As it turns out, the situation with the weather is here much, much worse than I thought - the south is entirely flooded, there are lots of people dying, many have gone missing. It's terrible. To make it worse, the floods in Bosnia moved entire active mine fields and now there are mines just floating about and nobody knows where. Just the fact the mines hadn't been removed in 20+ years is pretty horrifying, now this... ugh.

On the more facepalm-worthy side, BBC listed the news under "Africa" (they fixed it, but you can see the link above still says Africa). Then, fans of the two opposing football teams united (GASP!) to go and help rescue people from the floods. Unfortunately, they got too drunk on the way there and their buses had to return.

The rains here have stopped and it's pretty warm outside, so here's hoping the disaster ends soon.

Yeah, that's the most terrifying piece of news I've heard. The whole situation is making me angry, to be honest (apparently the floods had been predicted and people warned, yet the government did not prepare for when it hit... ugh, but I'll keep the politics out of it.) I'm fine, no floods or anything near where I live.

When will it end though? The cycles of floods in this are are well known but the measures taken are simply not sufficient.

It will never truly end ever, but as you pointed out, we need better measures. Which also isn't likely to happen by the look of things. Sadly, we won't know until it happens again.

Fucking hell I feel for you and your countrymen Dona, bloody landmines are evil and a real pain to get rid of, though there's been some advances in recent years i'm told. Expensive though.

In flooding here over chrimbo a lot of folk blamed the lack of dredging for exacerbating the flooding, governments simply stopped doing that ten years ago or so, though with your far more dramatic landscape I expect that wouldn't really be effective.

3,000 landslides(1,000 in Serbia), three months of rain in just days, and an estimated 120,000 unexploded landmines which could cause both horrendous internal and international incidents.

FUCKING A', that is gods awful, Dona. Here's to you and your people's safety.

I really appreciate the sentiments, guys, thank you. I live up North, so I'm pretty safe, no reason to worry. <3

That's good to hear Dona, so then let's hope your fellow serbians will be fine. This is something right out of a B movie, unbelievable.

Are you using FreeBSD, @Glaroug? That was my system of choice for a while.

@.Volsung. I am. Looks to be my os at least until the TW3 for Linux arrives :p . The ports system is really cool, sort of what I imagine gentoo to be like.

FreeBSD makes compiling packages from source really easy, the ports system is really wonderful. I don't think Gentoo is on that level, but for Linux it's OK :p FreeBSD I believe has some of the longest uptimes recorded, some reaching years, and allegedly has the fastest TCP stack which M$ also allegedly grabbed and adapted in part to Windows without proper credit.

I stopped using it because back then (don't know if it's still an issue) ports would be more updated than binary packages (tgz) and I would have to download and compile everything. I had enough of that at school and work. Also upgrading the core system and kernel didn't seem too straightforward. But seriously, FreeBSD made Linux look slightly disorganized. Oh and setting up servers with FreeBSD is a bliss. I remember we had a test computing cluster running FreeBSD, it was pretty cool :)

Do you still have to go through a manual installation, and create a bunch of old school Unix style partitions with letters?

By the way you should know FreeBSD has packages that add binary compatibility with Linux, so maybe after messing with some libs you might be able to run any Linux program.
