's or Fired up ATI's you still need to follow points 4 and 6 in the patch notes ;)4) Turn of DoF, this has commonly fixed alot of crashes between loading and cut scenes.(I run a Creative X-FI fatal1ty pro card fine)

Thanks. The game unfortunately doesn't look as good running in 1024x768 as it does 1280x1024 :( [it does load a lot faster though in the lower resolution]

I just want to throw in my "it worked! Thank Melitele, it worked!" Vista 32, all the Vista patches, Core 2 Duo, Nvidia 8800GTX, 2 gig RAM, and Witcher patch 1.2. The game crashed intermittently during loads/saves or area transitions, probably every 15 to 20 minutes consistently into chapter 3. In chapter 3, I did both the IncreaseUserVa fix (set it to 3072), and I moved my swap file over to another partition. Not only has it completely stopped crashing on me, but patch 1.2 had caused annoying choppiness in Vizima when there were a lot of NPC's around. That, also, was fixed with the IncreaseUserVa + swap file tweaks. The game now runs smooth as butter in every way.I am happy to put up with some bugs for such an awesome game. I am an RPG addict, and this game is pure crack. With these tweaks, it is bug-free crack.

Hi,How are people finding trying to run the game in windowed mode (the solution I posted earlier)? That solved all my crash problems, with no need for BCDEDIT or whatever. It doesn't even seem to matter what the resolution / detail settings are as long as it is windowed not full screen.?

still crashes. I've tried suffering by lowering the resolution down to 1024x768...that so far seems to help. :)

I'm using Vista and my computer is running way over what the game system requirements demand. I installed all the updates and patches, but when I go to launch the game nothing happens. I've tried going into the system directory in The Witcher folder and clicked on the exe file in there and it gives me an error message saying "the application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is inccorect." What do I do?

okay so I thought i had fixed the problem, turns out that my resolution had to be 1024x768 because I have a Nvidiea Geforce 8800 GTX, so i thought that wouls slove the problem, true I can save now and I can go into new areas BUT every third autosave or so and often with cutscenes the game fecking crashes! I'm getting really annoyed at how buggy this game is especially considering it came out in November yet it doesn't support my graphics card properly or my quad-core  all in all, what should I do wich won't involve me altering my system or piddleing about in my computer for one game?

Ok, im not sure if tihs is going to sound stupid.... but here it goe anyways. When you buy a game with GAMES FOR WINDOWS stamped on the box isnt it suppose to run with all the bells and whistles if you meet the system requirements posted on the box?I read that to have that title posted on your game box it is suppose to run perfectly and not crash all the time. I know people have posted some work arounds and i have tried a few but i am not interested in going into the guts of windows vista and messing with settings because i bought a game with the belief that it would run without major problems. That is not a justification to be able to play a game I bought. Maybe people who have posted on the boards about work arounds enjoy the tinkering but im just ticked off because of all the dozen or so games i have bought this year this is the FIRST one that crashes like this one does, actually its the only 1 that crashes period. The latest patch notes states that with my vid card. Nvidia 7950 GT is amount the top tier cards and i SHOULD NOT play this game above 1024-768. What are we back in 1998? I have a widescreen computer monitor and for 1 it doesnt feel very good playing with those black bars on the sides of the game screen and second im not to fond of having that border on my screen while playing a game for hours on end.... burn in!So to clarify my points.... 1 I have a top tier computer system that meets all the requirments of this game. 2 I should be able to buy a game with the GAMES FOR WINDOWS title and expect it to play out of the box. 3 I should not have to play with the guts of the operating system to get the game to function as it is suppose to. 4 Its a shame for any developer to shove this garbage as is on the public and expect people to just accept.... plz be patient we are having technical difficulties and will have your game up and running all tickityboo in a short amount of time. Here is a game that runs beautifully on my system after just 1 windows patch.... Hellgate London..... this game has just about as much system requirements as this game so to say that its peoples problems who have bought this game is a bunch of garbage!

Mate... you are completly right, but still PC RPGs are ALWAYS buggy when released, you have to live with that. Other then the (inexcusable, true) Windows Vista crashing the game runs fine, no other major bugs. I think - even if you don't like to mess with Windows - you should try the fix some guy described earlier. I did it, no crash anymore for me. Windows runs fine too. (BTW ALSO some random crashes in Windows has stopped.) Vista is crap, you have to admit it, it's not a coincidence some site described it as the "biggest disappointment of 2007". (Meaning: worst crap of the year, GG Microsoft). First I was angry too, but do the fix, and you'll be happy, trust me. There's the link, if you can't find it anymore:http://alfred.co.in/how-to/witcher-vista-crash-fix-how-toIt worked for me...PS: If you want to see a bug ridden monster, you should have seen Two Worlds, recently released. It was the WORST bug fested crap RPG I have ever tried. It was such a joke, I couldn't beleive my eyes, it was released. The Witcher is nowhere near that...PS2: Hellgate London is a rather poor game...

I cant even start chapter one, I have tried to start the game as an administrator without any diference, I changed the resolution from 1920*1200 to 1600*1200 without any change in chrashes. I havent tried to change the BCDEDIT /set IncreaseUserVa 2800 since I have 4gb ram. Anyone that has any good tip to a sad Witcher?

Uh, the point of the bcdedit is to enable the use of more RAM if you have more than 2GB. Doing bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072 will allow The Witcher to use 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB, as it is already Large Address Aware.Try that, and also try 1024x768 as that seems to work for some people.

Thanks, I tried res on 1024x768 and it seems to work or I was able to save the game. Hurra for me. I dont have time to play more now since I have spend most of the day with this problem. I really hope I will be able to play on max res again soon on the next patch. I dont think I want to change the RAM specs for now, On the system tools it says I got 3582 MB and I think that should be enough. But if vista is so stupid that it wont give witcher what it needs of ram I will change it as you said tomorrow
