What Am I Doing Wrong?

Bought The Witcher 2 the other day and have been playing it off and on. I really like the idea, setting, and storyline so far, but I'm having a problem with the learning curve. I can't explain it, but I don't do so well in combat.

I know the Silver Swords are best VS monsters. I know the quick attack and the strong attack, I know the black/parry/counter system, I know the roll ability, and I know the magic system.

Basically I use the Quen sign before a fight, and if I have the ingredients/potions I add oil to make my blade better, and drink any potions that benefit me. That's how I prepare.

In battle... I don't think I understand how combat works. I try to attack, but someone else is attacking me while I attack someone else. I'm not sure why, but I have a hard time positioning Geralt to face the attacker to black an attack. Rolling works, only to get away, but I always get in the same predicament as before. Anyone have a good tutorial video showing me how to fight better (NOT a video on how to prepare).

I think you should practice in arena, its the best way to understand combat, leveling system, alchemy etc and you should try Full combat rebalance(a mod that makes combat moore responsive)

Already been in the arena, same problems, but better upon higher levels.

No mods, I got 360.

If you get the parrying ability from the Training skill tree (which you can get pretty fast), you can block attacks from every side. So you don't have to face the enemy to block their attacks. You should try to hit an enemy fast, and roll away or block as soon as you are in danger of getting hit. I can also recommend you to upgrade the Aard sign to level 2 (it's the first at the top of the Magic skill tree), which if used gives you some breathing space.

Try to seperate enemies from each other by using Aard and Yrden.

This thread is about hints for TW2, so I'm going to move it to the correct forum.

You need to avoid getting surrounded. There is no quicker way to end up dead than to get in the middle of a crowd of enemies and be hit in the back. Monsters and enemy NPCs aren't very bright, but they're bright enough to gang up on you this way.

Use the terrain, your speed, and signs (Aard and Yrden) to separate multiple enemies. When you get one isolated, kill him quickly so you can get back to evading and breaking up the others.

Use bombs to kill or incapacitate crowds too large to take on directly. Dancing Star is so effective for this it ought to be illegal. Use mind control to get opponents too dangerous to take on in twos or threes to fight each other (Axii sign; Red Haze bomb).

You could try to lower the difficulty, also in combat you will have to roll a lot of times especially if you are playing on hard/dark/insane. Try to use aard before attacking an enemy that will parry(with a shield or heavy armored). Always keep yourself out of combat (with rolling) if you are out of vigor, try out other specs too, the 'mage' spec becomes very nice once you upgrade the igni sign to level 2. Imo there is no such thing as 1 way to go, playstyles just make your own characteristics shine, so experiment as much as you can :)

Perfect advice. I personally think Yrden is very underrated as it's one of the best ways to isolate dangerous enemies.

Quen made Witcher 2 way too easy.

Lower the difficulty. On Easy enemy shields do not block damage at all, and damage received is practically non-existent. If you want higher difficulties, then use bombs. A crap-load of bombs will get you through every non-boss fight even on Dark. Bombs are like cheats, and they involve less than rolling around, using signs, and other more complicated strategies.

Fighting is easy in this game.... You just have to stab and roll a lot... If enemies are blocking your attacks than roll behind them and stab with heavy attack or kite them into that ground trap sign and then slash them with heavy attacks... Also use quen a lot... Ard, Igni and that mind control signs are kinda weak imo... The only potion that u really have to use is the one regenerating hp.
Just learn to roll backwards... And don't let enemies hit u in the back or u will get one shotted without position talent at higher difficulties. Also take Feet work talents asap.

Everybody has different advice :)

I like to Aard followed immediately by a slash. The stunning of aard stops your enemy from attacking. I hardly ever block, reposte or use bombs or knives. I always max out on the potions used. I spend nearly the whole game on a potion. I make sure that I promo the alchemist's tree so that the potions last long and their negative effects are reduced to nearly zero. There is one potion that can double your hp, and others that increase your attack strength considerably. I only use Quen in desperation.

I beat the game on dark mode several times, and I didn't bother getting the dark armor (except on the first dark mode playthrough to see what it looks like). I don't consider myself a particularly talented gamer.

Get that talent in Training that allows you to parry from all directions. Get the ability for throwing knives as well, more toys, the better. Until you get the talent for Sword AoE/Igni AoE, bombs are your best bet for dealing with crowds. Get one point in Harvester to get more components quickly. If there's distance between you and the enemy, you can pepper them with knives. I prefer bombs though, since you can get it with alchemy. You can make more, while throwing daggers require to go back to town - not always a viable option. When a large group approaches you, roll, and toss a bomb. Shielded enemies might take some more effort, so if you can, get Riposte and use it at every opportunity (particularly 1 on 1 situations). It unlocks an ability that gives you at chance to do an automatic Riposte on blocking. Also, set them on fire, if you can.

just try to hit and run
you do some strikes and then avoid
level up the "avoid distance" makes it a lot easier, too.
if you learning the avoid/strike thing you will get into the combat

its not depending on leveling talents if you master the combat system tho
