Yeah it's definitely still Japanese but the key difference between most anime Japanese and real life Japanese is that in anime, people are incredibly rude to one another. Calling each other お前 (omae) and using plain form (impolite Japanese) towards elders or people they've only just met. In real life, when you meet someone for the first time in Japan you use honorific language or at the very least the です・ます (desu/masu) form because otherwise it makes you seem like you don't respect them which is super rude. And using omae is like 2 levels of rudeness because 1) it's a rude way of saying 'you' and 2) it's rude to use 'you' anyway in Japanese, names should be used instead.Well it's silly if you use random phrases to anybody. Since japanese people have a distinct way of addressing people. You'd use different words that mean the same thing if it's to a younger or older person. A female or a male, etc. It's a matter of how you address people from what I learned. Using words you picked up from anime would sound pretty weird if it's not the right time, place or person or the way you should speak. Still, I wonder why they don't speak like they speak in anime. I mean it's japanese right? It's not like they invented a whole new japanese language just for the sake of having an animation language?

BUT the reason they speak like this in anime is because it's entertaining. When you are joking with your friends or whatever, you speak like that because it's comedic and just like in English, people are mean to the ones they love. But to total strangers, if you spoke like that, you would cause serious offence.
But, Do you often read mangas, in Japanese? It's pretty cool since all Kanjis are translated into Hiraganas, but it's still too difficult for my poor level x)Anime isn't good if it's your only means of learning Japanese. In reality, Japanese people hardly (if ever) speak like they do in shonen anime. For slice of life anime they're more realistic, but nobody talks like the characters from Naruto or One Piece, for example.
But that doesn't mean to say you can't learn useful things from it. When I watch anime I learn useful things from time to time. And I'm sure if you can say a few Japanese phrases from anime, it will make Japanese people laugh (in a good way).

For my defense I have read Urashima Taro's story in Japanese (1 day to decrypt it, 2 days to understand it), and I'm pretty proud of myself xD
Literary Japanese must really be a pain in the .. hum.. to understand and translate.. And Translating English into Japanese... *Remembers Latin Class in middle-high...* NOPE NOPE NOPE!
It's pretty courageous, You should be proud of yourself for studying such a difficult language!
Yes I love reading manga in Japanese. Having the furigana there is really useful because it means I can look up kanji much faster. Although I do look forward to the day that I can read manga without needing to look up words. But, Do you often read mangas, in Japanese? Kanji is the bane of my life I hate it so much. But without kanji Japanese would be impossible so I need it. I can't quit this toxic relationship I have with kanji. The two hardest things I find with Japanese is:
1) Kanji - there are 1000 'commonly' used characters and would be seen in something like a newspaper. And some of them have multiple readings. But then there are more than that. Still not quite as bad as Chinese though. The reason you see hiragana next to the kanji is so that kids can still read it while they are learning kanji. It's useful if you are trying to learn to read it and want to see the kanji in use, but still be able to figure out the reading of it. But I'm lazy and don't read it in Japanese.
2) Learning to speak 'backwards' - it's like talking like Yoda. The structure takes a lot of getting used to.
Oh I read the Children Album book! That's amazing you managed to read a book in Japanese though! I'm not sure I could do that honestly... it wouldn't be fun at all. At the moment my reading level is still like... 12 year old Japanese level... I still have so far to go.
But thank you for your kind words![]()
What What What! What is that?
