I think it depends on your reading habits. If you read while (for example) travelling to work, then using a multi-purpose device may be a lot more practical. If you read mainly at home, then go for the dedicated eReader.

I'd argue that even then it's worth it. If you're used to reading while on the road, obviously you could fit a printed book in somewhere so far - so it shouldn't be a problem to take an e-reader along instead.
But it really depends on personal preference - what kind of compromise you're willing to make and how long your commute is. E.g. for short trips to the city or to university, I don't take my Kindle along, either. It's too short to get any actual book-reading done anyway, so it's just the news or comics on my smartphone. But whenever I'd consider reading a book, I'd rather take an e-reader along than using another device for the purpose.

I wish all physical books would just start coming with a code for the digital format included. Similar to how movies have taken the trend of bundling the dvd with the bluray and a digital code.

Yes! Absolutely! Just as you get Autorip for CDs and digital copies of movies.

I get about 20 hours of reading time from my 1st-gen iPad, which is used only for reading. It's good enough for everything except a long trip. But I would expect to get a lot more than that from a Kindle.

You must be really lucky, my first gen Ipad never got through a single book without needing a recharge.
And since I usually read 2-3 books in a single weekend, so the Ipad was really annoying. E-book readers last long, like wake up start reading -> fall asleep reading and still charge left.

That would be the best. Going for a trip and don't have space for your book in the bag? Just hook up the file on your eReader.. done deal :D

This :D There are some books I wouldn't like to read in eBook version, like the Song of Ice and Fire series, I really want to actually have those , and I just found the Witcher books a week ago in a store here, which I think I'll also get like that.

I said that :D
Don't know, too much electronic and digital things nowadays and I don't like it...I want my books to be the books, not some pdf, epub or whatnot...I like to look at them on shelf, to clean dust from time to time....Every book I own have a small history, a little story...Inheritance from grandfather, some special gift, nice memories...For example, few years ago I traveled almost 500km to buy Tower of Swallow and Lady of the Lake... ;)

And what e-books have? Downloading? Meh...
Oh well they are good if you are searching for out-of-print books (as I said before I'll use e-reader mostly for that...) I have to admit that I'll use it to try a couple of books I'm not conviced to buy...
And yeah for me paper always wins, reading, as an action, is the same with a physical or a digital book, but the feeling... well... we know. ;)
E-reader have the mighty power to let you read books you cannot find neither in a second hand market.

Of course there are books which I would never, and never, read in epub format, and since you mentioned them... yes like Witcher books. Speaking of which, I'll go to the bookstore and pre order The Tower of The Swallow (2 weeks left).
Hope we'll get to know when Lady of the Lake will come out since the publisher made a surprise and decided that Lady of the Lake will come out this year too (I can't still believe it, really).

But anyway, paper ftw. ;)

LOL. The problem I have going back to paper books is that I keep glancing at the top of the page to see what time it is. For some reason, they never give me an answer.

The last time I read a paper book was just over a year ago. We'd had a three-day power outage, and, like everyone else, on Day 3 I went to the Starbucks in a mall that had a generator so that I could charge up. I bought a book to read while they were charging, because it would have been too slow to read and charge at the same time.

Get a tiny projector, aim it at the top of the page, make it show the time and make sure you don't move the book around too much - problem solved

That was my first idea, too, but then I realised you'd have to move the watch over the page each time you turn pages. That just sounds like too much work to me...

In that case, I guess I could just look at my watch?

Well, yeah, but it wouldn't be at the top of the page, where you said you look instincively. Duh.

So yesterday it was my birthday and my bf decided to gift me an e book reader, and so it begins: my entry into the world of digital reading. Using it mostly to read out-of-print books.

I was rather happy.

It's treacherous outside. The snow has turned into an icy slush, and I live on a hill. I may need to get my wellies out tomorrow, if it doesn't melt.

@SephiraV Apologies for being late about this, just going to wish a happy "late" birthday.
Would have thought of something clever to say, but it is not my day.
