Aye, others do exist. I'm part of the Sui Generis forums (a game currently in development by Bare Mettle Entertainment). Since Sui Generis will be Bare Mettle's first release they are practically unknown as of yet. The community on their forums is quite small because of this but it is very well behaved and needs almost no moderation. Topics are discussed in a mature and in-depth manner on those forums. It's a rather unique and refreshing thing to see on the internet so, needless to say, I spend a great deal of time on those forums. In the two years that I've been a member of the SG forums I have nearly as many posts as I have here, and I've been member here for over seven years. Though to be fair, I've been alpha/beta testing early versions of Sui Generis so much of my discussion is directly with the developers. I'm sure if I had been testing The Witcher games I'd have many more posts than I currently do.

The Bare Mettle team shares many of the ideals that CDPR does (anti-DRM, free DLC instead of nickel-and-diming customers, focused on creating an immersive and believable low fantasy world instead of high fantasy, etc.). The main difference I've seen between those forums and The Witcher forums is that the devs are a lot more active on the Sui Generis forums :).

That was the only other forum I could think of at least a fairly active international one. I read in it a couple of times. Sadly I only have access to the public one. Are you part of the private forums?

Anyone serious about what they do will want to put out their best possible work.

In the case of videogames, they're complex collaborative multimedia efforts, a system made up of many subsystems, big sprockets, small sprockets, mid sized sprockets, teensy tiny sprockets, hopefully all working together in harmony. Some devs dedicate themselves to one of these smaller cogs, typography, even though the average gamer won't consciously notice it, let alone drop a word of gratitude or reprimand on the forums. These devs are also aware the system isn't fully mechanical: perfect typography won't ever salvage it should big cogs like Story or Combat be compromised, nor, conversely, will terrible type ever jam the whole thing on its own. But these devs will want to deliver the best possible typography nonetheless.

Human beings have highly developed analytical skills, the honed ability to zoom in on an aspect, extract it from its context and dissect it apart. It's quite helpful but also quite telling: most of the times we lack the mental apparatus to tackle complex systems full on so we're forced to break them down into more digestible chunks. That's exactly what the forum does in threads dedicated to Geralts's complexion, Ciri's heels, or typography. I don't think most contributing members need to be reminded of the relative little importance of these aspects, how these cogs fare in the grand scheme of things. It's all implicit, a given they're small. That's why hardly anyone feels the need to preface the discussion with a lengthy exposé offering proper context or ever deems them system-jamming. The forum is simply setting context aside for the moment, zooming in on the sprocket and dissecting it in the hopes any progress on it will translate into a better system performance.

The nitpicking accusation is thus hollow. It's devoid from content. Saying nothing about the issue at hand other than pointing out its unimportance, that it's a small cog in a big clock, when no one claimed otherwise, how helpful is that observation to devs in charge of it? Of no good, whatsoever.

I cannot think of more fitting closing remarks than a wonderful quote from James Fellici. Originally, it's a piece of advice meant for typographers, but I deem it a wonderful motto both for anyone serious about what they do and anyone serious about what they discuss:

Oh I am not really sure if you understood, but I was merely joking.

I understand that accusations of nitpicking bother you more that others. I could not agree more with what you've just explained. Well, to be honest, mostly. I do not mind posts that "accuse" people of nitpicking. Well not as much as you do. They simply show some people's need to point out, that we should give the developers a break.

Now this doesn't mean that the developers can't handle all that criticism, or that it is not helpful. It is. And they can handle it, and decide what is helpful to them and what is not. It's just that people sometimes focus on the negatives, and completely forget about the positives. Sometimes, the developer needs to hear that yes, he did a great job overall, but as expected, not perfect. In my opinion, that is what the "nitpicking accusation" posts are trying to say. Mostly.

Anyway, I was simply joking around looking for a reaction. Hope you got that. :p

What we were talking about though, is this community's will to dissect the system as you say. We pay attention to every detail. And we were wondering if other communities are like that as well. Apparently, my impression is that they are not. What I think is that, when you look into communities based around smaller franchises, thus smaller communities, you are more likely to see that "feedback machine". The Witcher Forum has been like that so far. If you take a look at bigger communities, say like CA, this is somehow lost. There are simply too many people. Rules start being fuzzy. This also might be attributed to the average age of the forum users.

That being said, I do admit that I do not have much experience of other gaming communities. It's just my impression that I'm putting forward.

Yes, I am :). The developers created the insider forum as a way to directly communicate with backers of the game more freely. It is also used for discussion of early alpha/beta builds and to get feedback on the game.

Too bad, I an't get access to the insider forum, cause won't back games through kickstarter. Good to hear the impression was right. Make sure they make a great game for me to buy when it comes out! :D

I've backed only two games that were on Kickstarter, SG being one of them. However, you can actually back the game directly on their site. It is a great way to support such an innovate and unique game and you'll also get the game for much cheaper by doing so than waiting till post release. Most people who have access to the early builds agree that even the early alpha/beta versions are better than many AAA titles currently on the market. I've been playing/testing it since March when they released the first version. I've spent at least 200+ hours already in the game so I'd say I definitely got my moneys worth even though the game isn't even out yet ;).

The game is already amazing (the alpha/beta builds I've played) and it's getting better with every release. The game is truly next gen and not just because of graphics but because it's creating new mechanics and innovative RPG elements which haven't been done before. It's one of the few games I'm truly excited about :).

Don't worry.

I got you were kidding. My remark was more in the general vicinity. But even if you weren't kidding, why would there be a problem?! Man, you've got to own up your posts! For example, I use @Kinley and @EmperorZorn for target practicing my bantering skills on. I mean, I hope they're ok with it, but if they're not, heck, too bad!

Them Romanians and Germans are too uptight anyway and then they either lash out against a perfectly good ranged weapon or turn into fortune cookie writers.

*rimshot*

On topic then, my impression is TES' community is akin to TW's in that respect but moderation works differently over there.

I agree, @StaGiors . Never be on the defensive, that's my life motto.

Someone misunderstood you? Screw it! Attack them more for not following!

Apologies and explanations are a weakness.

@freakie1one Sounds really good. If I ould only get my physical copy in the end. :)
Do you know if there are any plans for a new public video? Maybe I will think about buying it already... But if we want to talk further about it, there is a dedicated thread already. ;)

I will be receiving two digital copies and a physical copy upon release (I opted for the physical collector's edition). Sadly these were limited in number since the devs will be creating the physical copies themselves and not going through a distributor or publisher. However, it's possible that post release a physical copy will be available for purchase (this has been discussed on the insider forum and the devs said it's too early for a definite answer).

Once the developers remove the NDA I'm sure there will be thousands of videos popping up soon. They said this will likely happen sometime during the prelude alpha/beta testing. I personally have several hundred gameplay videos I recorded but can't share them until the NDA is lifted. I'm sure they'll release a public video once the prelude version is released to announce it :).

And you are correct, there is a more appropriate place to discuss this game. With that being said (and since this is the Hairy Bear)... bottoms up!

*Cheers*
