I felt my last post didn't really cover any of the positives in Watch Dogs so here are some of the things I love about the game, and which I feel are even revolutionary..
First off, there has simply never been a game of this scale and density in a seamless environment....ever! The game world is massive, the size of the buildings are true to life, and the world is densely populated. At any given time, there are hundreds of NPCs walking about or driving, especially during the day time.
And these NPCs have very dissimilar attributes. Take a walk in the park, and you'll see NPCs practicing martial arts, flying quadcopters, playing soccer, jogging, doing Tai Chi, landscaping. You'll see them taking pictures, selling and hawking their wares on the street, playing musical instruments, playing chess, having conversations etcetera..
There is so much variety in the A.I routines in this game that it's staggering. It really brings the game world to life... And the enemy A.I is pretty smart too. When you do these convoy takedown missions, you have to target a specific vehicle that's protected. If you go in guns blazing, expect to be killed in short order (unless you have a grenade launcher and some IEDs) as you will be outgunned, and the enemy A.I will flank you in a heartbeat and call for backup. So you have to plan the takedowns carefully, especially if you don't want to kill any civilians in the process.
Graphically Watch Dogs does not disappoint if you're playing on ultra settings, which are a significant upgrade over the console versions. I'm told the PS4 uses the equivalent of PC high settings, which still looks good. But ultra of course takes things quite a bit further by increasing the draw distance and level of detail substantially, improving the soft shadows, adding HBAO+ which is MILES better than the standard AO which the consoles get, and increasing the quality of the reflections and the water simulation..
As for textures, on ultra quality there is a very noticeable difference compared to high. Character or NPCs textures don't differ much between the two, but for environmental textures, the difference is substantial. So if your PC can handle it, I definitely recommend using ultra quality textures.
Physics is another area that Watch Dogs excels in, but not all around unfortunately. The game world has lots of simulation. Wind, vegetation, water, rain, weather, clouds, cloth etcetera.. But the driving mechanics are very arcadish and some of the environmental destruction effects are definitely downgraded from what we saw in the E3 2012 demo.
There is talk that a PhysX patch will be incoming though, so we'll see whether that changes anything. All in all, Watch Dogs is a truly awesome game, but it's stained by all the bugs and performance issues that should have been squashed in the 6 months extra Ubisoft had before it came to market.
