I'd argue that even then it's worth it. If you're used to reading while on the road, obviously you could fit a printed book in somewhere so far - so it shouldn't be a problem to take an e-reader along instead.I think it depends on your reading habits. If you read while (for example) travelling to work, then using a multi-purpose device may be a lot more practical. If you read mainly at home, then go for the dedicated eReader.
But it really depends on personal preference - what kind of compromise you're willing to make and how long your commute is. E.g. for short trips to the city or to university, I don't take my Kindle along, either. It's too short to get any actual book-reading done anyway, so it's just the news or comics on my smartphone. But whenever I'd consider reading a book, I'd rather take an e-reader along than using another device for the purpose.
