What are the best settings for a smooth 60fps constant on a 980 + 4690K rig?

Getting quite pissed off, nothing seems to guarantee a solid 60fps (vsync on).

Hairworks on + Fully ultra (shadows and Foliage on high)
  • 60fps constant roaming woods
  • dips to 50-55fps in random ass areas (empty ones, like the place you meet Letho for example, that place fucking tanks my FPS)
  • 74fps average with Vsync off
  • 50-55fps in Novigrad
  • 50-55fps fighting bears etc
  • Dips as low as fucking 35fps when zoomed into geralts head

Hairworks off + Fully Ultra (everything)
  • 60 fps constant
  • dips to fucking 45-50fps in random ass areas (same area as above)
  • 65-70fps average vsync off
  • 50fps in Novigrad
  • 58-60fps fighting bears etc

Hairworks off + Foliage on high
  • 60fps constant
  • dips to 55fps in random ass areas
  • 70fps average vsync off
  • 55-60fps in Novigrad
  • 60fps fighting bears

Hairworks off + Foliages and shadows on high
  • 60fps constant
  • No dips in random areas
  • 79-90+ fps vsync off
  • 58-60fps in Novigrad (Vsync on)
  • 60fps fighting anything (Vsync on)

Do I really need to sacrifice shadows/foliage to maintain 60fps on my damn 980? This game doesn't even look close to warranting so much horsepower at 1080p.

A couple things, have you disabled nvidia streamer service? ( at times it can cause major slowdown, I gaind 5-10 fps in gtaV disabling it http://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/344z7f/nvidia_usersraise_your_fps_and_save_cpu_usage_by/). There also seems to be some weird threading issues that cause some random drops, you may try setting your witcher3.exe to "high" priority ( ctrl-alt-del, processes, right click, priority). This helped my minimums. ( and if it works for you, I wrote a registry edit that will force it high all the time for ya I'm happy to send).

I have a 5820k and a 980 and very very rarely dip below 60. ( zooming on geralts head is about the only time, and thats just the crazy level of tesselation they have hairworks using).

Yeah, the game definitely needs some TLC still. Im just hoping they fix the LOD issues. Another thing thats helped some people is setting physx to the CPU instead of GPU in the nvidia control panel, and with you having a pretty high end CPU that may help

Really? Can I get a source on this? (Not that I don't believe you, jsut want to see exactly why this may fix it)

Ive only seen it in a few forums, and apparently it may be more for kepler cards, not maxwell. But its worth a shot being so quick a test. Supposedly physx is only running CPU already, but people with sli set ups have set 1 card to physx only, and still gotten 10-20% utilization ( when it really should be 0). I haven't looked at it super closely yet, but theres been several posts saying it helped others.

edit: in case you hadn't seen it yet. The last link has lots of various explanations of tweaks you might try too ( making sure frame limiter is off to reduce stutter, setting hairworks quality to improve performance at little loss of quality etc)

You must be a real perfectionist :D

Well I run it on max without hairworks and frames around 40~60 don't bother me at all. I also run Fantasy V2.0 mod which costs 5~10 fps.

Some people are definitely more sensitive to framerate than others. my wife is happy if its 25-30, I like to try and keep 60 because its easier on my eyes ( like not in an ironic pc master race way, if I play games at 30 for too long I get ocular headaches, 60 it isn't as bad) though Id rather have a stable 30 than framerate jumping all over etc. Just depends on preferences.

Im surprised the fantasy v2.0 hits that hard, I thought it was just a recolor/bloom. Guess I should look at it closer.

I have a 980 and the same CPU - everything looks great to me, no complaints. All settings cranked up to their maximums.
I've got about 90 hours played on a Dell U2410 monitor running at 1920x1200.

I think that if you didn't have something telling you your FPS numbers, you would be completely satisfied, as I am.

The fuck is this? Literally seconds outside of that area (it's a borderline abandoned village) I get 75+ fps and the second I step into that area I get the lowest dips i've ever had in the whole game? 40 fucking FPS?

Lol, what the hell is causing this, haha? With all that said however, I get 60fps (Vsync on) 99% of the time roaming the areas of Velen (with mild dips to 55fps in the odd area).

I might turn Shadows/Foliage to high to fix this (even in Reardon Manor I got 65+ fps and visually, I don't notice that much of a difference)

Any 980 friends mind telling me what settings they use for a solid 60fps? Anybody else mind testing this area out for them with similar settings? It's strange to say the least.

I'll go test the area when I get a chance in a few hours, but I didn't notice a major issue when I played through it ( though again, it was a previous build of the game). Is that an area with all the ice effects from the wild hunt? ( I don't think it is, but the village they burn and freeze has residual particle effects going crazy all the time that may effect the framerate)

And have you tried that area with mipmapbias set to 0? Maybe its just some unique textures causing issues with the bias.......also if I remember, there is a larger number of buildings you can actually go into in that area compared to others, maybe its loading all of their interiors....Do you get any spikes in VRAM usage? or does your card start working significantly harder?

Like I said, I'll play with it when I get a chance but that may not be for a few hours, so if someone else has the time now.....

@AverageGeek451 I turn off FPS counters for this reason, but really, variable fps and lower than 60 honestly affects some people pretty dramatically.
