Ways to learn Chinese mandarin?

Hi,

Does anyone knows or used any decent learning software for Chinese mandarin? or other means to learn the basics. Rosetta stone is an option but it its cheap.

I have only studied at university so I can't give you much help there, but I can recommend an excellent (and free) Chinese dictionary app called Pleco. If you are planning to learn Chinese, Pleco is a great dictionary because it lets you draw hanzi to look it up, or lets you take a photo of hanzi and then it will try to identify it. It also has the pronunciation of things in pinyin which is helpful.
