Well it's silly if you use random phrases to anybody. Since japanese people have a distinct way of addressing people. You'd use different words that mean the same thing if it's to a younger or older person. A female or a male, etc. It's a matter of how you address people from what I learned. Using words you picked up from anime would sound pretty weird if it's not the right time, place or person or the way you should speak. Still, I wonder why they don't speak like they speak in anime. I mean it's japanese right? It's not like they invented a whole new japanese language just for the sake of having an animation language?

Yeah it's definitely still Japanese but the key difference between most anime Japanese and real life Japanese is that in anime, people are incredibly rude to one another. Calling each other お前 (omae) and using plain form (impolite Japanese) towards elders or people they've only just met. In real life, when you meet someone for the first time in Japan you use honorific language or at the very least the です・ます (desu/masu) form because otherwise it makes you seem like you don't respect them which is super rude. And using omae is like 2 levels of rudeness because 1) it's a rude way of saying 'you' and 2) it's rude to use 'you' anyway in Japanese, names should be used instead.

BUT the reason they speak like this in anime is because it's entertaining. When you are joking with your friends or whatever, you speak like that because it's comedic and just like in English, people are mean to the ones they love. But to total strangers, if you spoke like that, you would cause serious offence.

So true. It's a very different usage, which is ironic in some ways considering how polite the people are. And I'll second that anime is a very poor source to try and learn Japanese from except for some very basic words or phrases. I really should do some brush up lessons so that I don't get completely rusty with it.

Anime isn't good if it's your only means of learning Japanese. In reality, Japanese people hardly (if ever) speak like they do in shonen anime. For slice of life anime they're more realistic, but nobody talks like the characters from Naruto or One Piece, for example.

But that doesn't mean to say you can't learn useful things from it. When I watch anime I learn useful things from time to time. And I'm sure if you can say a few Japanese phrases from anime, it will make Japanese people laugh (in a good way).

But, Do you often read mangas, in Japanese? It's pretty cool since all Kanjis are translated into Hiraganas, but it's still too difficult for my poor level x)
For my defense I have read Urashima Taro's story in Japanese (1 day to decrypt it, 2 days to understand it), and I'm pretty proud of myself xD
Literary Japanese must really be a pain in the .. hum.. to understand and translate.. And Translating English into Japanese... *Remembers Latin Class in middle-high...* NOPE NOPE NOPE!
It's pretty courageous, You should be proud of yourself for studying such a difficult language!

The two hardest things I find with Japanese is:
1) Kanji - there are 1000 'commonly' used characters and would be seen in something like a newspaper. And some of them have multiple readings. But then there are more than that. Still not quite as bad as Chinese though. The reason you see hiragana next to the kanji is so that kids can still read it while they are learning kanji. It's useful if you are trying to learn to read it and want to see the kanji in use, but still be able to figure out the reading of it. But I'm lazy and don't read it in Japanese. :p
2) Learning to speak 'backwards' - it's like talking like Yoda. The structure takes a lot of getting used to.

Yes I love reading manga in Japanese. Having the furigana there is really useful because it means I can look up kanji much faster. Although I do look forward to the day that I can read manga without needing to look up words.
That's amazing you managed to read a book in Japanese though! I'm not sure I could do that honestly... it wouldn't be fun at all. At the moment my reading level is still like... 12 year old Japanese level... I still have so far to go.
But thank you for your kind words :)

Kanji is the bane of my life I hate it so much. But without kanji Japanese would be impossible so I need it. I can't quit this toxic relationship I have with kanji.
But on the brightside, my kanzen master kanji n2 textbook arrived today, so I will be using that to study, which hopefully will help.
And regarding 2) learning the sentence grammar is kind of a pain at first but after a year or so (esp. after living in the country) you get used to it and it feels very natural. Sometimes I even catch myself accidentally thinking in Japanese or thinking in English but using Japanese sentence structure. Very weird.

Hmpf apparently it wasn't the mainboard that was dying on me...

After hours of back-ups, formating harddrives and carefully installing a monstrous cooling in a new case. The PC did shit, gave me the 5 beeps of your CPU is toast. So everything back on the old board aaannnndddd five beeps of the CPU is really toast.

Cleaned the cpu carefully and damn tiny little dark spots seem to have burned in.
And with the weekend so close that means a new CPU probably wont arrive till next week. SO either rip another PC appart for a week or stick to a laptop... I'm already bored..

Speaking of waiting for things. I ordered parts for a new system earlier this week. Have to say this is worse than torture, the waiting is killing me.

Good grief this day. I had to run back and forth from University to my house, 3 times. Anyway. I'm getting free dinner tonight. HA!

Have I missed anything important?
