Was CDPR inspired by Red Dead Redemption for this game?

Despite not even belonging to the same "genre", it's striking how these two games feel similar to one another...Marston/Geralt, atmosphere, world design and activities, characterization... RDR is the only open world I can jump into after finishing Wild Hunt.

I do get a red dead feel when I'm pursuing on Roach, for sure. The atmosphere deff add's to the feeling of distress in the world. Very similar to red dead. I think it also has to do with the way the quest's are put together.

I bet so many games were inspired by Red Dead Redemption, especially this "open world" aspect. TW3 is fantastic with its enormous and detailed world but doesn't give the level of authenticity that RDR gives through the atmosphere, in my opinion. I mean the world "looks" real in TW3 with its incredible graphics and so on, but playing RDR there's just moment when you go "wow". When I think of RDR, it's the image of riding a horse through a vast desert which seems practically empty. Yet Rockstar made this process so realistic that I always feel compelled to explore more of the land.

I think great open world games compel you to explore more and new quests are acquired as a result, and DOESN"T give you the impression that this is some sort of "task" that I have to carry out to know more about the world. You know, like in Assassin's creed game, there are so many things to do you start picking what to do first. Yeah when you play a game first time you want to go out and discover things out of curiosity, but games like RDR and Skyrim give you that "first impression" even in second and third playthrough. The Witcher 3? Not so much, I think.

Skyrim and Assassin's creed having genuine, handcrafted and unique content? Please tell me, you're joking here.
As for the atmosphere and the level of authenticity to the world in comparison with RDR..I could not disagree more. If anything they've raised the bar from what Gothic(s) and RDR did in that regard while doing it on a much larger scale and within a more rich and varied setting.
The only thing what I would have liked to see from that game, is more of those moments with Marston riding along with a group on certain quests, like rescuing Bonny and the like...It made the world feel much more alive, it's characters more active and present in the story.
Apart from that, the only thing that buggs me is how crime system was handled...since Geralt has no thieving skills, they should have implemented a system that simply discourages thievery... higher prices, refusal of trade, no access to monster hunting quests or lower rewards, bounty hunters, people reacting to theft...rather than putting super overlevelled guards all over the place.

I believe they have stated in some interviews that they took inspiration from Red Dead Redemption. RDR is one of the best games ever made imo, so no wonder they would do that.

I wasn't talking about that, but what? They ARE handcrafted. Did you think those outfits in AC and dungeons in Skyrim are randomly generated? And yeah I'd say they are unique and genuine, although I'm not sure about your taste.

Thankfully it feels that they took more inspiration from Red Dead Redemption than Skyrim.

Red Dead is one of the two games I like more than Witcher 3, the other is Last of Us. I wish they would have taken even more from RDR, like the animation for skinning an animal. I know it would have gotten very repetitive, but they could have given an option to turn it off.

Im a big fan of RDR and cant fucking wait until number 2 comes out. And yes the games do look and feel alike, but witcher 3 is way better.

I think the landscape created by CDPR is on par with what Rockstar did with Red Dead. And that's saying a lot because Red Dead has some of the most amazing environments I've ever seen in a game. From a writing standpoint, there's no comparison. Red Dead is generic wild west. There isn't a single compelling character in that game, and the plot is pure rubbish.

Riding around on Roche certainly reminds me of RDR, wich is a good thing, and now that you mention it, Geralt and John really do share quite a few character traits. Both's personalities fit perfectly into their, quite similar, game world and did an excellent performance in general.

I personally would like the RDR franchise to go back a few years around the time of the civil war for example, but as long as they make another game I'll be more than satisfied either way.

I've heard this a lot, and each and every time I've wondered if the comparison is mainly because of the horse riding.

Sure, Redemption comes to mind, and I guess it has been an inspiration for the devs. But then again, there are so many games with horse riding implemented that existed long before Redemption. How about the original Red Dead Revolver for instance?

Anyone remember Gun?

Oh, and Shadow of the Colossus of course!

The original Assassin's Creed?

Bethesda being an inspiration? Well, if it was I don't see it.

And Bethesda and horses? Yeah....no.

Yea, there is certainly the RDR feel to The Witcher3, especially when on horseback. Not surprising, as I believe I read that the game designers had much inspiration from Clint Eastwood's gunfighter persona as "The Man with No Name" as well. I think they are Old West fans...who isn't right?

Off Topic; how I wish R* would come out with RDRII for the PC. I bought a PS3 a few years back solely for RDR and GTAV...never regretted it. Once I upgraded my PC (bought a new rig, monitor, flight stick...the whole kit) I sold my PS3, but still miss RDR, what a fantastic game.

Good day!

There has been a request to avoid RDR and W3 spoilers. Nothing so far has been too objectionable, but please avoid spoilers or use spoiler tags as requested.

Marston? Nah, Geralt is Big Boss (MGS) in an alternate universe! :)

I've also read that part of the development process Bethesda uses is to go back (near the end of development) to hand-place what they call "clutter". You know - all that truly useless junk that sits on every table and shelf in the world? Anything important is placed during the development of the level or area, but then the designers make another pass to put all the plates on the tables, the burned books, and all the wheels of cheese. Can't ever forget the cheese!

W3's areas are definitely more static - you can't pick up things by hand, you can't knock them about with physics. Once in a while I've seen a dead enemy go momentarily ragdoll and I can blast it around with Aard, but never very much. In Skyrim, you could throw goblets at random villagers. It was fun.

(Disclaimer: I once spent about a week collecting all the Skyrim cheese I could and storing it in one of my houses. I tried my best to stack them, but I think the physics engine eventually lost its mind. All the cheese would fall from the ceiling each time I came in the door. God, it was funny. We're so spoiled now with PS4 screenshots and video clips...)
