That's a bummer. I'm sorry for your brother.Well I found myself today with the rather unpleasant prospect of potentially having Ankylosing spondylitis. My brother was just diagnosed and since it a genetic disease it seems likely I could have it as well.
Sigh..just fucking awesome.
It's a predisposition to AS (you'll also see "Spondyloarthritis", "Sa" in medical literature) that's genetic. If a close relative has it, you may also have the predisposition. That does not mean you will get it; the expression of the gene involved ("HLA-B27") and the consequences are regulated by other factors.
Despite having a good animal model for it, they don't have any treatment other than the ordinary ones for arthritis yet. The best relief is still exercise: "motion is lotion".
