Well I found myself today with the rather unpleasant prospect of potentially having Ankylosing spondylitis. My brother was just diagnosed and since it a genetic disease it seems likely I could have it as well.

Sigh..just fucking awesome.

That's a bummer. I'm sorry for your brother.

It's a predisposition to AS (you'll also see "Spondyloarthritis", "Sa" in medical literature) that's genetic. If a close relative has it, you may also have the predisposition. That does not mean you will get it; the expression of the gene involved ("HLA-B27") and the consequences are regulated by other factors.

Despite having a good animal model for it, they don't have any treatment other than the ordinary ones for arthritis yet. The best relief is still exercise: "motion is lotion".

Sorry to hear that, Costin. Spinal problems are shit (I can tell from experience, since I have lower back disk hernia).

That said, Guy is right, you only have a predisposition. And proper exercise can really help you avoid any problems.
Don´t get too down over this, it´ll be only worse, I can tell you. Just go on doing healthy exercise, and not forcing your back if you can avoid it.

Sometimes I feel the only thing doctors are capable of saying whenever the fuck they don't know how to handle a disease is recommend exercise. See also ADHD, which I have. Now I know exercise does make you healthier, but it's really a very broad solution.

But thanks guys.

I should give GW2 another try. Last time I played it in Wine performance was horrible so I didn't even advance anywhere beyond the tutorial level. May be newer versions improved it.

:crybaby: 10 GB would be 3 days for me what with CAPS (525 MB per 24 hours) and all but I do have "free time" from 2 - 7 AM which is when I do all my downloading . Thankfully Steam has included a timer which I use . Before that I had to use task manager to start Steam .

That's a terrible ISP you got there. This whole caps business is a complete rip off.

@Costin, I hope the desease ignore your nucleotides and pass by. Sorry for your brother. And yes, exercise and balanced diet, ie eat anything without abusing anything (with exceptions, of course) is the best prescription without unwanted side effects.

I know it seems like a superficial, formulaic recommendation. But for arthritis, it is not just that and not just a "broad solution", it is the single most important thing you can do. It helps your body resist and overcome the damage done by arthritis better than anything else you can take or do.

The principle is this: your back is supported not just by the vertebrae and the joints between them, but also by your "core" musculature (the erector spinae, gluteus, abdominals and others). These act to well-distribute and relieve the load on those vulnerable joints. Strength in these muscles minimizes preventable degeneration and minimizes the effects of inevitable degeneration such as you get with diseases like AS.

So, is anyone up for pics of your local areas? Well here's a couple from the Northern Irish city of Lisburn where I was today (in case you are wondering, Lisburn is the place next to Belfast and I went there because I wanted to get out of the house for a bit).
