Voice acting in different languages

It's still a matter of taste.

I for one really don't why anyone would like the german voice acting of Half Life 2, Mass Effect,... but there are people who like it. You see, it differs from person to person.

No offense, but Geralt's English voice sounds very closer to which I hear in mind when I read the books. And Folset sound great in Russian....French voices, on the contrary sound me too phoneticalyl perfect, as always Frenchs do it when they dubbing any audiovisual work...

Thanks for the input. Judging from the videos I think it is safe to say that polish and english are the best versions, french sounds aweful, german is ok. So I will stay with english. IMO the Polish version of TW2 is the best. Nearly all the characters sound their parts. Some, like Henselt's actor, are really brilliant.

Listening to some of these youtube vids I get the impression that the German version is the weakest. I don't speak more than a few hundred words of (terrible) German, but it sounds like they didn't get it right -- almost as if their voice actors had Polish accents. The others seem better.

Finished both games in polish. I consider it far superior than english that was in comparison... dry? Shame you guys don't speak polish, it's really a treat for native polish speakers.

TW2. English edges out the Polish with the exception of Triss and Dandilion. Random NPC's in particular are much better in English. As for Geralt, both English and Polish are epic.


I strongly recommend to everyone new to the Witcher to play at least once in Polish for each game. It's like watching a foreign movie - you steep yourself in the dialect and mannerisms of the culture, or you lose a big part of the intent.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not familiar with Polish at all but I started playing the Witcher 2 in Polish and I'm really enjoying it so far. Triss sounds so much better in Polish and I like Geralt's Polish voice actor. They all sound like what I thought they would sound in a foreign language. Too bad the subtitles don't show the literal translations, but it suffices.

I love the mannerisms in Polish for both the Witchers but English did see a major improvement for the second game. Doug did a very good job.

The german version is AWFUL in Witcher 2. But it doesn't matter as you can always play the english one.

God of war is an American pop culture version of Greek mythology.

Unless you are saying that the Greek voice acting has superior delivery, I would say that any attempt at "authenticity" is wasted. And even so, if there was such an attempt, the correct language would be Ancient Greek not Modern.

It WAS the American culture of the Greek Mythology before it brings the Greek language in Ascension. Since it's a Sony exclusive, it gets the Greek voiced translation as it was supposed to have from the start. We asked Sony Hellas to translate ALL God of War games, and this request was accepted.

There was also a XBOX game, which used the Ancient Greek language, named Theseis, but it got cancelled, because the Greek devs disappeared. Rumor has them having their personal problems(army, family, etc), which made them cancel the game.

I actually liked her English voice, although her polish voice sounds pretty damn good.

I played Russian versions of both TW1 and 2, and both were pretty terrible. May be it is just me, but it seems Russians tend to over-act.
I like English versions of TW1-2 more then any other and now I play them exclusively. It's interesting how an attitude toward some character may change depending on a voice acting. I really like Henselt, for example, due to a great voice acting, and I always regret when I get him killed.
Polish voices are great. I know English version by heart already, so I do not need subtitles, but I regret that I do not understand what they are literally saying.
