Wake up Samurai! (huh?)

OK, so obviously we all know what (in RL) a Samurai is. And we know it is the name of the fictional band.

But what does this colocolisim mean in the CP world? Is it the same as calling someone a choom? Or is there some more nuance to this honorific?

A Samurai is associated to follow a code of honor. In Cyberpunk worlds you can find "Street Samurai" or "Corpo Samurai" as people that fullfills their contracts without hesitation.
But Samurai is also associated with resistance to change in Japan late xix century, there was even a Samurai revolt (japanese forumers please jump to correct me,probably western pop culture distorting things here) in order to keep benefits and privileges.
Samurai members and public in Cyberpunk 2020,red,2077 are not priviliged high classes, but are people who are losing privileges(social benefits and such) and resisting to society changes (the tecno-shock)so I see a paralelism.

A samurai serves a japanese lord, the daimyo. In the world of Cyberpunk (both the game and the genre), it usually refers to people who serve as assassins or enforcers for megacorporations (corporate samurai) or street punks with a personal code of honor who fights tooth and nail against the system (street samurai). The latter should perhaps more accurately be called street ronin, since they serve no lords (corpos).

The band is more like RONIN than samurai.

I didn't like the name, the songs and MAINLY the screemo voice for a character like SILVERCRAP.

All the game we see keanu speaking like he was under effect of marijuana, slowly as shit, and when it comes to action he's the screemo guy?

I really don't understand this. Screemo reminds mostly a teenage thing, but somehow they thought it would fit.

not unlike Ozzy Osbourne who stutters when not singing. 🤣

It's catchy...

Truth is that the Samurai were the Lords of the Land. At least until they were wiped out for being.., Lords of the Land.
Developers seem to rest on topes and fads. It's just safer to play on the customers narrow understanding of the world by continuing to build the tracks they run on.....

Great post! Keep thinking you Players. Let the NPC's.., NPC.

I think the "samurai" thing was more about trying to stay true to the established world and motif of Cyberpunk 2020 than relying on tropes for the genre. I find that a lot of what was involved in real-life bushido culture is misunderstood or misinterpreted by those that are not from that background. (Including myself. I'm always uncovering new tidbits I never considered before.) However, most people I think will clearly understand the idea of a "samurai" being a leader and a warrior that follows a strict code of honor and is willing to die for their beliefs.

But for the purposes of the game, it's valid to utilize the misinterpretations of the ideal, as Night City is based on Western culture...not Eastern. I also think it's quite allusive, as it directly references a culture that was ultimately comprised of a small number of dedicated warriors who were willing to fight to the death against a new culture that (in the eyes of the samurai, at least,) had betrayed the core of who and what they were to indulge in technology, luxuries, and a lifestyle that would erase their way of life from existence. Compared to the "samurai" in CP2077, the parallels are almost touching each other.
