I tried the first Age of Wonders recently and I was very impressed! I always like the strategy and planning phase of this sort of games but dislike real time massive encounters; I like being able to plan ahead before I click and micro manage. While I can appreciate the complexity of large scale battles I like to pace myself and deliberate on my decisions.
Age of Wonders fuses a top layer of tactical movement and management similar to King's Bounty with turn based, *unit* driven combat similar to turn based RPG's. Some things I don't like about King's Bounty and similar games is battles usually take place in tiny grids and there are minimal to no positional advantages or disadvantages. It boils down to inflicting and resisting damage. Also it's easy to overpower enemies simply by having larger armies, which is kind of lame. AoW's turn based combat is very similar to traditional cRPG's like, say, Fallout, where each character has unique abilities and their own movement and attack points.
From what I saw, AoW 3 looks pretty awesome, even if I am not a long time fan of that particular genre.
But that's enough about games. This is the tavern.
