@Kinley just ate 10 000 (ten thousand!) hot cakes in his lifteime! That's freakin' a lot, even for a bear, cut down on it

Seriously though, i think this is the highest in the forums ( not including the RED devs), and imo earned every bit of it, congrats m8!

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had offer to take on a new job.
They confirmed last Thursday they would hire me, which would mean I would earn basically the same amount of money as I had been earning in my current job, but with a higher probability of making a nice career out of it. But then on Friday my current bosses offered quite the raise for me to stay... Damn, it´s getting hard to decide what to do!

Aw, thanks Toto! <3

Thank you! You're not so far behind yourself. :)

Now if only I could buy something with these points...

Everyone is good in one's matter... you keep people civilized and I keep people laughing (with and of me ;))... or something like :p

You know money isn't everything and it can't buy personal satisfaction, so keep that in mind! It's better to do something you like and that pays well enough than living the modern American dream, being a slave to a job you hate and not having enough time to enjoy your fat check.

Now if you could really get the job you like to pay more... Or at least a little more.

If I may ask, how different is this new job? You are/were teaching, right?

Yeah, that´s why it´s so hard to decide. If I´d found myself in this situation a couple of years ago, I´d taken the new job without any doubt. But as a married man I have to consider what´s best for my family. My money is not my own anymore... it´s our money now.

It´s not that I hate my current job. It´s more that I feel kind of stagnant here, with no true projection, no professional growth. I´ve been here for 5 years, and I found it good to learn a lot about the office, but I´m craving for something more likely to offer better career opportunities.
When my current bosses made the raise offer, they mentioned some "plans" they had for me, in order for me to develop inside the company. But it´s not the first time they mention those plans... I still have to see them come to be.

I do teach chemistry at the local university, but as a secondary, little-time, low-pay activity. For my main job I currently work at a pharmaceutical company, partly as formulation developer, partly as supervisor of IP issues (patents and stuff).
The new job would be as an IP consultant with an expertise in chemical and pharmaceutical affairs within an IP consulting firm. It would allow me to specialize in an area where I think I could have a good career.

For the time being, I made an appointment with the general manager of the new job for tomorrow, when we´ll discuss the situation. At least it wasn´t a sound "no"!

I see, and I do understand. As a married man myself I sympathize. If you discuss it as a couple I think you'd both agree that spending time together and not being grumpy or stressed all the time is worth more than money :) But sadly the way things are moving in most countries force us to make certain compromises, since everything revolves around money (and control).

One thing to consider is: if you move to a new place you like more, but where you start with a comparatively lower salary, how would that change in the middle to short term? Within 5 years, how much would you be making at the new place compared to the old place where they only offered you a raise not to lose you? Also consider additional benefits, such as medical insurance, retirement fund, access to preferential loans or whatever from an employees fund and so on.

Good luck though, sounds difficult.

Beware of empathetic looks, from people thinking you must be in chemotherapy or otherwise sick in some way. Happened surprisingly often when I went from full metalhead to shorn to 3mm during my school time. :facepalm2:

Also: Why would you betray the brotherhood of beards so? :skepticalzoltan:

I kind of imagined something like that might happen. I wear a hat outside though, don't want to get sunburnt. I'll let you know if anything funny (or otherwise) happens.

I betrayed the brotherhood of beards for purely cosmetic reasons. I took pictures for my legal documents (for Germany) and didn't want to look older than I am. Might grow it back for the winter maybe... How are beards perceived in Germany?

Thanks for the talk. There´s a lot a of stuff to take into account.
Let´s see how tomorrow´s interview goes. I hope it´ll make the decision easier!

Don't know for the rest of the people here, but I can tell you my view on that matter: If a man's beard is all nice grown and well looked after, it can help to make this man's appearance more mature, but not necessarily older.

I like beards.

With the eyes, mainly. :wisegirl:

(There's quite a trend towards full beards among the hipster variety of young men at the moment, at least that's my impression. I myself oscillate between clean-shaven and few-days-stubble.)

Well, they do seem to be quite fashionable, again, lately. At least among the younger folks. Everything from a bit of stubble on the chin to full beards is seen a lot more often than a couple of years ago.
In general, I don't think there's any particularly positive or negative stance towards beards as long as they're well-groomed. Just a matter of personal preference - personally I did get a lot of positive comments on my beard. It might be that in some lines of business, beards are frowned upon and employees might be strongly advised to keep them short, very well-groomed or preferably non-existent (e.g. banking), but that's rare, I think.

I did get insulted over my beard once, but that was just a latently racist fool making an idiot of himself. On my way home from sword training (with my bagged sword on my back), a middle-aged man approached me and asked "Hehe, already practicing how to chop heads of, are we?" - obviously referencing IS activity in the Middle East which was all over media at the time and basically accusing me of being a terrorist because of my beard - before walking straight on and off the train.

They sound like a jerk. You should have given him a scary look and said "I only chop off the heads of strange people that talk to me"
